The cover may also have a display portion to attract attention to the box or carton, and this display portion may be shaped so as to permit inspection of the contents without the cover being moved to open position. f

Another object of my invention is to pro vide a box or cotton, which is simple in construction; but which can be easily and. cheaply made; yet he suilioiently strong and compact to enable it to serve efficiently the purposes for which it is intended.

The above and other objects and advantages of my invention are clearly set forth in the following specification, taken in corn Ifection with the accompanying drawings; ahd the novel features of my invention are precisely defined. in the appended claims. This disclosure, however, is to be taken explanatory only, and embodiments other than those actually shown herein may be resorted to in practice; within the scope and spirit of my invention; as indicated by the terms in wh ch the claims are expressed and the variations .in the wording of the same.

I wish to state at the outset that in the following description I shall portray a box or rarton which is made out of a single blank of cardboard, according to my invention. 'In order to make my improved box or carton in the simplest or best fashion and at the same time produce an efficient construction, 1 preferably have recourseto a foldable blank, such as is shown in Fig. 1.

This blank may be of cardboard or other suitable material; and the line of demarcation between the parts out of which is formed the body 1 and the lid 2 isindi cated by the numeral 4. This line and all. other broken lines on the blank represent score lines; that is, lines madeby scoring or cut. ting the cardboard on one face only, but not through it'; while the continuous lines,

Ishall deal first with the part of the blank below the transverse .line 4. This comprises a central .portion- 5, which will constitute the bottom of the finished box; and below and above the portionfi, in Fig. 1, are

6 and 7 for forming the front and back of the box, respectively. These portions are marked off from the portion 5 by the score lines 8; and both f the portion 6 and the portion 7 .have'termithe sides of the portion 5 are longitudinal portions 10, for forming the sides of thecompleted box; and each of these ortions 10 will have an extension 11, of t e same length as the sides of the box, and of the same width as the height of the sides. 6 and 7, and the portions 10 from the portion 5; and similar score lines '8 mark off the portions 10 from the extensions 11.

To give the body its shape, the portions 6 and '7 are bent or folded up at right angles to the portion 5, about the score lines 8 between them and this portion; and the tensions 9 at each side of the box are bent or folded, about the score lines 8 at their inner ends, toward each other, and over the portions 10. The portions 10 are then bent up about the score lines 8 between them and the-portion 5, against the outer faces of the extensions 9; that is, the faces of these extensions which areunder those seen by the observer in Fig.1; and the extensions 11 are turned inward and downward. liy folding the extensions 11 along the score lines 8 between them and the portions 10 down into the boxfthe portions 9 at each side are held between the portionslO and extensions 11, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 9, partie ularly the latter. To make the lid or cover out of the part of the blank above the line 4:. in Fig. 1, I provide this part with two portions 14, for formingthe' sides of the cover The lid will in effect be hinged to the body along the score line 4; and the portions 14 may be conceived as beginning at the opposite or free end of the lid and extending along each sidetoward the hinged end; widening as they go. The section 16, finally, is bent in the opposite direction outward, so as to lieagainst theolower face of the top of the cover 2; this face being the one shown in Fig. 1. In this position, it will be secured by a tab 19, which. will be bent back to allow the edge of the portion 16 to. be passed under it, and then released to engage and hold the portion 16.

When the box is closed, the extensions 20 will be in the same planes as the portions 1 1, to which they are connected; and the side portions 14 of the cover 2, with these can tensions 20, will. fit down over the side portions 10 of the body 1. To support the box for display, the lid is folded back and down beneath the box, in. With the blank shown in Fig. 1, the cover is bent back and down around the line 4:, which is at the rear edge of the body '1; and then forward around the. line 8 running .trorn the side edges of the section 3 out between the portions 1% and extensions 20; th's line being", as above stated, located about the middle or shown in Fig. 5, however, the cover is intended to be bent back and down, not about the line but about a score line 8 just above the section In the blank this line 4. In this case, the section 3 does body 1.

