HOOK AND EYE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented -May 18, 1920.
Application filed February 1, 1919, Serial No. 274,505. Renewed October 4, 1919. Serial No. 328,587.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (Mrs) ELLA NEILSON GAILLARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have i11- vented new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hooks and eyes of the type particularly adapted to be used in connection with wearing apparel and has for its primary object the provision of means whereby the adjacent or adjoining edges of a garment may be easily joined and securely retained in an adjoined relation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hook and eye of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, reliable in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, forming a part of this specification wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hook and eye embodying my invention, the same being shown as connected with the adjacent edges of portions of a garment with which it is particularly adapted to be used,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a female member,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a male member, and,
Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred form of my invention, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate portions of a garment with which the device embodying my invention is particularly adapted to be used. \Vhile I have shown one complete unit as applied to the above mentioned portions of a garment. it is to be understood that the construction of the several units which may be employed in cases where a single unit will not suffice are to be substantially identical with the structure hereinafter described.
By the term unit as employed above I mean the combination of a female member 7 with a male member 8, the female and male members being shown as connected respectively with the portions 5 and 6 in Fig. 1. The female member 7 comprises an elongated bar 9 having arms 10 secured at the ends thereof. The arms 10 are provided with eyelets 11 through which the threads 12 are passed to secure the member as a whole upon theportion 5 of the garment as shown in Fig. 1. Intermediate the ends of the bar 9 there is provided a loop 18, which loop is preferably formed integral with the bar 9 as clearly shown. The male member indicated as a whole by the numeral'8 comprises a bar 9 having arms 10 which are provided with eyelets 11 through which threads 12 are passed in order to secure the member 8 as a whole upon the portion 6 of the garment as clearly shown in Fig. 1. To the bar 9 intermediate its ends there is secured a tongue 14; which is bent rearwardly upon itself as shown at 15. The rearwardly bent portion 15 is then bent substantially upon itself to provide a second tongue 16 which is spaced from the rearwardly bent portion 15 as clearly shown.
In use, the loop 13 is hooked over the tongue 14: whereupon it is confined between the tongue 16 and the rearwardly bent portion 15 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In considering the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 5 it will be understood that the construction of the same is substantially that of the hereinbefore described members 7 and 8 but instead of employing the form of tongue 16 of Fig. 4 I desire to slightly modify this by forming at the jointure of the tongue 16 and the rearwardly bent portion 15 a depression 17, which depression is adapted to receive the loop 13, which loop is, instead of being formed flat as shown in Fig. 3, slightly bent at 18 and 1 9.
The operation of the device shown in Fig. 5 is substantially identical with the device hereinbefore described but by bending the tongue 16 to provide the depression 17 and y bending the loop 13 as shown at 18 and 19 the tongue 14 together with the rearwardly bent portion 15 is moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 5 when the adjacent edges of the portions 5 and 6 of the garment tend to separate as is readily apparent from the drawings.
It is to be understood that the forms of ing an elongated bar adapted to be secured my invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A hook and eye comprising male and female members, the female member being provided with a loop, the male member being provided with a tongue bent rearwardly upon itself, said tongue and rearwardly bent portion being adapted to enter said loop,
and a second tongue carried by the rear-' wardly bent portion and spaced therefrom. 2. A hook and eye comprising female and male members, the female member compristo a garment, a loop formed integral with said bar, the male member comprising an elongated bar adapted to be secured to a garment, a tongue formed integral with the bar of the male member, said tongue being bent rearwardly upon itself, said tongue and rearwardly bent portion being adapted to enter said loop, a second tongue secured to the rearwardly bent portionand spaced therefrom, the second named tongue being adapted to engage the surface of the garment.
3. A hook and eye comprising a female member having a loop, a male member com prising an elongated bar, a tongue formed integral with said bar and bent rearwardly upon itself, a second tongue carried by the rearwardly bent portion, the second named tongue being provided with a depression at p the jointure of the rearwardly bent portion i and the second named tongue, said loop being adapted to be confined within said depression.
ELLA NEILSON GAILLARD.
