SWAGGER-STICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Application filed August 29, 1919. Serial No. 320,571.
f0 (zZZ (Oil/07H it may concern:
Be it known that I, James M. OALLAI-IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swagger-Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to swagger sticks, canes, umbrellas and the like having attached thereto a useful implement, it being I an improvement over what is disclosed in my application for U. S. Letters Patent Serial No. 28%,056, filed March 21, 1919.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which may be easily produced at reasonable cost and which will avoid the necessity of the possessor handling a variety of objects which usually have been handled by other persons.
It may be used to turn door knobs or door latches, as a support while riding on a street car by hooking through the usual strap or strap bar, it can be hooked into the handle on the end of a car seat to steady the person carrying it; in the case of certain modifications it may be used to lean against .when placed against a sharp corner or a rounded surface; it may be used as a push mg or pulllng implement, and it has a variety of other uses.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of one modification of my invention and Fig. 2 an elevation thereof with a slight modification in the handle; Fig. 3 is r a plan. view of a second modification with parts broken away; Fig. at. is an end view and Fig. 5 an elevation thereof; l ig. G is a plan view of a third modification, Fig. 7 an end view and Fig. 8 an elevation thereof; Fig. 9 shows one of the many modifications of handles which may be used. Fig. 10 shows a short section of a hook and illustrates covering thereon.
The first mentioned modification (Figs. 1 and 2) consists of a swagger stick having a handle 1, in one end of which is suitably fastened the hook part A, which comprises the part 3 suitably fastened in the stick, the offset part 4t and the hook 5.
The secondmodifieation (Figs. 8 to 5) also has the handle 1 in which is suitably fastened the hook B which consists of the part 6 suitably fastened in the handle, the offset comprising the double bend 7, 8 and the hook 9.
The third modification (Figs. 6 to 8) also has a handle 1, in which is suitably fastened the rod 10, which is attached for example, by spot welding to approximately the central part of the double hook C which as shown consists of two hooks which may be similar or somewhat different, each having an offset part 11, forming together a concave part.
These three modifications of the hook shown onthe drawings and described above do not represent the limits of my invention, but are merely examples of a large number of varieties.
Thehooks may be made of any suitable material and, if desired, may be smooth or roughened or may be covered in whole or in part, as desired, with any suitable material for the purpose of making the hook part pleasing to the eye or to give it a good grip, or both. Merely by way of example I may state that such covering material may be fiber, leather or rubberized tubing. In Fig. 10, 20 is a short section of a hook and 21 a sectionof the covering thereon.
The hook is fastened in the handle in any desired manner; merely by way of example I may state that it may be screwed in, glued, or there may be a rivet through a ferrule and the rod end of the hook. The rod end of the hook may extend into the handle a short distance, as shown for example in Fig. 1, or it may extend nearly all the way through the handle, as shown in Fig. 2, to permit of the use of a smaller handle and yet maintain the strength. The handle may be any desired, straight or bent at the end opposite the hook, it may or maynot be covered, as desired, and. it may have any desired appurtenance thereon, an example thereof being shown in Fig. 9 where in 12 indicates a hand strap.
Any of my hooks may be bent either to the right or to the left; merely by way of example I have shown on the drawings the hook A bent one way, the hook B bent the other way and the double hook C bent both ways.
The hooks may have their ends bent as shown at 18 (Figs. 1 and 2), at 14 (Figs. 3 to 5) and at 15 and 16 (Figs. 6 and 7). The bent ends 15 and 16 may or may not be similar to each other.
In the application of my swagger stick to a doorknob, to turn it, the hook 5 of the modification of Figs. 1 and 2 is placed about the shank of the knob, the central part of the hook bearing against the shank. The offset part 4 bears against the periphery of the knob and on theapplication of pressure on the handle to hold the hook against the shank and the offset part against the periphery of the knob, the device jams on the knob and shank,-and a swinging movement of the handle will cause the knob to turn.
In the modifications of Figs. 3, 4: and 5 the hook 9 is applied to the shank of the .knob, similarly to the book 5, while the off- .nected at one end thereof to the handle and a hook connected directly to the other end of said offsetting part, whereby the hook is laterally offset from the handle, the distance a 7 from the offsetting part to the inner surface of the hook farthermost therefrom being so that said inner surface of the hook may be applied to the shank of a door knob and the offsetting part to the periphery of the knob.
2. A swagger stick comprising a handle and a means for grasping and turning a rounded fiat spheroidal doorknob, said means comprising an offsetting part connected at one end thereof to the handle and a. hook connected directly to the other end of said offsetting part, whereby the hook is laterally offset from the handle, the distance from the offsetting part to the inner surface of the hook farthermost therefrom being so that said inner surface of the hook may be applied to the shank of a doorknob and the offsetting part to the periphery ofthe knob the extremity of the hook being bent outwardly in a curve the reverse of that of the main body of the hook.
3. A swagger-stick comprising a handle and a compound implement at the end thereof, said implement comprising a means for pushing and a means for grasping and -turn ing a rounded flat spheroidal knob and for pulling, said means for pushing comprising a part in the form of a simple curve the concave portion of which faces away from the handle in the general direction of the axis of the handle, and said means for grasping and turning and for pulling comprising a hook, the body of which is continuous with that of the aforesaid concave portion, the hook lying in a plane which is at an angle to the axis of the handle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES M. CALLAHAN.