hinged edge of the cover 2 as far as the middle of the section 3 (as in Fig. 1), terminate with their wider ends on a line with the outer or free edge of this section. Hence the portions 21 must be of the same length as the section 3 and the length of the portions 21 must be approximately the same as the distance between the score line 8 along the hinged edge of the section 3 and the bot tomportion 5. The portions 21 extend from the line 8 at the hinged end of the section to score lines 8 at the free end of the same. This blank also has one or more tabs 19; and one or more tongues 22, cut in the bot tom 5 adjacent the score line 8 at the rear thereof. These tongues will extend downward from the back 7 when the box is formed; see Fig. 10; and when the cover 2 is'folded under the body 1, these tongues 22 will engage the ed e 23 of the opening left by the section w en the same is elevated; and prevent the body from sliding forward-on the cover 2. \Vhen set up for display by means of the cover 2, abox made from the blank in Fig. 6 will appear as in Fig. 7; which shows the same from the rear. Extensions 20 may be pro "ided or dispensed with, according to the users preference. I may, of course, cut tongues 22 in the bottom 5 of the blank shown on Fi 1; locating them where they will engage t e edge 23 in the cover 2 when the box or carton is set up as in Figs. 2, 3

and 4.

\Vhen the blank shown in Fig. 6 is folded to form a box, and the cover turned down under the box to elevate the rear end of the same, the portions21 will not lie flat against the rear end 7 of the box, and the portion of the lid between the top edge-of the rear end 7 and the score line 8, which passes across therover at the hinged end of the section 3 will not be in line with the rear end 7 of the Instead, this portion will extend backward a little, and with the section 3 will incline slightly to the rear to about the same extent as the section 3 when the box made out of the blank shown in Fig. 1 is set up in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. With the parts in these positions, the portions 21 will inclose a small triangular. space with the rear end of the box and the portions of the lid or cover between the line 4: and the line 8 which passes across the lid or cover at the hinged end of the section 3. In other words, when the lid is folded under the body 1 and the tongues 22 engage the edge 23, these portions 21 will be caused to exert some tension on the portion of the lid between the score line 8 which passes across the lid at the hinged end of the section 2, and the score line 4 at the hinged end of the lid; and in cifect pull the section 3 backward to the required extent.

6 and 7 and locate L-shapcd slots 24 in. these portions at I provide the portions 10 with extensions 25; and in the edges of these extensions adjacent the

portions

6 and 7, I make diagonal cuts 26. From the inner edge of each of these cuts runs a score line 8, diagonally in the other direction back to the edge of the projection 25. These cuts 26 make widening tongues 27; and the aforesaid lines 8 delineate foldable points 28 on these tongues 27. When the points are folded from full lineto dotted line position, as indicated in Fig. 11, the tongue is caused to become narrow, instead of wider, toward the portion 6. When the portions of the blank are folded up, the points 28 are folded in this way; and the tongues then passedthrough the slots 21. After they are through, the points 28 are turned back into the plane of the tongues again; making them wider than the length of the horizontal portions 29 of the slots 24 which they. occupy so that they cannot be withdrawn. This expedient may be adopted for either the portions (3, 7, or 14 though shown in connection with the portion 7 only.

I have asserted above that the extensions 20 may be omitted when they are not wanted. they are left oil, the portions 10 will be provided with slots 30; so that the points or corners of the portions 14 of the cover may be inserted into them whenthe cover is closed; and hold the cover securely when the box is shut. This point is illustrated in Fig. 8.

The display portion or section 3, in order to be in display position, need only be maintained suiiiciently upright to present the advertising matter on its forward face to advantage when the body of the receptacle is supported in display position by the aid of the cover, as herein described.

