To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Oscar. SoonRs'rRoM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of Bronx, and State of New York, and WARREN Funn- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVestfield, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Snap-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for forming the headed parts of the form of buttons known as resilient head and socket devices, and designed to produce the complete finished head 'from a strip of sheet metal, by successive die operations. 7
The object of the present invention is to provide means for forming a device in the nature of a flat base with a slender neck and enlarged head of spherical form, by the process of first forming a cylindrical extension on the blank with the upper closed end preferably rounded, and thereupon holding the lower portion of the neck from changing its shape while exerting a downward pressure on the upper end to cause expansion of the metal to form the head.
further object of the invention is to provide means for holding the lower portion or base of the blank during the formation of the head.
In the accompanying drawing showing one embodiment of our invention Figure l is a vertical section through the device with the plunger elevated. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the plunger in the lowered position. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 83 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a similar viewwith the plunger partly lowered and Fig. 5 is a similar view with the plunger in the lowermost position. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the bed showing certain parts in section; and Fig. 7 is a view enlarged of the arms for holding the neck of the blank.
As shown the device comprises a plunger 8 and a bed denoted generally by 9. At the left hand end of these members are dies for acting on the blank to form a cylindrical extension with a closed upper end. These may be of any desired construction, and as shown comprise aset of punches 10 that enter sockets in a die block 11 attached to the plunger. These are graded in thickness and length to produce an extension 12 1n five pair of arms 15 and l6that are laterally movedtoward the blank. These arms have slots lTand 18 in their opposite faces adapted to torm'a cylindrical here when brought together, substantially of the form of a blank extension 12; he arms at this portion are'caused to engage the extension 12 adjacent the base of the strip 13, with a considerable portion of the extension'projeciting above these arms. The slots in these arms are recessed at the upper portions as shown at 19; By this arrangement when the arms are brought together to engage the neck the recessed portion will form a'kind of cup shaped space at the upper part'o'f the arms.
A die'blockQO is carried by the plunger 8 and has a recess 21 in its lower face that when the plunger is brought down will strike" the extension 12 ofthe blank. Since the blank is supported at the lower portion of the neck, the part projecting above the arms will not be supported and will tend to expand. This recess is so shaped that it together withthe cup shaped recessed portion of the arms would form a kind of spherical cliethat will cause the upper end of the extension to assume a spherical head orlike formation, as indicated in Fig. 5.
These arms are automatically caused to approach andengage the blank by means of bars 22- and23 carried by the plunger, that engage cam faces 24 and 25 on the arms respectively. These bars will cause the'arms to approach and clamp the extension, and
I then the bars willpass below'the cam faces at the end of the arms and retain the arms engaging the extension. When the plungerrises and the bars free the'arms, springs 26 and 27 will serve to cause recession of the arms.
Means are further provided to support the extension at its base during the head forming operation. As shown we provide a plunger block 28 slidable in the bed and normally retracted by a spring 29. A slide 30 moves through a slot in the block and has a wedge face 31 engaging the inclined. upper face 32 of the slot, so that when the slide is advanced the block will be raised. The slide has a beveled end 33, that is engaged by the beveled end 34 of a bar 35, fast to the plunger 8. Therefore descent of plunger will advance the slide and elei'ate the block 28 that is provided with a curved lug 36 that is caused to enter the base of the extension on the lower face of the strip, and serves to support the extension when n1gaged by the arms and the descending plunger 20. lVhen the plunger is retracted a spring 37 will retract the slide 30, permitting withdrawal of the block 28 by its spring 29.
It will thus be seen that when the plunger descends the laterally movable arms are first brought to engage the extension 12 on the blank at the base thereof, and thereupon the block 28 is elevated to engage the base of the extension on the lower face. These parts are rigidly held in this position and the die block 20 is brought down to engage the upper end of the blank extension. This would tend to depress the extension, but being held at the bottom and at the sides of the base, the blank is forced to expand as it is moved downwardly and hence must assume the shape of a head, as shown in Fig. 5. It will be seen that the upper half of this head lies in the recess 21 of the die block, that is substantially hemi-spherical. The lower portion of the head is formed in the upper recessed portion of the slots of the arms.
The blank is thereupon advanced in the strip, to be later severed therefrom by cutting dies such as indicated at 38 and 39. If desired the blank can be perforated by dies 40 and 41. Also the blank could be embossed by suitable dies 4-3 and 4-1 before the final severing of the blank to form the completed button head.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is Z l. A sheet metal shaping apparatus comprising a bed, a plunger movable to and from the bed, a pair of laterally movable arms on the bed, said arms having their opposite ends arranged to engage and clamp the cylindrical neck of a blank, means for causing approach of said arms to clamp the neck on the initial downward movement of the plunger, a recessed die on the plunger arranged to engage the top of the blank at the latter portion of the descent of the plun ger after the clamping of the neck by said arms to cause the end of the neck to expand to form a spherical head, a block located below the cylindrical portion of the blank engaged by the arms, and means actuated on descent of the plunger to elevate said block to engage the base of the blank and support it on descent of the plunger and die.

A sheet metal shaping device compris ing a bed, a plunger movable to and from the bed, a pair of laterally movable arms on the bed, said arms having their opposite faces arranged to engage and clamp the cylindrical neck of a blank, springs arranged to separate said arms, bars on the plunger arranged to engage said arms to advance them to engage the blank and retain them in a :aging position on further descent of the plunger, a die on the plunger arranged to engage the top of the blank on descent of the plunger after said movement of the arms toiengage the blank, a block located in the bed arranged to engage the lower face of the cylindrical blank when advanced, a slide arranged to advance said .block, and an arm on the plunger arranged to engage said slide to raise the block to engage the blank on descent of the plunger, to hold the block in raised position. i

A sheet metal shaping device comprising a bed, a plunger movable to and from the bed, laterally movable arms on the bed arranged to be brought together to the neck of a blank, a die on the plunger arranged to engage the top of the blank, means for actuating the plunger and said arms to cause descent of the plunger after approach of said arms, a supporting member for the blank, and means controlled by said actuating means to elevate said support on descent of the plunger to hold the support elevated on engagement of the said plunger die with the blank.

A sheet metal shaping device comprising a bed, a plunger movable to and from the bed, arms movable to engage the neck of a cylindrical blank, a die carried bythe plunger, actuating means for the plunger and arms to cause descent of the plunger after the arms engage the blank, a support having a movable portion arranged to engage the cylindrical portion of the blank at the base, said support having its lower face inclined, a slide having an inclined face and laterally movable to engage and raise the support, a spring for retracting the slide, and an arm on the plunger having an inclined face arranged to engage and advance said slide on descent of the plunger whereby to raise said support.
