CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed'itarch 6, 1917. Serial No. 152,620.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, HANS JUL Ns'EN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to centrifugal pumps and has for its object the provision of an improved pump of this nature which is so constructed that the use of a packing or stuffing box is entirely avoided: Apump of my design is particularly-valuablefin connection with installations of small size. In
pumps of this nature where'the power is small the great amount of power required in a stufiing box is entirely out of proportion to the amount of power consumed. In order to increase the efliciency of the pump it is necessary to do away with this loss in power at the stufling'box.
Furthermore, the pump of my design being of use for small installations will not receive the care and attention which the manipulation of stufling boxes ordinarily requires. My improved pump will operate without the usual attention necessary to maintain the stufiing boxes and prevent leakage, the construction of my pump being such that leakage is prevented by means other than stuffing boxes.
I will explain one form which my invention may take more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side view of a pump constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2; and
' Fig. 1 is a detail view of the rotating fan blade structure.
' My improved device consists of the housing 10 provided with a cover plate 11. The
N cover plate 11 has an extending sleeve 12 which supports the shaft 13 of the pump. This shaft besides being supported in the sleeve bearing 12 is also supported in the bearing 14 forming part of the housing 10. Holes 15 are provided in the housing 10 surrounding the bearing 14, through which holes the water the pump is to pump enters. A tubular extension 16 secured to the housing 10 is adapted to receive the pipe from the source of water supply. The housing 10 has a tangentially extending outlet 17 through which the water at increased pressure leaves the pump. The shaft 13 carries a fan blade structure 18 consisting of the hub 19 and fan blades 20. The'hub 19 has at'its right hand extremity (Fig. 2) a protruding annular portion 21 which is adapt- -'ed to be directly against the cover plate 11.
A suitable grease cup22 may be employed to provide lubrication for the inner annular opening 23 concentric with this extension 21. A suitable collar 24 abuts the extremity of the bearing sleeve 12 and a collar 25' is attached by set screw to the shaft 13. A spring 26 is interposed between the collars 24 and 25, thus at all times maintaining the shaft 13 in its farthermost right hand position (Fig. 2). The shaft 13 likewise is provided with a suitable coupling 27 for driving purposes.
The construction'thus explained it will be seen is adapted to draw the water in at the intake tube 16 and to impart a velocity to said water by reason of the rotation of the fan blades 20, this water being thrown outwardly and leaving the housing 10 through the outlet 17.
From what has been described it is thought the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art.
Having however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A centrifugal pump comprising a housing having a hollow cylindrical interior with its side wall rectangularly disposed to its end wall, a bearing provided in said end wall, inlet openings surrounding said bearing, a cover plate for said housing, a bearing provided in said cover plate, an outlet port in said side Wall, and said side wall flaring outwardly toward said port, a shaft mounted in said bearings and projecting outwardly from said first named bearing, a hub secured to the shaft within the housing, blades secured to said hub and projecting radially therefrom, an annular portion surrounding and projecting from the shaft and adapted In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe to bear against said cover plate to maintain I my name this 16th day of December, A. D. the blades out of contact With the cover 1916. i plate, an annular recess surrounding said HANS JULINSEN. shaft Within said annular portion and a Witnesses:
spring adapted to hold said annular portion HAZEL A. JONES,
