To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIUS JEAN BAP- rrs'rn BARBAROU, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at No. 24 Rue St.-James, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cylinders for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of the cylinders of internal combustion engines, which is characterized by the combination, on one hand, of the cylinder barrel formed with its head end in one piece of a strong material easy to machine and capable of being made very light, and on the other hand of a valve box which may be cast; the two pieces being assembled together by screwing the valve box on the cylinder barrel. The tightness of thejoint is assured by jointing coatings or by beads of solder run around any places that might allow the passage of the cooling water into the cylinder, or of the passage of the gases into the cooling water jacket.
In the accompanying drawings that are given by way of example:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a cylinder according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan showing in its left-hand half the cylinder before the valve box is mounted thereon, and in its right hand half the cylinder after the said box has been mounted.
The cylinder barrel A is formed with its head end in one piece of steel whereby it is possible to make it of such dimensions as will give it a maximum strength with a minimum weight. Upon the cylinder barrel there is mounted a part B which may be made of soft cast iron, of aluminium or of gun metal, and which contains the passages for the admission and exhaust of the gases into and from the cylinder, as also the guides for the valves and the seats for the springs.
The valve box B is fixed to the cylinder barrel A by means of a screwthread C and a nut D.
In order to make a perfectly tight joint the contacting surfaces may be coated with a substance such as white lead or red lead. The several parts may also be soldered together at E, F and G, in order to make sure that the cooling water shall not be able to leak through the joints and penetrate thence into the cylinder. These two means of j ointing may be employed separately or together.
The cooling water jacket H may be attached to the valve box by autogenous soldering as shown. The bearing surface of the vale box upon the cylinder may of course be flat or conical.
The improved construction allows of producing very light cylinder barrels and of making the valve boxes of the form that is most suitable for effecting on one hand the exhaust of the gases and on the other hand the escape of the heat, especially around the valve guides.
When the valves are sufficiently numerous in engines where the cylinders are sufliciently large and where it is necessary to provide a plurality of valves for each cylinder for the admission and exhaust, the ad vantage of the improved construction will be still more evident.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cylinder for internal combustion engines comprising a steel barrel having a head and provided along the edge of the head with an integral annular flange interiorly screwthreaded and projecting beyond the head, an upstanding boss being provided at approximately the center of the cylinder head, a valve box of cast metal havin a central sleeve engaging said boss an a threaded peripheral part engaging the said threaded flange and a nut screwed on the boss and engaging with the said central sleeve.
2. A cylinder for internal combustion-engines comprising a steel barrel having a head and provided along the edge of the head with an integral flange annular interiorly screwthreaded and projecting beyond the head, an upstanding boss being provided at approximately the center of the cylinder head, a valve box of cast metal havin a central sleeve engaging said boss an 'a the head, an upstanding boss being provided at approximately the center of the cylinder head, a valve box of cast metal having a central sleeve engaging said boss and a threaded peripheral part engaging the said threaded flange and a nut screwed on the boss and engaging With the said central sleeve, the contacting parts being soldered to each other, around the said annular flange and the central boss onthe steel barrel head. 10
