Be it known that l, lANJrno KOBAYASHI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. Osakimachi, lharagun, Tokyo, J apan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in and Relating to Steel-Balliilaking `iviachines, of which the following is a specification.
ri'his invention relates to improvements in and relating to a steel ball making machine which spheres accurately the rough steel balls and it comprises a revolving disk which carry the rough balls and a pair of upper and lower rocking tables which rotate the rough balls, within said disk. rThe rough balls are inserted into the holes provided in the revolving disk and are sphered by the cutting edges of the disk bordering said hole during their revolution and rotation.
The annexed drawings illustrate a machine of construction of this invention, in which l1l igure l is a plan view, a part of the upper table is broken.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a side view, one part being a sectional view.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the rough balls and those parts inserting the balls.
In the drawings l designates a frame of the machine. Each of the upper longitudinal beams of the frame has a grooved way 2 on its inside face. A number of balls or rollers 3 are placed in the grooved way 2 together with suitable spacing pieces which prevent the accumulation of the balls or rollers 3 with each other.
4 is a lower rocking table and it rests upon the balls 3 in the way 2. The table 4 has a longitudinal slot 5, through which a vertical shaft 8 passes. The table 4 has a dovetail groove 6 in the lines of the sides of the slot and a guide rod 7 engages in the dovetail groove, by this means the rocking motion of the table 4 is guided.
The guide rod 7 has a circular hole at its middle point and the vertical shaft 8 passes through this hole. To the upper end of the shaft 8 a revolving disk 9 is fixed. The revolving disk 9 is provided with a number of apertures 10, the sides of said apertures forming cutting edges and the rough balls to be finished into an accurate sphere are inserted into each of these apertures 10.

volves, the disk 9 will give a revolution to the rough steel ball ll about the axis 8.
The disk 9 is supported by the supporting plate l2, mounted on the side beams of the frame, T he supporting plate l2 has a leg lli passing through the side beam and the leg l?) is supported by a spring arm 14, one end of which is fixed to the beam. By this means, the disk 9 may revolve smoothly without vibration.
An upper rocking table l5 is provided upon the revolving disk 9 and it rests upon the rough steel balls ll. Hence the rough balls are also inserted between the upper and the lower rocking tables.
At each end of the frame a pulley 1G is provided and the ends of the belts 1T, 18 are connected to the rocking tables 4, l5 by the screws 19. Thus, if one of the tables rocks, the other one will be rocked in the opposite direction.
The faces of the rocking tables are cov'- ered with le. ther or rubber plates 20, 2l by which the surfaces of the rocking tables contact with all the rough steel balls ll, although their sizes differ considerably.
A crank shaft 22 is provided at a suitable part of the frame l, and it is connected to the rocking table by means of the connecting rod 23 and the pivot 24. One end 23 of the rod 23 is forked so as to be pivoted to the both sides of the rocking table 4 and also to not interfere with the shaft 8.
A worm 25 is fixed to the crank shaft 22 and it engages with a worm wheel 27 on a shaft 26. The shaft 26 has a worm which engages with a worm wheel 29 fixed to the vertical shaft S.
By this construction, the driving pulley 30 will rock the rocking tables 4, 15 by means of the crank shaft 22 and the connecting rod 23 and it will also revolve the revolving disk 9 through the crank shaft 22, worms and worm wheels and the shaft 8 simultaneously. Thus the rough steel ball will be rotated by the rocking motion of the rocking tables and also it will be revolved by the revolution of the revolving disk 9. Du ing these motions, the rough ball will be sphered accurately by the cutting edge of the revolving disk 9 adjacent aperture 10 formed therein.
If the size of the ball to be finished differs greatly the space between the revolving disk and the lower rocking table must be adjusted. This purpose may be accomplished by changing the size of the balls or rollers 3 in the Way 2 or by lifting of the revolving disk 9 by any suitable means.
The above describes one construction embodying this invention and it must be understood that the construction may be modilied Without any change of the spirit of this invention.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of' my said invention, and in what manner the same is'to be performed, I declare that what I claim is l. A steel ball making machine, compris- V ing -a -disk adapted to revolve and Which carry the rough steel balls to be sphered andupper and lower rocking tables adapted to simultaneously rotate the rough steel balls substantially as set forth.
