MOUTH ORGAN.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICEO EMIL LAMPRECHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOUTH-ORGAN.
Application filed. March 14, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL LAMPREOHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouth-Organs, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide improved means for securing reeds in mouth organs so that the reeds will not get loose and so that they will produce better tones than has heretofore been produced in mouth organs.
Another object of my invention is to use reeds which will not require grinding or milling and which can be quickly, firmly and easily attached to reed plates without the requirement of rivets.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an enlarged view of a portion of a mouth organ reed plate having reeds secured thereto in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of my improved reeds.
Referring to the drawings, 4 represents a reed plate which has a number of slots 5 cut therein over which the reeds 6 are mounted. The reeds 6 are made of flat strips of metal of even thickness and have hooks or flanges 7 formed at one end thereof. These reeds can be made from flat strips of metal of equal thickness and the flanges or hooks 7 can be bent so as to extend at an angle to the surfaces 8 of the reeds. The reeds 6 are of greater length than the respective slots 5 so that a portion of the reeds adjacent the hooks 7 rest upon the top surface 9 of the reed plate 4, and the remaining portions of the reeds are adapted to vibrate within the slots 5. The reed plate 4 has lip portions bent or struck up therefrom in alinement with the respective slots 5. These lip portions 10 are bent in the form of arches 1O around the respective hooks 7 of the reeds 6 and so that the end surfaces 11 of the lip portions engage the surfaces 8 of the reeds directly adjacent the hooks 7. These arches 10 are pressed Specification of Letters Patent.

downwardly so that the end surfaces 11 press against the surfaces 8 of the reeds and firmly hold them against the upper surface 9 of the reed plate 4 and so that the surfaces 12 of the arches are in alinement with the end surfaces 13 of the slots 5. In this manner the hooks 7 are clamped within the arches 10 and the portions of the reeds adj acent the hooks are firmly held between the end surfaces 11 of the arches and the upper surface 9 of the reed plate. At the same time the surfaces 12 of the arches 10 are directly in line with the-end surfaces 13 of the slots 5 and the portions of the reeds not held by the arches 10 are free to vibrate within the slots 5.
By making the reeds 6 of uniform thickness and uniform width they can be cut from continuous strips of metal and require no milling or grinding to secure the proper tone since the tone of the different reeds can be changed by varying their lengths. At the same time, I can securely connect the reeds to the reed plate by the construction above described and they will not become loose. Thus I am enabled to quickly and easily make a mouth organ in which the reeds will be securely held to the reed plate and the reeds can be quickly made by cutting them from lengths of metal which is of equal thickness and uniform width.
l/Vhile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a reed plate having a slot therein; and a reed positioned over said slot and having a portion in engagernent with said. reed plate, said reed plate having a lip struck therefrom and bent in the form of an arch around the end of said portion of the reed which is in engage ment with said reed plate, the end surface of said lip being pressed against the surface of said reed which is oppositely disposed to the surface of said reed that is in engagement with the reed plate; substantially as described.
2. The combination of a reed plate hav ing a slot therein; and a reed positioned over Said slot and having a portion in engagement with said reed plate, said portion of the reed having a hook thereon, said reed plate having a lip struck therefrom and bent in the form of an arch around said hook; substantially as described.
3. The combination of a reed plate having a slot therein; and a reed positioned over said slot and having a portion in engagement with said reed plate, said portion of the reed having a hook thereon, said reed plate having a lip struck therefrom and bent in the form of an arch around said hook, said lip having its end surface pressing against the surface of said reed portion which is oppositely disposed to the surface of said reed portion that in engagement with the reed plate; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
