To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that we, ROZA I. ODELL and CLARA S. HOWELL, citizens of the United States of America, residing in Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have jointly invented a new and useful Napkin Belt or Retainer and Shield, of which the following is a specification.

Ourinvention has relation to improvements in napkin belts and shields; and the object is to provide an improved belt for the purpose named which will retain and support a napkin and to which a shield for the napkin may be adjustably and detachably connected, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.

lVe have fully and clearly illustrated our invention Vin the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved device. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the lineacw of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa detail of one of the loops or frames to which the napkin is secured when worn. Fig. 4 is a view of the shield, and Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the yokepieces.

A designates the belt, composed of a back and front piece l 2, which are counterparts in shape and formed with downward extensions 3 at their middle portions, to which the metal frames et are secu red,substantially as seen in the drawings in Fig. 5. The ends of the napkin are secured to these metal frames by passing the ends through the frames and securing them by safety-pins- The ends of the yokes are connected at one side by an elastic 5, and at the other side are connected by similar elastic G, having a button or buckle at one end to adjust the belt to the wearer, or a snap-hook may be used for this connection.

To the middle of each yoke-piece arranged to lie on the outside of the frames 4, is secured a tab 7 to take with buckles 8, having elastic connection to the respective ends of the napkin-shield B, substantially as shown in the drawings. This napkin-shield consists of a piece of textile material rendered impervious to moisture-such as oil-silk,water-proof material, or thin india-rubber-lined or faced with some suitable material, and is of the shape to cover the outer surface of the napkin when in position. It will be perceived that the napkin and the shield are given independent connections to the belt, and that either may be removed or detached, as desired, and that all long strap connections are dispensed with, so that convenience, cleanliness, and comfort are attained.

The elastic connections of the yokes of the belt give an easy, comfortable, and yielding function to the napkin, and the elastic and adjustable connections of the shield to the belt make the shield readily conform to the contour of the napkin and not at all uncomfortable when in place over the napkin.

The use of our improved device is readily perceived by reference to the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings; but it may here be stated the belt is adjusted tothe person and fastened. Then the napkin is arranged and secured in position, and then the shield is drawn over the napkin and buckled to the belt.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A napkin-holder consisting o f the belt A, composed of back and front yokes joined by elastic connections at the sides and having downward extensions in the middle of each yoke, an angular metal frame 4, secured in each of said extensions to hold the ends of the napkin, tabs 7, secured on the back and front of the belt over the metal frames, and a napkinshield B, provided with elastic straps at the ends and buckles in the elastics to buckle on the tabs 7 of the belt, substantially as described.
