Description

W L. SETTLE SPUDDING SHOE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 23 19.19,.
Patented May 18, 1920.
WILLIAM L. snr'rLn, or m'nmrms, TENNESSEE, lassrenon T0 JAY To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. SETTLE,
a citizen of'the United States of America,
residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby. and Stateof Tennessee, have 1n-. vented certain new and useful Improvements in Spudding-Shoes, of which thefoL lowing is a specification.
I The primary object of the invehtion'is the provision of a spudding shoe adapted for ready positioning upon and removal from a 1 cable by merely changing the positions of the shoe without the necessity of adjusting any parts thereof, the shoe moreover being operatively held against accidental displacement when the device is positioned for use. V q i Y A further object of the invention 1s to provide a spudding shoe possessing great strength and inexpensive to manufacture,
the construction bein such that the. shoe may be instantly positioned for use upon the well cable and reinovedktherefrom at will by "merely twisting the shoe itself, the device also furnishing renewable contact faces for the cable insuring long life and ease of operation. a
A still further object of the invention is to provide a 'spuddingshoe calculated to exert only the minimum amount of wear upon the cable with which the shoe is used and adapted for ready installation with any rope and cable equipment for well drilling several views, and
, ing the-invention installed for-operation, 1
apparatus, the shoe being adaptable for different sized cables of the drill rig.
With these general objects in view and others that will hereinafter appear, the invention will be now fully'described'.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, like reference characters desig-' nate corresponding parts throughout the Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrat- Fig. 2 is aside elevation. of the shoe partly broken awa i-llustrating'the well cable in section wit the shoe indicated by I so scale, and 4 I cable broken away.

Applio'ation fi l ed December 23, 1919. Serial No. 347,008.
I my shoein the main is substantially triangular in form comprising a body 10 having a spool or roller 11 journaled by means-of a n1 connmr, or
removable pin 12 at oneend of the body 10 and being referred to as the rear end of the shoe at the apex of the triangularformation. The jerk line or rope 13 of the well 1 drilling rigging is attached by means of a loop 14 to the roller 11 in any well known manner whereby movement is imparted to the shoe during the drilling operation.
' The forward end or base of the triangular body10 is arcuate and divided into two similar oppositely positioned sections 15 and 16 with a transverse slot 17 dividing the base portion of the body 10 into sections 18 and 19. r
The said sections 18 and 19 are substantially L-shaped'in form providing arcuate entrance slots .20 and 21 at opposite sides of the shoe for the sections 18 and 19 respectively, whereby the shoe may be positioned with the body 10 upon the drilling cable 22 by placing the slot 17 over the cable 22 with the shoe substantially horizontal andthen turning theshoe with the slots 20 and 21 substantially vertical so that thexcable '22 passes through said slots during the turn ing movement of the shoe. A pull upon the roller end of the shoe then seats the cable 22 upon the removable slip or bearing faces 23 provided within the sections 18 and 19.
The slip faces 23 are arcuate for fitting over the base portions 15 and 16 within the sections 18 and 19 respectively while screws operative positions.
v24 removably secure the slip faces in their The inner bearing sides 25 of the slip faces 23 are preferably K grooved for receiving the cable 22 and it will be understood that said slip faces are formed of any suitable material such as invention, it will be apparent that theshoe may be instantly positioned upon the cable 22'with the sections 18 and 19 hooked overthe cable which is seated Within the L-shaped sections upon the removable bearing faces 23 hereinafter noted. The operation of the line 13 as well as the shoe are-also apparent,
the 'pin 12 being removable when desired to disengage the roller 11 from the jerk line 1'oop 14. A strong and serviceable spudding shoe is provided combining the advantages of the renewable bearing faces with the ease of placing .thershoe in position upon the steel. From this detailed description of the drilling cable as well as removing the same therefrom.
\Vhile the form of the invention herein set forth is believed preferable, it will nevertheless be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention hereinafter claimed.
hat is claimed as new is:
1. A spudding shoe having a cable bearing surface and further having an entrance opening for av well drilling cable intersecting the bearing surface.
2. A spudding shoe having a cable bearing surface and further having an entrance opening for a. Well drilling cable arranged at right angles to the cable bearing surface.
3. A spudding shoe having a divided bearing surface with an angle slot formed in each side of the shoe.
at. A spudding shoe having a divided bearing surface with an angle slot formed in each side of the shoe, the inner ends of the slots being alined to provide a cable entrance opening to the shoe.
5. A spudding shoe having a cable bearing surface and further having an entrance opening for a well drilling cable at the outer side of said shoe.
6. A spudding shoe having a cable bearing surface and further having an entrance opening for a well drilling cable extending at an angle to said bearing surface.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
