CHARLES J. NASH, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 UNIVERSAL DRAFT GEAR ATTACHMENT C0., 'A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRAFT-ARI@ FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
To all whom it may concer-1i..-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. Nnsn, u
citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook. and Stute of llli nois, have invented certain nenY and useful. Improvements in Draft-Arms for vRailway-Cars, of which the following is n specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to improvements in draft arms for railway ears whereby the use of aslmrt ke)r for connecting the draw bar and its extension is facilitated, the assembling and disassembling of these parts Without r uiringz the`rernoval of the draft gear from t 1e ear is permittedand n smooth hearing surf-.1re for the end of the key is provided. l
The invention consists broadl y in a draft :ucm having. an aperture for the insertion of the key, and a filler lilo'rk secured Within the aperture; and more specifically to detailed construction as hereinafter descrihed.
In the drawin x Figure 1 is a. tiiil plan iiew of the'bot-Vy tom of a cnr and of the draftgear. some parts being shown in plan section: Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section of the structure shown in Fig. l. th(` view being taken outside of the center sills.;
Fig. 'i is a view in perspective of the filler block for the draft 4plate aperture. and
Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional details taken on the line 4&4 and .55 respectively of Fi .'1. l
rhe terni draft arm as herein used is intended to have a. euliicientlr hroad application to include any'form of elementfixed to the can' and to which draft and huling stresses are .:ommunirated through the draft gear. Such elements are given various names in the trade according to their particular form, such as draft arm. draft sill.V draft plate and cheek plate. These varia tions of form have, however` no bearing upon the present invention which is appli cable to any of them. Furthermore. these draft elements,`\vhile always provided with some form of shoulder for engagement b v an element of the draft lgear. ma)r hav Such shoulder cust integral with its body portion or take the form of n lug secured to the body :is lu' nii-uns ot' rivets. Again.` it is immaterial so far as relates to this inven- Specication of Letters Patent.

tion, except in its more spur-lilo forni. whirh type of sdcalled d mit lugr employed.
ln the drawings; there is shown at ll) nu end sill of a can? :1nd :it ll its hulling hlor-k'. A. draw har of any desired form is shown at 12, the drmv bar extension or yoke at 1 3 und a short kev for unitingr these two menihere at 14. -liy :i short key is meant one which is oi' a length less than the distintive between the tufo draft arms. :is ditirr ruished from a common type oi' hej. nhieh 1s of such lenfth that it extends through slots in the dra t arms. A dra ft arm is repH resented :it l5 and as shown the fr rwnrll draft lug 16 is a separate element secured to the inner face of the draft arm hy meansvr of rivets, its body portion extending:- for wardly to the end of the arm. An aperture is formed in the arm through which the hwy 14 may he inserted and in the etructurev as shown. thisl aperture is through not only the body of the arm hut also the body portion of the draft lug 1 6. This aperture is filled, 4after the key has been inserted.` h5' means o f a hlook, as 1i'. the inner face of which is flush with the inner face of therdraft arm and thus provides a smooth and continuous surface over which the end of the keV may travel as the draw har moves longitudinally in the exigent-ies of servire. The hlock 1i may he secured in place hy any suitable means. As shown. this is aeroml'ilished by providing the draft arm with a pair of outstanding apertnred lugs 18. 1Q, and the .block with a Vpnir of end fianges 20.21, each heingnpertured. ae Shown, to fit upon the lugs 18, 19. A pin. preferably oi' the Cotter type. as 22. hein;r set into the apertures in the lugs 18. 19` the, block 17- is serurely held in place.
Vi'here. as in the ronstruction shown, the draft lunr 1.6 is an attached element, the lugs 1H; 1i). may he ronyeniently formed u the aperture in the body of the dra `arm lliheing suiliriently long to accommodate them und these lugs beingr spaced apart a.

li u
.distance slightly greater than the Width of the key to permit its insertion between' or the inner face of an attached draft lug) the key l4'will slide freely upon it and from it to the surface ofthe arm. The invention is un advantage in connection with any type oi' cer und draft gear construction where the short form of key is used, but 1s of still greater utility where certain t pes of draft ,geur are used which permit e ong run re of 'movement of the drew ber.
1e object infvview in havinr the inner face of the filler block flush wit the inner faire of the druft arm is to uvoid the presence of shoulders upon which the key may catch as the drew bar moves longitudinally. This ohjet'is secured by :i construction in which such shoulders nre avoided even though the inner feces of the block und urm moy not be strictly in the seme pinne. As shown, the ends of the key are rounded und it is obvious that such n key will more freely over'a surface which is not entirely smooth.
I claim as my invention:
1. A` draft arm for railway cnrs having an opening for the insertion of n coupler securing key, und n liller block secured in the aperture und hnvin r its inner faire iiush with the inner face of t 1e erm.
2. A drnft erm for railway curs having en opening for the insertion of :i coupler securing key, u draft lug secured to the innel' fece of the nrin und having un opening ulined with that of the arm, and :l fiilerA block secured in such onenings und having its inner fece flush wit thej-'ixiner face of the lug. j
3. `In combination, :i drui't nrrn having nn openinr. for the insertion oi u. drnft geur key, e raft lug secured to the arm und having n body portion extending beyond the opening und having u key admitting aperture nlined with such openingr und :i parir of lugs projectingr therethrongli n filler block for such aperture und hnving r apertures for receiving` the lugs, und means associated with the lugs for securing the block.
