Z 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM VALLACE Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scales, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of scales which are more particularly designed for weighing auto trucks, railway cars and similar heavy objects.
It is the object of the invention to provide an improved connection between each pair of side levers which are generally known as main levers and one of the intermediate levers which are generally known as end and center levers, said intermediate levers being usually arranged lengthwise in the scale and the main levers transversely on opposite sides of the intermediate levers and at opposite ends of the scale.

Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical trans verse section of a scale showing my improvement applied to one of the intermediate or end levers and a pair of side or main levers. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the bearing blocks 1nterposed between one of the side levers and one side of the intermediate lever. Figs. 1 and 5 are fragmentary perspective views of a pair of side or main levers. Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the end or intermediate levers. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the bearing blocks.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 represents one of the intermediate or end levers of the scale which may be of any suitable construction and pivotally mounted in the usual and well known way so that the same is capable of swinging vertically. On its opposite sides this intermediate lever is provided with two upwardly-facing knife- edge bearings 2, 2, which are arranged horizontally and parallel with or perpendicular to the axis of this lever andat right angles to the length of the same. These knife-edge bearings are preferably formed on opposite ends of a bar or insert 3" of hardened material such as steel which is square in cross section Specification of Letters Patent.

and arranged in an opening in this lever and supported by means of laterally-projecting lugs 42 formed on opposite sides of the intermediate lever and engaging with the under side of this knife-edge bar, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6.
5, 5, represent two side or main levers of the scale which are arranged transversely on opposite sides of the intermediate lever and pivotally mounted in any suitable and well known manner so as to swing verti cally. The inner ends of these side levers are arranged over the knife-edge bearings of the intermediate lever and each of these side levers is provided on its under side with a knifeedge bearing 6 which is arranged horizontally and parallel to the axis of the same and at right angles to the knife-edge bearing of the intermediate lever immediately below the same. The knifeedge of each side lever is preferably formed on the lower downwardly facing side of an insert 7 of hardened material, such as steel, which is seated in a correspondinglyshaped groove 8 formed on the under side of the respective side lever.
Between the downwardly-facing knifeedge of each side lever and the upwardlyfacing knife-edge on one side of the intermediate lever is arranged a bearing block whereby the pressure of this side lever is transmitted by compression to the intermediate lever. The body 9 of this bearing block is generally of cross shaped form, as best shown in Fig. 3, and is provided on the under side of one of the bars or arms forming this cross with a downwardlyfacing flat bearing face 10 which engages with the knife-edge on one side of the intermediate lever and onits upper side the other bar of this cross shaped body is provided with an upwardly-facing flat hearing face 11 which is arranged at right angles to the lower flat bearing face and engages with the knife-edge bearing of one of the side levers. These bearing faces of the block are preferably formed on inserts or wearing pieces 12, 13 of hardened material, such as steel, which inserts are of elongated form and rectangular in cross section and inserted in correspondinglyshaped grooves 14, 15 formed in the upper and lower sides of the body of the bearing block and at right angles to each other. The bottom and top surfaces 16, 17 of the body of this bearing block are preferably flush with the upper and lower bearing surfaces of the inserts. Each of the hearing pieces or inserts of the bearing block is preferably pointed or tapered at its opposite ends, as shown at 18, and the adjacent surfaces of the bearing block forming the ends of the cross bars which constitute this body are beveled, as shown at 19, to conform to the tapering shape of the bearing pieces. In its preferred form, each bearing piece has its maximum length on one side in line with its bearing surface while the remaining sides thereof are "beveled and merge into the correspondingly beveled or inclined surfaces of the arms or bars forming the body of the bearing block, so that as a whole each pair of arms of the bearing block recede from their extremities on one side of the block toward the other side of the block in which the other bearing piece is arranged.
By thus pointing the four terminals or ends of each bearing block, any one of these points when arranged adjacent to the surface of the intermediate lever will serve as an anti-friction point and operate to reduce to a minimum the frictional contact between the bearing block and the intermediate lever and thereby permit of obtaining the maximum sensitiveness in the operation of the scale. By thus making the bearing block symmetrical as to all four ends of its bearing pieces, it is immaterial which particular end of a bearing piece faces the intermediate lever inasmuch as any one of them will operate as an anti-friction, thereby avoiding the necessity of exercising any particular care when assembling the scale so far as presenting any iarticular end of a bearing block to the intermediate lever is concerned.
