SPARK-PLUG.
Application filed May 8, 1917, Serial No. 167,208.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Ennnnsr A. WARNER,
a citizen of the UnitedA States,-residing at Beach, in the county of Golden Valley and State of North,l)akota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Plugs; and I do hereby declare the following to y, e a full, clear, and exact description of, t e invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and `figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v
The invention has reference to spark plugs for internal combustion engines, and particularly what are known as testing spark plugs. I
The primary object of the invention is to provide a spark plug oi this character which will enable the operatorto detect the inoperativeness of the plug, without the necessity of removing the same. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined spark plug and'intensifier.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the intensiiler points and consequently varying the distance of spark gap.
Referring now to the drawing, .Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through the spark plug. Fig, 2 is a detailed view oit' the inner shell and Fig. 3 is a nerspective view.
ln the drawing, the numeral 5 indi- V cates an outer shell carryingI the stationary electrode 7 and having a lower threaded portion 6 to permit the same. to be positioned within a threaded opening of an en gine cylinder.
in inner metallic shell 8 is spaced from the outer shell 5 by means of the spacing sleeve 9 threaded within shell 5. rlhis shell 8 is provided with openings 10, disposed diametrically opposite each other, and register with.' an opening .11, formed transversely through the core 12, positioned 4within the shell 8, and insulated therefrom by means of the tubular transparent insulating member 13, surrounding that portion of the core 1,2 which would otherwise come into Contact Specication of Letters Patent.

with the metallic shell 8, and at thesame time covering the opening 10 of the'shell 8.
Disposed centrally of the core 12 is a broken electrode comprising an upper threaded or adjustable section 14,' and a lower section l5, the lower end of vthe uppersection 14 .and the upper end of the lower section lying within the opening 11 of the central core 12, and in a position to' be viewed through the openings 10 of the shell 8. The lower end of thelower section 15 of the electrode lies in close proxiniity to electrode 7 to permit the Vusual sparking to take Y place therebetween. e
A threaded washer 16 is positioned on the threaded portion'ld of the broken electrode and insulated from shell 8 by means of insulating washers 17, and it will be seen that by screwing the threaded washer 16 into engagement with the shell 8', vertical movement of the section A14: is prevented.
In order that the upper portion 14 of the electrode may be adjusted, the upper end thereof is provided with a notch 19 to receive a screw-driver or other similar instrument. The ordinarybinding nut 20 is also positioned on thel upper threaded-section 14 to permit a cord terminal to be attached thereto.
F rom the foregoing, it will be seen that when electric current passes through the electrodes of the spark plug, a spark is necessarily formed between the sections 14 and 15,- Which spark not only intensifies the curplug, one end of the core having a reduced' portion terminating in a curved shoulder, said core having a longitudinalaperture yextending its entire length and intersectin a transverse opening therein, a shell litte over the core and resting upon a shoulder within said plug and its outer end inwardly curved and apertured, the portion above said aperture resting `upon the shoulder at the contracted end of the core, terminals fitted within the core end spaced apart at. the opening therein, a threaded screw upon one of the terminals adapted -to holdwthe seme in an adjusted pbsition, and an invterirljy and e'xteriorly threaded cylindrical nut holding the shell Within 'said plug.
In testimony 'whereof I hereunto aflix my presence' of two witnesses.
