To all whlom it @my concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KELLY, a Jcitizen' of the United States, residing, at
Jamaica', in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and usethe following` is a specification. y
This invention relates to-`door stops and has particular reference to aemeans which may be adapted` for use in connectionvwith Aany door closing device or check, in order to retain the door in anopen position.
- In the'ordinary form of door stops the saine are usually arranged at the bottom of the door and contact with the lioor for retaining the same in an sopen position, but as, such arrangement has been Pfound to have many disadvantages one of the principal objects of this invention is to overcome these objections by arranging the door stop means at the top' of the door frame, in an out of the way position. i
Another ob] ect 1.of the invention is the provision of a device-of the, rclass describedf which iis entirely automatic in operation,- whereby the same is rendered operative for retaining the door inan open position,by
tances and which is as readily rendered inoperative by the ordinary force required to `close the door. f
` A still further' object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class de scribed which is of simpleconstruction, in-
expensive to manufacture and which is easily installed. d
With these and other objects'in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of partsmore fully described, and. pointedv out inthe following description vand 'claims andv illus-A trated in the accompanying ldrawingsin which: C .a E Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a" doorway1 showing the door stop appliedand holding the'door in an open position",
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view'on theA 4line 2-2 of Fig. 1. v` A I Referring to th drawings A designates a door frame provided with a door B which is hinged to the frame as shown at C: 'The frame isprovide'd with the usual top bar D' .whichl acts as a limit for the closing of the door. yThe door stop comprisesa link `10 which Vis pivoted by means of a bolt 11 to the bifurcated lugr `12 on` the baseplate 13 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Api'. 27, 1920.
191e. serial' No. 291,025.
which is secured adj acentthe upper portion of the door lB byV means of screws' or the like'. '.A cottergpin llis passed through the bolt l1 whereby the link maybe readily disconnected 'from the lug 12 when it isA desired to removethe stop. The link 10 is slotted as at 15 for the ma'orportion of its length `and the inner end o said slotted portion communicates'y with an enlarged opening 16 for a purpose tobe hereinafter described. The outer extremity of the link 10 i has secured to its underside a spring finger 16,'whichl is provided with an embracmg portion y17 and 'an outturnedl lip 18. Secured tothe under face tothe top bar D is a base member 19^Which is provided with a downwardly extendin spherical head 20 having .a reduced nec -21\ which engages with the slotted portion 15- of the link and thus'- be vseen that while the device is 'intended 'primarily to retain thef doorr in an open position, it is also utilized 'as a means for preventing the door from contacting vwith the wall and it is therefore a substitute for the ordinary base board stops which are now in use;
In operation of the device when the door is swung to the position 'shown in the drawings the embracing portion 17 ofthe finger guides the same in its movement. It will i j S16v engagesvand co-acts'with the head 20 to` retain the door in -an open position. In `the ordinary opening of the door the device will not operate to hold the same in its openposi- 'tion due to the fact that the inner secured portion of the end of the embracing vportion of the spring 16 co-acts with the link 10 to proj ectthe head past the lip 18 and when it is desired to render the stop active in order to retain the door in its ,open position it is necessary to open the same and hold it m`- mentarily in order 'to roperly positionthe l head withinA the em racing' portion 17. When it is desired to disengage the head from the embracing portion in order to close the door', the usual power necessary in closing a door is applied and the finger 15 will spring over thehead 20, allowing the mem-f. -ber to assume the-position shown in dotted lines of Fig.l 2 of the drawing. Upon the openin of the door to the required distance to ren er the stop active the head 20 will contact ^with the out-turned lip .18' which acts as a cam to flex the finger 16 suiiicientlyl to allow the headto enter the embracing portion 17. By removing the cotter pin 14;
and the bolt 11 the link 15 may bermoved to a position to register the opening 16 with the head 20 thus allo-wing the removal of the link 10.
hibited and reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fall within `the scope of the appended claims.
W hat is claimed as new is; l. A device for retaining a swingingv door in open position comprising a link removably pivoted to said door, a slotted portion in said link, a head depending from the door frame and provided with a reduced neck adapted to engage with said. slotted portion, and a spring finger provided with an em- ,bracing portion and an out-turned lip adapted to coperate with the head for retaining the door in an open position.
2. A door stop comprising a link adapted to be' pivotally supported by the door, a plate adapted to be secured to the door frame and provided with a depending shank having a vspherical head, a spring finger secured to the free terminal of the link and provided with an embracing portion adapted to ac-I commodate the speri'cal head, said finger also having anfout turned lip curved away from the embracing portion, the link having a slot freely -receiving the shank and co-acting therewith to maintain said link between the` 'head and the plate and serving to guide the lipover the head to position theembracing portion thereover or remove the same therefrom.
3. A device of the class described comprising a link adapted-tolbe pivotally supported by a door, a shank adapted to be iX- edly supported to the door frame, the link having a slot therein freely receiving vthe shank thereon, a sphericalVl head formed on the shank and positioned vat one side of the link so as tokunderlie the 'slot and support the link, and a spring secured to one end of4 the link and havinga free terminal adjacent to one end of the slot curved to conform Lesasvi Awith saidl spherical head and curved away prising a link adapted to be pivoted at one end to a door. and having a slot therein, a base plate adapted to be fixedly secured to the door frame, a spherical head, a reduced neck ,connecting the latter with the base plate,jthe slot of said link freely receiving thereduced neck to guide the link in its l movements between the baseplate andthe spherical head, a spring finger secured to the free extremity of the link and having an outwardly bowed portion adapted to directly overlie the outer extremity of the slot and constituting an embracing portion for the reception of the spherical. head when the latter registers with the outer extremity of the slot, the free extremity of the bowed portion enga ing the link and having an out-turned 11p constituting an entering mouth to receive the head.
5. A device of the class described compris-v A ing'a link adapted to be pivoted at one end v -to a doorand having a slot therein, a base plate adapted to be fixedly secured to the door frame, a spherical head, a reduced neck connecting the latter with the base plate, the slot' of said link freely receiving the reduced neck to guide the link in its movements between the base plate and the spherical head, a spring finger secured to the' free extremity of the link andhaving an outwardly bowed portion adapted to directly overlie the outer extremity of the slot and constituting an embracing portion for the reception of the spherical head when the latter re 'sters with the outer extremity of the slot, t e free extremit of the bowed portion engaging the link an having an out turned lip constituting an entering mouth to receive the head, the opposite extremity of the bowed portion of the linger being adapted to co-act with the link to serve as means for forcibly projecting the head from the embracing portion as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