In the operation of the scale, the downward pressure of the end or side levers is transmitted from the knife-edges thereof to the knife-edges of the intermediate lever by means of the bearing blocks which are interposed between the same andv during the rocking movement of these levers, the side levers turn on the bearing blocks and the latter turn on the intermediate lever, these two turning movements being at right angles to each other, so that these bearing blocks serve as universal connections between the side levers and the intermediate lever, whereby motion is transmitted from the former to the latter with a minimum of friction.
This construction of the bearing blocks and the manner of engaging the same with the cooperating parts of the side and intermediate levers, effects a reduction in the number of parts which have been usually employed heretofore for this purpose. It also avoids expensive forging operations,
simplifies the construction and effects greater economy in cost of production. l urthermore, the pressure of the main or side levers is by this means transmitted to the intermediate or end lever by compression instead of by tension, whereby the strength of the scale is increased. hfloreover, this form of connection between the main or side levers and the intermediate or end lever permits of lining up the scale much easier than has been possible heretofore, because all the bearing surfaces of the blocks can be ground accurately to one size. Another advantage in this construction is that all the knife-edges are always freely accessible for inspection, adjustment and repairs, so that it is possible to keep a scale in perfect operation with a miuinn'un expenditure of time and care.
I claim as my invention 1. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly-facing bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of the intermediate lever at right angles thereto and each provided with a down wardly-facing bearing, and a bearing block interposed between the bearing of one side lever and one of the bearings of the intermediate lever and provided with an anti-friction point facing said intermediate lever.
2. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with iipwardly-facinng bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of the intermediate lever at right angles thereto and each provided with a downwardly-facing bearing, and a bearing block inte1 '1 )osed between the bearing of one side lever and one of the bearings of the intermediate lever and provided on four sides with anti-friction points one of which faces the intermediate lever.
3. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lever and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge bearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each. side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever, said bearing blocks being provided on their upper and lower sides with'hardened inserts engaging with the respective knife edges of the side and intermediate levers.
4. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lever and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge bearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever, each of said bearing blocks being provided on its upper and lower sides with grooves arranged at right angles to each other, and hardened inserts arranged in said grooves which engage with the respective knife edges of one of the side levers and the in termediate lever.
5. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lever and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge bearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever, each of said bearing blocks being provided on its upper and lower sides with grooves which are arranged at right angles relatively to each other and are rectangular in cross section, and correspondingly-sharped hardened inserts arranged in said grooves and provided with flat bearing faces engaging the respective knife edge of one of the side levers and one of the knife edges of said intermediate lever.
6. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lever and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge bearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever, said bearing blocks being provided on their upper and lower sides with hardened inserts engaging with the respective knife edges of the side and intermediate levers and each insert having pointed ends forming antifrictions.
7. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bear ings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lever and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge bearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever, said bearing blocks being provided on their upper and lower sides with hardened inserts engaging with the respective knife edges of the side and intermediate levers and each insert and the adjacent parts of the bearing block being pointed.
S. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bear ings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lover and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge hearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever, each of said bearing blocks being of cross-shaped form and engaging on one side with one of a pair of opposing knife edges and on its opposite side with the other one of said pair of knife edges.
9. In a scale, the combination of an intermediate lever provided on its opposite sides with upwardly facing knife edge bearings, two side levers arranged on opposite sides of said intermediate lever and each provided with a downwardly facing knife edge bearing which is arranged above one of the knife edge bearings of the intermediate lever and at right angles thereto, and a bearing block arranged between the knife edge of each side lever and one of the knife edges of the intermediate lever each of said hearing blocks being of cross-shaped form and provided on its opposite sides with grooves which are arranged at right angles to each other and which are rectangular in cross section, and hardened inserts of corresponding cross section arranged in said grooves and each having a flat bearing face engaging one of said lever knife edges, and each insert and the adjacent part of the block being of tapering form.
