Be it known that I, HANS M. Bon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county ofHennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grease-Guns, of which the following is a specification..
My invention relates to a container for grease in a paste or semi-fluid form, having a pipe and flexible hose by means of which the grease may be accurately and quickly applied by air under pressure to the point of use;
. A further object is to provide a container which will accurately measure the amount of grease dispensed and a container which can be easily and quickly recharged.
A further object is to provide a container of light and simple construction that is conveniently portable and may be used for greasing differentials and transmissions of automobiles and for other purposes.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The container is preferably cylindrical in form, and for the most part is of well known construction. The air is forced in through a suitable valve 29 into the container 5, pressure being indicated by the gage 30. The contents of the contalner are forced out through openings 7 ,pipe 8 and' iexible hose 10 as the container piston is acted upon by the air pressure when the shut ofl' valve 9 is opened. My arrangement of the shut off valve 9 relieves the exible hose 1() from pressure and eliminates the disagreeable consequences which might follow in case the hose becomes detached from the pipe 8 or should burst.
I prefer to provide a head or cover 6 the full diameter of the container to facilitate its refilling, and this cover, besides being tight joint with the walls of the containern I accomplish this by providing a flange at the top of the container, having a seat for the cover and adjustable bolts for locking the cover on the seat. A rim 11 is mounted on the container walls having an annular seat with a gasket thereon to receive the edge of the disk 6 and bolts 12 are mounted in the rim 11 and levers 13 have forked outer ends to engage they Shanks of the bolts and bear on the heads thereof. The disk 6 is provided with an lannular rib 16 forming a bearing forthe levers 13, their outer .ends straddling the shanks of the bolts 12 and engaging the heads thereof, while their inner ends are pivotally connected to a sliding collar 32. A threaded pin 14 is centrally mounted in the disk 6 whereon the collar is slidable and held by means of a Wing nut 15. At one side the disk 6 is provided with a hinge 31 on which it tilts when the locking bolts are released by the movement of the wing nut 15. The movement of the nut 15 in one direction will clamp the cover 'securely on its seat in the top of the container and when the wing nut has been released, the pressure of the levers 13 will be relieved and the cover may then be easily and quickly removed. The dial 17 is graduated for a weight or monetary value, as may be desired, the figures on the dial being visible to the operator as it revolves past the peep opening 28 in the cover.
The indicator is held in place by hangers 19 and a supporting member 18. A sprocket 21 attached to a drum 20 engages suitable holes 31 punched in the dial plate and a cable 22 attached to the piston 24 by a bolt 23 causes rotation of the indicating dial as the piston descends, proportionately to the amount' of paste or grease dispensed. A
spring 33 rewinds the indicating dial when the piston is withdrawn for refilling the container.
I prefer to use a piston in this case having a large opening 26 with an air-tight cover, making it possible to refill the container without removing the entire piston. I also providea loosely mounted valve 27 which seats on andl automatically closes the opening 7 in the bottom of the container as soon as the contents have been discharged, thereby avoiding the escape of air under pressure and its tendency to scatter the oil or grease which may be contained in the pipe and hose between the container and the nozzle.
The pipe 8 and the hose lO will normally be filled with grease when the apparatus is in use. That is, the grease will flow from `,the container into the pipe and hose as soon as air pressure is admitted to the container and 'when the piston reaches the bottom, air
lunder pressure, if allowed to enter the pipe 8, would force the grease ahead of it until nearly all had been discharged from the hose' when the remainder, relieved of the resistance of the grease in front and acted upon by air pressure in the container, would be violently discharged from the hose and scattered over theuser as well as the car on which he was working. This would be particularly apt to occur il' the user of the apparatus was working under a car and using the hose at that point where he could not see the indicator or determine the position of the piston. In such case the piston lmight reach the bottom of the container v without the operator lknowing it and the air proper shape to the facing and secures thev same rigidly to the piston.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and .desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a deviceof the class described comprising a container with a removable cover,`
and means for admitting air under pressure, a lpiston therein, a'dial indicator rotatively mounted under said cover, means for connecting-said dial indicator with-said piston, means for opening and closing said cover, substantially as described.
