ISAAC N. CRESS, OF WAKEENEY, KANSAS.
- TBUSS.
Application filed July 17, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC N. Cnnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wakeeney, in the county of Trego and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surgery, and more especially to trusses; and the objects of the same are to improve the construction of the pad, as well as the construction of the harness.
To this end the pad is composed of a. block having a dished face substantially rectangular in contour, and spring fingers extend radially from said block and are deflected a little outward from its plane so that tension on the harness when the harness engages said fingers results in bearing the block inward toward the body. Also at one end of the belt is a peculiar form of loop engaging a headed stud in the back of the block, for causing this end of the belt to ress the block normally toward the body.
he structure includes other details as hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a general perspective view of this truss, showing portions of its harness.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the pad block viewed from the inside.
The numeral 1 designates a block substantially rectangular in contour and having a flange 2 rising from its inner face which is that side next the body. The flange is shown in Fig. 3 as extending around three edges of this face whereby the latter is cupped as indicated at 3, and the pad proper 43 overlies this cupped face with or without intervening packing, as the conditions of each case may demand. If the pad is moistened by medicament or otherwise, the cupping of the face of the block will assist in retaining the moisture. To the back of the block is secured a plate 5 carrying headed studs 6 and 7, and from the block project two spring tongues, one to the left as shown at 8 in Fig. 3 and the other downward as shown at 9, these tongues being deflected out of the plane of the block for a purpose which will appear. The tongues may be clamped between the plate and the block, or might be stamped integral with the plate and therefore project beyond its periphery.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 311,551.
The numeral 10 designates the belt for encircling the waist of the wearer. At one end thisbelt has attached to it a leather tab 11 containing a pouch or pocket 18 which is to receive the tongue 8, the tab projecting beyond this end of the belt and having a buttonhole or opening 16 to receive the studded head 6. The other end of the belt is shown as having a strap 12 adjustablyconnected with it as by a buckle 13, and this strap (which might be of elastic material if desired) carries at its extremity a loop 17 of stout wire whose outer end is intended to engage the headed studs 7. As seen in Fig. 2, this loop does not stand in one plane, but it is provided with an elbow between its inner end which engages the strap and its outer end which engages the stud, and said elbow 19 contacts with the plate 5 when the belt is drawn tight.
The crotch strap is indicated at 20, and as usual it extends from the front side of the belt where it is attached in a manner not necessary to illustrate, between the legs of the wearer and to a point where the truss pad occurs, as here shown. At this point it is provided with a tab 21 having a pocket 29 to receive the tongue 9. and the crotch strap extends a little beyond the mouth 28 of the pocket and carries a loop 27 of wire adapted for engagement with the headed stud 7.
The truss is taken off by disengaging the loops 27 and 17 from the stud 7, and the buttonhole 16 need not be ordinarily disengaged from the stud 6. The truss is applied by placing the block in proper position, carrying the belt around the body, drawing the strap 12 tight, and engaging the loop 17 with the stud. at which time the tension of the belt should bear the elbow 19 against the plate 5 which will press the block 1 and the pad 4 inward toward the part affected, after which the crotch strap is passed through the legs. its pocket 29 slipped up onto the tongue 9, and its loop 27 engaged. with the stud 7. Deflection of both tongues 8 and 9 out of the plane of the block 1 and, in effect. away from the body of the wearer, causes these tongues when the respective straps are drawn tight to bear the block inward as will be clear. and yet the straps next adjacent the block do not touch the body. This detail Iflnd to be a matter of great comfort, because it is well known that in many cases of rupture the flesh adjacent the affected part is tender and in some instances extremely so. Although not so shown, the crotch strap will have means for adjusting it to fit the wearer, as will the belt.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 I claim as new is 1. In a truss, the combination with a padcarrying block,.and a spring finger projectiity lot the belt with the-iblock.
I '2: Ina truss, the combination with a pad carrying block, and aspring finger-projecting.radiallytherefrom and deflected out of g .the planerof the block away from the body or theoweareryof abelt attached at one extrernity'. to the back r the block :and having a pocket receiving said 'fingers, a-headed stud on the block, and a loop detachably engaging said stud and connected with the other extremity of the belt and having an a elbow between its ends borne inward to contact with the block by tension on the belt.
3. In a truss, the combination with a block having means on its face for supporting thepad, two headed studs on its back,
and spring fingers projecting radially from 5 the block, one horizontally and one downward; of a belt having a tab-at one end with a buttonhole detachablyengaging on one stud, the tab having a pocket receiving the h orizonta'l finger, means for detachably connectlng ltS' other end with the other stud,
and a crotch strap having a pocket to engage the downward finger and a loop to detachably engage the last-named stud.