If desired, 1 may shape the portion 2 of the blank shown in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 6 so as to cause the extensions 15' to be engaged, to hold the side portions 14 at right angles to the lid, in the same manner as the extensions 9 are engaged by the

6 and 7 at right angles to the bottom of the box or carton. For this purpose I merely dispense with the portion 16; utilizing onlythe portions 17 j and 1.8 between the extensions 15. When the portions gitudinal score lines 8 and the extensions 15 bent toward each other, the

17 and 18 will be folded as before around the trans 14: are folded up around the ion tongues 12 at the outer edges of the portions 11; and the lid 2 between the section 3 and the portion 18 will be provided with one or more tongues exactly like the tongues 13.

The tabs 19 will therefore be omitted. hen the

portions

17 and 18 are folded over the extensions 15, the tongues at the outer edge of the portion 17, corresponding with the tongues 12, will be made to engage with thetongues between the portion 18 and the section 3, corresponding to the tongues 13; in the same way as shown in Fig. 9. Fun thermore, the tongues at the outer edge of the portion 17 will project through the lid beyond the top or outside face of the same; and when the box is set up, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, 7 and 7, the ends of these tongues on the portion 17 can be caused to enter slots in the bottom 5. These tongues will therefore cooperate with the tongues 29, to 'hold the lid 2 and body 1 in proper relative positions to display the contents of the carton.

It will be understood, of course, from the foregoing, that my improved box or carton, whether made from the blank shown in 1 or that shown in Fig. 6, can only be maintained in display position. by folding the portion of the cover carrying thesides 1st and the end made up of the

16, 17 and 18, under the end of the body to which the cover is hinged in other words, thebody of the box could not be supported it the cover is simply turned down at the back, of the bDX and stood vertically on its free end. In such a position, the cover could not bear the weight of the body 1 and the contents for the reason that the portions 21' are not adapted to permit the cover to be utilized in this way.

Having described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States is asfollowss- 1. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover therefor, the cover being connected to one end ot the body and being provided with a movable section for permitting the contents of the receptacle to be seen With out the cover requiring to be moved to open position, said cover being formed to enable it to be folded under the body to support the latter in position with said end elevated to display the contents of same.

2. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover therefor, the cover being provided with a movable section for permitting the contents of the receptacle to be seen without the cover requiring to be moved to open position, said cover being formed to enable it to be folded rearward and under the body to support the latter in position to display the contents thereof, and simultaneously elevate said section into position. to present to view the lower face of the same.

3. A. receptacle comprising a blank folded to provide a body and a cover, the latter being formed to enable it to be folded downward at one end of the body and under the latter to permit the bottom of the'body to rest thereon and to elevate said end and support the body in position to display the contents of the same.

A receptacle comprising a bod fand a cover therefor, the latter being hinged to the body and having sides maintained. in fixed relation to the top of the cover and widening away from, the free end of the cover, the cover being adapted to be dis posed so that the sides will be below the body to support the same at an incline for display.

5. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover therefor, the latter being hinged to the rear end of the body and being transversely foldable to enable it to be turned under the body to permit the bottom of the body to rest thereon and to elevate said end and support the body in position to display the contents of same.

6. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover therefor, the cover being lunged to the bodyand having side portions which widen away from the free end of said cover, said cover being transversely foldable adjacent the wider ends of said side portions to on able it to be turned under the body to support the latter in position to display the contents of same.

7. A receptacle comprising a single blank bent to form a body and a cover hinged to one end of the body, the cover being formed to enable it to be lifted and folded along a transverse line between its ends to enable the end of the cover to be carried below the plane ot the bottom of the body to permit the bottom to rest thereon, the body then being capable of being supported by the aid of the cover, with said end elevated, to display the contents.

8. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged to one end thereof, said cover being adapted to be turned downward and under the body to permit the bottom of the body to rest thereon and elevate said end of the body, and having sides to be disposed. below the body and support the same at an 'incline for display.

A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged to one'end of thebody along an edge of said end, said cover being adapted to be folded about a line adjacent said edge to extend across said end, and be ing further adapted to be folded about a line adjacent its free end under said body to elevate said end of the body, said cover having sides adjacent its free end to be-dis-- posed below the body to support the same at an. incline for display.

