Be it known that we, FRED J. BossER'r and CHARLES T. Bossnirr, ycitizens of theUnited States, residing at Selma, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vine-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in vine cutters and more partlcularly to devices adapted for use in cutting bunches of grapes and the like from the vine.

An important object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and expeditious and convenient in use.

A further object is to improve the device shown in our Patent Number 1,265,296.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. Y

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a body portion or shank bent rearwardly at its upper end as at 11.

It will beseen that where in our previous patent the strap by means of which the cutter is secured to the hand extends about the whole hand and is adapted to engage the hand adjacent the knuckles, in the present device the strap engages but the first and4th fingers Vof the hand and these between the second and third joints thereof. We have found that the metal guard or holder of our previous patent had a tendency to chafe the hand and that as the guard hadno means to prevent slipping of the device this chafng wasfaccentuated. In the present device however when the hand is bent as'it will be in grasping Va bunch of grapes, the position of the guard is such as to absolutely prevent slipping thereof. 'Furthermore we have found that a blade having the lsame transverse angle as the shank thereof does not assume the proper cutting relation with the stem'to be cut. What we claim is:

l. A vine cutter comprising a plate, a blade offset therefrom and angularly disposed thereto longitudinally and transversely, a covering of leather arranged on one side of said plate, extensions formed on each side of said leather covering, said eX- tensions being arranged over the opposite side of said plate and secured thereto, a strap formed on one end of said covering, said strap being adapted to overlie the body portion ofthe covering,vmeans for forming loops between the body portion and the strap, and means for securing the free end of said strap. 2. A vinecutter comprising a plate, a blade offset therefrom and angularly disposed thereto longitudinally and transversely, a covering of leather arranged on one side of saidv plate, extensions formed on each side of said leather covering, said eX- tensions being arranged over the opposite side ot' said plate and secured thereto, a strap formed` on one end of said covering, said strap being adapted to overlie the body portion of the covering, the body portion being provided with transverse slits, said strap being adapted to be received in said slits to form loops, andmeans for securing the free end of the strap.

In a vine cutter a shank and a blade offset from the shank, said blade being angularly disposed to said shank longitudinally and transversely, and means for preventing the metal of said shank from contacting the hand comprising, a body portion formed of leather or the like and provided with flaps folding about said shank, a rivet extending through said body portion, shank and flaps, an end flap formed upon said body portion and extendingA about the lower end of said shank, a rivet extending through said body portion, shank and end flap, a buckle loop also secured to said shank by said last named rivet and carrying a buckle, rivets securing the Lipper end of said body portion to said shank at the offset thereof connecting the shank, and blade strapsy formed uponA said body portion, the upper end of said body portion extending downwardly through said loops, the eX- tremity of said upper end being provided with openings adapted to co-act with the pin of 'said'buckle In testimony whereof weV aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
