To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL IBAcH, a citizen of Germany, who have declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadel hia, in the county of Philadelphia and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piercing-Punches and Dies, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to an im proved punch press particularly adapted for punching holes in the rims of wire wheels, which, as is well known in certain types of construction, are located at an angle to the base or channeled portion of the rim in order to receive the wire spokes at the proper angles to the plane of the wheel.

but has a wide range of use wherever a mechanism of the character may be adapted articles. V
The objects of the invention are to prO- vide a novel arrangement for locating the articles in the punch press, for punching a hole therein preferably at an-angle to a portion of the article, as supported in the punch press, although not necessarily limited to the angular arrangement, and then upon a removal from the article of either the punching or die element of the press depending on which is moved, to provide means for stripping or removing the article from the punch after the opening has been punched therein.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel arrangement for punching the, holes at an angle to the rim of a Wire wheel construction, providing, in a simplified punch construction, a support adapted to hold the rim at an angle whereby when a press is operated the opening punched therethrough will be made at an angle to the body portion of the rim of the wheel, a further feature being to facilitate punching the holes when adjacent the rim flanges.

and these standards require, that a space of a certain width must be left at the center of the rim, which shall be uninterrupted,

Further objects of this invention relate to economies of manufacture and details of construction as will hereinafter appear from the detailed description tofollow. I accomplish the objects of my invention in one instance by the devices and means described in the following specification, but it is evident that thesame may be varied widely without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as is'pointed out in the appended claims. Structures constituting certain embodiments of my invention, one of which may be the preferred, are illus trated in the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which:

One suitable means for mounting the punch 14 consists in supporting the same in a horizontally extending horn 15 suitably positioned within the stand 10 of the machine in' any desired manner, as by that illustrated in the drawing, wherein a mandrel 16 extends in an opening 17 in the standard and suitable means are provided for preventing rotation of the horn 15. To this end the support 10 is provided with a groove 18 within which fits a squared retaining member 19 secured to the horn 15 by means of the bolts 20, for example. The squared edges of the lock 19-fit within the groove 18 which has the parallel sides as shown, in order to rigidly maintain the horn 15 in the standard of the press against rotation or movement. The punch 14 is adjustable adjacent the outer edge or portion of the horn 15 and any means for adjustably supporting the punch in the horn 15 may be provided. The means illustrated herein consist in locating the same in an opening 26 in the horn 15, and providing the screw' bolt 27 through the end ofthe horn 15- and adapted to engage the punch 14 and hold the same securely in position. It will thus be seen that the punch 14 is adjustably mounted in the punching press.
One form of support for the articles to be operated upon anda mechanism for strip-' ping the same from the punch after a punchlng operation has been performed, consists in providing a movable support 30, this sup-- port, in the particular punching machine designed herein, being provided with an inclined base 31 adapted to receive the rim of the wheel.
The support 30 is provided with an open-- ing 32 therethrough, through which the punching point 14 of the punch freely extends, the support 30 being adapted to slide over the punch as will hereinafter appear. Between the support-30 and the horn 15 is located mechanism 'forreturning the support to normal position and stripping the article oif the punch after a punching operation' has been performed. One suitable mechanism for performing this function consists in providing an arm 35 pivoted at 36 to a support 37 suitably secured as by the screw bolt 38 to the horn 15. The stripper 35 isprovided with an opening 39 therethrough, adapted toreceive a stop device secured in the horn 15for1'rring means to limit the return of the stri pe to normal position. su table arrangement therefor consists in a boltl40 screw threaded into the horn 15, as shown, the bolt 40 passing through the opening 39 in the stripper 35. The horn 15is provided with a recess 41 \35 and support 30' adapted to receive a coil spring 42, which bears on one end against the bottom of the recess'41, and on the other end against the bottom of the stripper 35. The spring operates to return the support or stripper to normal position and remove the article from As the die 13 operated by suitable mechanism of this machine, (not shown) is returnedafter a punching operation to a cer; tain set position, this operation may be utilized, if desired, to additionally insure the returning of the support 30 to normal position and the stripping of the article off the punch 14. Thus, I have shown in the .drawings a strap 45 connected at 46 bythe bolts 47, to the stripper arm 35; the strap 45 extending upwardly to a point adjacent theoverhanging. arm 11 of the standard. The press 12 may be provided, if desired, with an extension, such as the plate 48 rigidly secured by means of the bolt 49 to the lower surface ofthe press 12, the extension 48 being so located as to engage the strap 45 and insure the raising of the stripper 35 to proper normal position. The plate 48 is preferably provided with an adjustable stud 50 screw threaded into the end of the plate and held in adjusted position by the nut 51. Thus the contact of the plate 48 through thestud 50 with the strap 45 may be properly adjusted with relation to the adjustable stop 40 and timed with the operation of the punch to insure the proper return of the stripper 35 and support to normal position. It is to be understood that the additional means in the strap 45v and the projection 48 on the press for insuring the stripping of the article from the punch 14 and the return of the support 30 to nor- 'mal position may be entirely omitted, if de- .particularly for quantity production and the punching of a large number of holes in a minimum amount of time. I
The operation of the improved mechanism described will, it is believed, be readily understood. It will be seen that the rim of the v wheel A with its clencher edge or flanges B may be readily positioned on support 30 in an inclined hole therein even adjacent a flange. After the article has properly been I positioned on support 30, the press is operated and upon a descent of the ress member 12, die 13 engages the base the rim A carrying the same, together with the support '30 and the stripper arm downwardly, thus forcing the punch 14 through the base of the channeled rim A of the wheel. It is to be understood that the moving parts of my improved type of punching-press could be readily reversed and the punch moved while the die remains stationary. It is further apparent that various other specific detailed construction of the several cooperating parts of the mechanism described could readily be varied, as may be deemed'desirable, expedient or necessary by any person skilled in the art, and the details described herein, while particularly coiiperating in the arrangement shown, and particularly effective and efficient in operation, however, are not essential to the operation of the 1nvent10n I or a reduction to practice thereof in its broad concept.
In the modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. V it will be seen that instead of using the coiled spring 42, I have shown a rubber block 55, capable of being compressed and expanding, interposed between the movable member 35 and the horn 15. A

Iand IV. It is also evident from the two modifications] of my invention disclosed herein thatseveral other modifications and embodiments thereon may readily be made without departlng from the scope and spirit of the invention, consisting in a novel, simplified arrangement of punching element in a punching press for facilitating the production of articles in large quantities under efficient production methods.
I While I .have. described my invention in more orless detail and as being embodied in certain precise forms, I do not, therefore, desire or intend to be limited thereto, since as already stated, my invention contemplates broadly all proper changes as well as the omission of immaterial elements and the substitution and equivalents therefor, the making integral of certain parts shown herein as separate pieces, and other changes as circumstances may suggest or render expedient.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States and claim is:
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a die, a punch, a support extending between said die and punclr for holding an article in an inclined positlon between said die and said punch, and means for causing a relative movement between said die and punchto force the punch through the article and form an open ng therein at an. angle to a plane portion thereof.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a die, a punch, a support-extending between said die and punch for holding an article in an inclined position between said die and said punch, means for causing a relative movement between said ,die and punch to force said punch through the article and form an opening therethrough at tin angle to a plane portion thereof, and means to strip the article from said punch after the completion of said punching operation.
