Description

W. S. GRESHAM.
FENCEPOST.
APPLICATION FILED uov.3. 1917.
Patented May 11,1920.
dummy UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. GRESHAM, 0F RICHLAND, MISSOURI.
FENCEPOST.
Application filed November 3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM S. GRESHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richland, in the county of Pulaski and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenceposts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fence posts and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character produced from cement or kindred plastic material, and it is an object of the invention to provide a post of this general character with novel and. improved means whereby the same is effectually reinforced or braced.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved post wherein means are provided for readily and conveniently attaching thereto suitable wire engaging members.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved post wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein;
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a fence post constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through my improved post as herein disclosed; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially 011 the line 38 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved post is made of cement or kindred plastic material and has its front and rear faces 1, flat and in parallel planes while the side faces 2, thereof are arranged in upwardly converging planes. The post is also of a width at all points longitudinally thereof in excess to its thickness or the distance between its opposed fiat faces 1. Disposed through the post is a series of longitudinally spaced openings 8, arranged at Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Serial No. 200,063.
substantially the transverse centers of the faces 1, and which afford means whereby wire engaging members 4, such as staples or the like, may be applied to the post.
Embedded within the post and extending substantially the entire length thereof, is a reinforcing member M, formed of a wire strand of requisite gage and which strand is bent back upon itself in substantially the form of a V, with the apex arranged adjacent the top of the post. The lower or free extremities of the strand of the member M are inwardly directed to afford the right angle extensions 5. The extensions 5 are arranged in the same plane as the re turned portions or arms 6, of the member M.
Also embedded within the post is a second reinforcing member M which is located at the base portion of the post, the member M is also substantially V shape in form with its apex upwardly directed and formed of a wire strand of requisite gage. The member M is of a length less than the length of the member M and is positioned between the returned portions or arms 6, of the member M and arranged in the same plane therewith. The lower or free extremities of the returned portions or arms 7 of the member M are substantially flush with the corresponding extremities of the returned portions or arms 6 of the member M and said lower extremities of the returned portions or arms 7 of the member M is provided with the inwardly directed extensions 8 arranged at right angles thereto and occupying the same plane.
As is particularly illustrated in Figs. 2
' and 3, it is to be noted that the openings 3 are arranged in a plane extending between the returned portions or arms 6 and 7 of the members M and M respectively, and intersecting the apices of said members, and that adjacent openings passing between the arms 6 and 7 are spaced apart a distance less than the distance between adjacent openings 8 passing only between the portions or arms 6. By this arrangement the post is effectively reinforced or braced against the strain imposed thereon by the wire or fence fabric secured to the post by the members 4. and against the extra strain imposed by stock, such as hogs or other comparatively small animals endeavoring to pass through the lowermost wires or fabric.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the principle and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a fence post formed of plastic material, a substantially V-shaped reinforcing member embedded within the post, and a second substantially V-shaped reinforcing member embedded within the post and of a length less than the length of the first member, both of said members occupying the same plane, the lower ends of both of the members being substantially flush and provided with inwardly directed extensions arranged within the same plane as the reinforcing members, said post being provided with a series of longitudinally spaced openings arranged in a plane extending between the side portions of the reinforcing members and intersting the apices thereof, the ad acent o enings passing between the side portions of both of the reinforcing members and be,-
ing spaced apart a distance less than the distance between adjacent openings passing between the returned portions of the first named reinforcing members, the post at all points longitudinally thereof being of a width in excess to its thickness.
2. Asanew article of manufacture, a fence post formed of plastic material, a substantially V-shaped reinforcing member embedded within the post, and a second substantially V-shaped reinforcing member embedded within the post and of a length less than the length of the first member, both of said members occupying the same plane, the lower ends of both of the members being substantially flush and provided with inwardly directed extensions arranged within the same plane as the reinforcing members, said post being provided with a series of longitudinally spaced openings arranged in a plane extending between the side portions of the reinforcing members and intersecting the apices thereof, the adjacent openings passing between the side portions of both of the reinforcing members being spaced apart a distance less than the distance between adjacent openings passing between the returned portions of the first named reinforcing member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
WILLIAM S. GRESHAM.
