.AIR-PROPELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed November 15, 1918. Serial No. 262,745.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VENDEL L. Biinnrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Propellers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to air motors, and more especially to fans; and the object of the same is to produce a manually operable propeller to be held in one hand and driven by the other. It is an especially good thing in school buildings, keeping all kinds of disease away. It is well known that to many injured persons and especially soldiers, the act of waiving a fan is painful. Moreover, each movement of the fan drives air toward the face and not away from it, and when in the trenches, it is often desirable to drive gas away from the face as well as to drive cool air toward it. Finally, it is desirable to pro vide the wounded soldier with a substitute for a fan which is of itself ingenious, so as to divert his attention from his suffering. All these objects are accomplished by my invention which is more fully described and claimed below and shown in the drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention with the casing in section.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1.
The casing is composed of a flat block having an aperture A and upright ends whereof the front end has an opening constituting a bearing B and the other end a socket constituting a thrust bearing T, and a curved metal hood H; and a handle 0 depends obliquely from the casing. A shaft S is journaled through the bearing B and disposed at its rear end within the thrust bearing T, and on the front end of the shaft is propeller P. A spool W is fast on the shaft within the housing or casing beneath the hood H, and a cord C, attached to the wheel passes downward through the aperture A and carries a ring R at its lower end. The parts are appropriately colored and made of any desired material and size, and the operation is as explained below.
Taking the handle 0 in the left hand, the user directs the propeller P toward his face and puts one of his fingers of right hand through the ring R. Now he draws down on the ring and the cord C which causes the spool W to rotate in one direction, of course carrying the propeller with it. Momentum continues the rotation so that the cord C is wound on the wheel W in the opposite direction, provided the operator loosens or lets up on the ring at the lower extreme of its movement. Again he pulls down on the ring and the propeller revolves in the opposite direction. Thus the propeller is operated and when turning in one direction delivering a blast of fresh air onto the face and when turning in the other direction carrying the air or gas away from the face.
This air propeller is ingenious and simple in its structure, and can be manufactured and sold at a minimum cost, or given away as an advertising medium and is entirely reliable in its action. Children could use it as a toy and it might be employed with con siderable amusement. It is possible that the blades of the propeller could be set in such a direction and the rotation thereof so rapid that it would produce a noise. These and other possibilities are within the scope of my invention.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be consid ered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a device of the class described, of a housing provided with a flat bottom and upright ends, a curved hood covering the top, said bottom provided with an aperture, the front end provided with bearing and the rear end provided with a socket bearing, a handle depending obliquely from said housing, a shaft journaled in said bearings and having a propeller blade at its front end, a pulley positioned upon said shaft within said housing, a cord attached to said pulley and extending through the bottom of said housing and carrying a ring at its lower end.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
