BROOM.
memos.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD J. BAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings;
My invention relates more particularly to the use of vegetable fiber and a construction for brooms in connection with the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a broom wherein vegetable fiber may be arranged in broom form and a coarser quality placed within, covered by a finer quality and the whole secured in compact and desirable manner. These objects, as well as other advantages, 1 accomplish by the con struction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof.
Figure I is an elevation of the broom with part of the outer fibrous material broken away.
Fig. II is an elevation showing the construction with the outer fibrous material and fastening omitted.
Fig. III is an edge elevation of the broom.
Fig. IV is a sectional view on the line IVIV of Fig. III.
Fig. V is a sectional view on the line VV in Fig. II.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the views. 1
The broom has a wooden head block 7 and a vertical opening 8 through the center thereof. A handle 9 extends at its lower end into the opening 8 and is secured there by the nails 10. A plate 11 is provided, with its sides upwardly bent to form a channel between them. The plate has a parallel series of openings 12 through the bottom thereof and is adapted to receive the head block 7 between its sides and to be secured upon the spreader by the rivets 13. Within the plate 11 a brush fiber holder 14 is placed. The holder has a parallel series of openings 15 through its upper part. Through these openings 15 wires 16 extend and pass through loops at the upper ends of coarse bended fiber bunches 17 to retain them securely within the holder. The fiber bunches extend from the holder downwardly through the plate openings 12. The upper surface of the brush engages the lower end of the head block and retains the brush in rigid po- Specification of Letters Patent.

sition between the head block and the plate. Over the spreader 7 and plate 11, on both sides thereof, fine fibrous material 18 is laid. The material 18 is brought together at the upper end about the handle 9 and just above the head block. The material 18 is secured at this position by means 19. This material extends downwardly in a manner to cover the entire outer surface of the coarse material 17 and is retained in that position by straps 20, secured about the broom, and the series of separators 21 extending through the straps and desired parts of the fiber wrapping.
' It will now be seen that the coarse fibrous material 17 is very securely held within the central part of the broom and the fine material is evenly spread over its outer surface. The object of the coarse fiber is for use in heavier sweeping, while that of the fine fiber is to cover the coarse and afiord an outer material which will not scratch or injure objects which are not capable of withstanding severe friction in sweeping them. The head block 7, the plate 11, and the method of securing the coarse fibrous material to the same are different from other known broom types. By practical demonstration with models I have found that the broom will not break or spring nor the fibers wear in a manner to distort or destroy the normal broom formation as shown, and which wearing or bending occurs in brooms of common type construction having broom corn therein, as well as substitutes therefor.
I claim In a broom, the combination of a'handle, a wooden head block rigidly secured thereon, a metal plate having its sides bent upwardly and secured to opposing surfaces of the head block, said plate being provided with a series of openings through its lower part, and a brush holder having coarse fibrous material in bunches of desired length secured therein, the bunches extending downwardly through the plate openings and the brush holder being placed and held in rigid position within the plate channel and between the plate and the head block when secured to each other, substantially as described.
