VVALsH, Va j citizen ofthe United States, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Colum-l bia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vood-Refuse Burners, of which the following is a specification. `This inventionv relates to vburner for the destruction of combustible refuse, such as that of lumber mills. It belongs toY that class known as aircooled wherein a grate surface onto which the refuse to be consumed is delivered an-d through which `a supply of air for combustion is indrawn by the natural draft of the fire, is surroundedby a selfsupporting frusto-conical casing, around the lower edge of which air is `freely admitted to" keep ythe casing wall' cool..
In furnaces of this class it has heretofore been considered necessary or desirable to provide an inner wall, retaining the fire within thelimit of the grate and deflecting upward the air admitted around the lower edge of the casing. l
This construction `is open to objection in that in strong wind fire is blown outaround the fewer edge of the casing, or the same may occur yby an occasional back fire. To these casualties objection istakenby the fire underwriters as they endanger the structure of the refusedelivery conveyer and adjacent Further. the fire underwriters require that the upper end of the burner smoke-stack be protected with a dome screen of 'relatively fine mesh to prevent escape of flying par ticles of 'light wood. It also permits an inflow of air to cool the inner wall of the casing -9 and its framework.
. .In burners of this class where anoverdelivery of refuse may at any time cause, for a short time, an'excessivedelivery of smoke, when the fiame breaks through, the gases ignite and may form a dangerous blow back, the flame cannot escape through the screen 13.`
The screen 14 prevents the escape of the lighter portions of the refuse lifted from the fire by the draft and holds them in reasonable proximity to the flame ofthe re, where they are periodically consumed, the air rising up the inner'wall of the casing and heated during such 'ascent supplying the necessary oxygen for such combustion. 1
The screen l5 at the top of the smokestack affords an additional security against the escape of sparks which renders the burner ,extra vsafe in meeting the requirements ofthe fire underwriters.
As the smoke-stack 12 has to be'carried I' lto--an elevation to meet the requirements of frusto-conical casing suitably supported the fire underwriters and as that height may in some4 cases induce too strong a draft through the fire, that draft may'be checked when found necessary by opening the doors 17 of the/aperture 16.V 7
Havinr now particularly described my invention, l hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, `is`:
1. A 'wood refuse burner, comprising the combinationwith a circular hearth to which the refuse to be burned is delivered, of a lthereabove, the lower edge of which casing is a short distance above the hearth, a smoke-stack extending upward vfrom the smaller end of the casing, a screen across the f smoke-stack adjacent its connection to the casing, and a` screened hood across the top of the smoke-stack.
2. A wood refuse burner, comprising the 'combination with a circular hearth to which theorefuse to be burned is delivered, of a frusto-conical casing suitably supported thereabove, the lower edge of which casing is a short distance above the hearth, a
smokestack extending upward from the smaller end of -the casing, said stack pro- -vided with apertures intermediateof its length, damperslfor closing said apertures,
a screen across the smoke-stack adjacent'its connection to the casing, and a screen across the upper endof the same.
- 3. A wood refuse burner, comprising the combination with a circular hearth to which the'refuseto bel destroyed is delivered, a frustoconical casingsuitably supported to inclose the fire on the hearth, the lower edge of said casing being a vshort distance above 'the level of the hearth, a screen extending between 'the hearth level and the lower edge of the casingto close the space between the hearth and the lower edge of the casing, a
