have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Detachable Trunk-Racks for the two hangers which can be permanently attached under the body where they will not be conspicuous.

My present invention constitutes a division of an application Serial No. 113,587, filed by me on the 5th day of August, 1916, for collapsible baggage carriers for automobiles.

My invention also comprises the various novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, which in their preferred embodiments only are hereinafter more particularly described by reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 illustrates my hanger appliance attached with. the folding trunk or carrier mounted thereon in collapsed position.

Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 1616 of Fig. 2.

l have illustrated my invention as applied to any standard type of automobile 1, having on each side near the top of its back brackets 2 forming the rear supports for the top.

I attach to the bottom of the car a pair of brackets 3 having perforated lugs 1 to receive screws or bolts by which the bracket is attached to the car and having spaced underhangin g ribs 5 between which at their outer end a cross web 6 carrying an upstanding threaded bolt '7. The bottom hanger members 8 have each an angled head 9 at one end which is adapted to be inserted between the webs 5 and to engage under their respective brackets while the body portions of the members 8 rest on the webs 6 and are perforated to permit the bolts 7 to pass up t irough and reveive a nut to secure the members 8 to the hangers. These members 8 are provided with reinforcing bottom rib 10 which is interrupted near its outer end to form a notch 11 opposite a bolt hole 12. This web terminates near the outer edge of the bolt hole 13 near the inner end of the bar, thus forming a notch adapted to fit on the seat 6 which will engage between the angled head 9 on one side and the shoulder formed by the inner end of the rib 10. The upper or supporting members 13 of the hanger are formed by metal straps having their lower ends inturned at is to form a bottom horizontal end, each of which has a Li-shaped seat 15 formed therein and adapted to receive the member 8 opposite the notch 11 and to be made fast thereto with the top edge of the ends 1 1 standing flush with the top of the members 8. In each seat 15 is provided a hole 12 registering with the hole 12 in the member 8. The main body portions of the straps 13 incline upwardly and toward. the brackets 2, and at their upper ends are given a quarter twist and bent over at 16 to form an apertured lug adapted to be passed over the threaded shanks of the brackets 2 and to be secured thereto by bolts 17. When the hanger members are assembled, as seen in Fig. 1, the members 8 and 1 1 form the bottom supports while the upright members 13 form side retaining members for the trunk 18 which is provided at each side with bolts .19 which tie it to the side members 13 near their upper ends and it is also provided in its extensible bottom section 20 with reinforcing straps 21 carrying bolts 22 adapted to pass down through the alining holes 12 and 12 and thus perform the double function of attaching the trunk and connecting the members 8 and 13. The bolts 19 remain permanently attached as long as the carrier is on the hanger.

My hanger attachments can be readily applied to and removed from the car and the trunk or carrier can be quickly and conveniently set in place and secured in the hangers and opened out to give its half or full capacity storage, in which positions t can be quickly secured by the bolts 22, it being noted that f secure the back of the trunk to the hanger straps l3 by bolts 19.

This invention is not intended to be restricted in scope to the specific embodiments shown, but contemplates such modifications as come within the spirit and scope of the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An apparatus of the character described comprising brackets made fast to the bottom of an automobile, brackets mounted at the end of the car body near the top thereof, hanger members connected to the upper brackets, compression members detachably connected to the bottom brackets and to the lower ends of the adjacent hanger member, and a trunk connected at its ends to the adjacent pair of hanger and compression members, substantially as described.

2. The combination with an automobile having top brackets and brackets connected to its bottom, of horizontal members detachably mounted in the bottom brackets, hanger members detachably suspended from the top brackets and each connected at its lower end to the outer end of the adjacent horizontal member, and a trunk adapted to rest on and to connect the horizontal members and means to connect each side of the trunk to the adjacent hanger member, sub-- stantially as described.

3. The combination with an automobile having top brackets and brackets connected. to its bottom, of horizontal members detachably mounted in the bottom brackets, hanger members detachably suspended from the top brackets and having their lower ends bent inwardly and connected to the outer ends of the horizontal members, and a collapsible trunk having a bottom which folds down and carries bolts adapted to engage and tie the ends of the hanger irons and the trunk to the horizontal members, substantially as described.

The combination with an automobile having top brackets and brackets connected to its bottom, of horizontal members detaehably mounted in the bottom brackets, hanger members detachably suspended from the top brackets and having their lower ends 5. In combination with an automobile having top side brackets and bottom brackets connected thereto and set nearer the center of the car than the top brackets, compression members detachably' interlocked with the bottom brackets, a tension member connected overhead to each top bracket and having its bottom end bent horizontally inwardly, detachable means to secure the lower inturned end of each tension member to the outer end of its adjacent compression member, a luggage carrier adapted to rest on the compression members and fit snugly between the tension members, and means to connect it to said latter members to tie the hangers at each side together.

6. An automobile trunk rack comprising disconnected trunk supporting frames at each side of the car, each frame comprising a bottom supporting member, a side hanger member, brackets on the car with which said members are detachably connected at their front ends, a trunk having end bolts serving to connect it to the side hanger members and to connect the said side hanger members together, and a common bolt adapted to connect the bottom of the trunk and the ends of the side hanger and bottom members together, substantially as described.

7. In a detachable trunk rack, trunk supporting members having near their forward ends a bottom notch and at their forward ends a countersunk top seat, brackets having an intermediate body portion adapted for attachment to the bottom of the car and having vertical spaced webs extending to the rear of the point of connection, the rear webs being connected by a cross member forming a depressed seat adapted to fit in said bottom notch of a trunk supporting member when the top seat thereof is in engagement with the undersurface of the bracket. and hanger members adapted to brace the outer ends of said supporting members, substantially as described.

8. In a detachable trunk rack, trunk supporting members having near their forward ends a bottom notch and at their forward ends a countersunk top seat, brackets comprising each a casting having side perforated ears and vertical depending webs extending to the front and rear of said ears, the rear webs being connected by depressed cross members adapted to fit into and interlock with the bottom notch in a trunk supporting member when the top countersunk seat of trunk supporting members, substantially as described.