11. A. receptacle comprising a a cover hinged to one end thereof, said cover being adapted tobe turned downward and under the body, and having sides to be disposed below the body and support the same at an incline for display, said cover bearing a display section adapted to maintain a position above the body when the cover is turned down under the body.

12. A receptacle coinprising'a body and a cover therefor, said cover being hinged to one end of the body along one edge of said end, said cover being adapted to be turned body and about said edge to extend across said end and to be folded about a transverse line under the body, said cover having sides between said line and said free end to be disposed below the body and support the same at an incline for display, said cover bearing a display section adapted to be maintained in a position above the body when the cover is folded under the body.

13. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged. to one end of the body along an edge of said end, said cover being adapted to be folded about a line adjacent said edge to extend across said end, and being further adapted to be folded about a line adjacent its free said cover having sides adjacent its free end to be disposed below the body to support the same at an incline for display, said cover bearing a display section adapted to maintain a display position when the cover is folded under said body.

14. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged to one end of the body along an edge of said end, said cover having tapering sides, the narrow ends of said sides being located and the wide ends being remote from the opposite end of the cover, said cover being adapted to be turned about a line adjacent the said edge to extend across said end of the body and being adapted to be folded about a transverse line at said wide ends of the sides under said body, whereby the sides will support the oody at an incline for display.

15. A receptacle comprising a body and "end, said cover having tapering sides,

at the free end of the cover to close the body or a cover therefor, said cover being hinged to one end of the body along one edge of said the narrow ends of said sides being at the free end of the cover and thewide ends of said sides being remote from the opposite end, said cover being adapted to be turned. about said edge to extend across said end of the body and be folded about a transverse line at the wide ends of the sides, under the body, whereby the sides will support the body at an incline for display, said cover bearing a display section adapted to be maintained in a display position when the cover is folded downward and under the body.

16. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged to one end of the body along an edge of said end, said cover having tapering sides, the narrow ends of said "sides be ing. located at the free end of the cover and the wide ends being remote from the opposite end of the cover, saidcover being folded about a line adjacent the said edge to extend across said end of the body and being adapted to be folded about a transverse line at said Wide ends of the sides, under said body, whereby the sides will support the body at an incline for display, said cover bearing a display section adapted to be maintained in a display position when the cover is folded downward and under the body.

17. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged to one end of the body, the cover bearing a display portion, the cover being adapted to be turned so as to extend across the plane of the bottom of the body, the body then being capable of being supported by the aid of the cover, with said end elevated, in display position, the display portion also being adapted to maintain display position when the body is in display position, and means for enabling the cover and the body-to besecured to each other when the body is in display position.

18. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover hinged thereto, the cover bearing a display portion, the cover be turned so as to extend across the plane of the bottom of the body, the body then being capable of being supported by the aid of the cover in display position, the display portion also being adapted to be maintained in a display position when the body is in display position, the cover also-having a portion .which is adapted to be folded under the body when the latter is in display position.

19. A receptacle comprising a body and a cover having hinged body at a point remote from the front end of the latter, the cover having side portions and an end portion and being movable about said hinged connection with the body either being adapted to connection with the to be carried into position to support the latter with its rear end elevated'to display its contents, said end of the cover when the body is thus ele vated being located beneath the body remote from thefi'on 't end of the latter and the bottom of the body then resting on a part of said cover. v

20. A receptacle comprising a. body and a cover having hinged connection with the bod at'a point remote from the front end of t 1e latter, the cover having side portions and an end portion and being movable about said hinged connection with the body either to close the body or to be carried into position to support the latter with its rear end elevated to display its contents, said end of the cover when the body is thus elevated being located beneath the body remote from the front end of the letter, and the bottom of the body then resting on a part of said cover, said receptacle also having display.
