LUG-STRAP CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
batented Apr. 13, 1920.
Appueation mea January e. 1920. serial no. 349,741.
To all ywhom. t may Concern Be it known that T, Louis DUnaND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lawrence, in the county of Esser; and State of vassaehusetts, have invented a new and improved Lug-Strap Connection, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descripi'zion.
'The invention relates to picking mechanis ns for looms, and its object is to provide a new and improved lug strap connection arranged to reinforce the picker stick with a view to increase the strength thereof and thus prevent the picker stick from breaking` when the loom is running. Another object to dispense with the usual loop for stirrup strap. Another objert is to permit of applying the lug strap connection to picker sticks oiinsuai construction and without requiring alteration thereof. Another obj ect is to permit of placing the lug strap connection in position on the picker stick or removing it therefrom whenever it is desired to do so and without requiring removal of the picker stick from the loom.
YVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and. then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A .practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved picker stick connection as applied;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same with parts broken out;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional plan View of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the guard for limiting the upward movement of the lug strap; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the reinforcing member for the picker stick.
The picker stick 10 of usual construction is reinforced on its outer face by a reinforcing member 11, preferably made of wood, and engaged by the lug strap 12 fastened by the usual bolt 13 to the sweep stick 14. The picker stick 10 extends through the lug strap 12 in the usual manner. The lower end of the reinforcing member 11 is provided With sidevvise extending integral lugs 2O covered on the top and the sides with a covering 21, preferably made of leather, and forming a saddle for the lug strap 12 to rest on, thus limiting the downward movement of the lug strap 12.
The upper end of the reinforcing member l1 is fastened to the picker stick 1t), and for this purpose use is made of a fastening devife arranged as follows: ri U-shaped clip 30 engages the inner face'and the sit-.es of the pi: er stick 10, and the sides of the clip f-O are provided with slots 31 forming guideways for lugs or projections formed on a nut 33 in which screws a screw 3jr. adapted to be locked in place on the uut 33 by a washer 35 and jam nut rThe inner end of the screw 34; abuts against the shank ai() of a guard 41 extending at an angle from the outer face of the reinforcing member 11 thus providing a stop for the upward movement of the lug strap 12. The shank 40 Atits into a recess 42 formed in the outer face of the reinforcing member 11, and the shank is provided with notches 43 for the passage of the sides of the clip 30 to securely hold the and the shank L() of the guard 4-1 against movement one relative to the other and to the reinforcing member 11. A washer l15 of leather or other similar material is interposed between the bend of the clip 30 and the inner face of the picker stick 10 to aid in holding the clip 30 against up or down movement on the picker stick 10. From the foregoing it will be seen that by the fastening device described the reinforcing member 11 is firmly held at its upper end in position on the picker stick 10, and the same fastening device serves to hold the guard 11 in position on the reinforcing member 11.
A pin 50 is arranged in an opening 51 in the reinforcing member 11 and the outer end of this pin abuts against the back of the shank 40, and the inner pointed end 51 of this pin engages a recess 52 formed in the outer face of the picker stick 10 thus providing a means for preventing accidental up and down movement of the reinforcing member 11 on the picker stick 10.
It is understood that by making the nut 33 adjustable on the clip 30 the fastening means can be readily applied to picker sticks 10 of different width.
By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be noticed that the lug strap 12 has free movement up and down between the saddle formed by the projections 2() and the covering 21 and the angular guard 41. It will further be noticed thatby the arrangement described the usual loop or stirrup strap is entirely dispensed with.
The lug strap connection shown and described can be readily applied to the picker stick l0 or removed therefrom without dis connecting the picker stick 10 from the loom.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A lug strap connection for picker sticks, comprising a reinforcing member fitting against the outer face of a picker stick and provided at the lower end with sidewise extending lugs forming a saddle, fastening means for attaching the upper end of the said reinforcing member to the picker stick, and a lug strap passing around the said reinforcing member' and limited in its downward movement by the said saddle.
2. A lug strap connection for picker sticks, comprising a reinforcing member fitting against the outer face of a picker stick and provided at the lower end with sidewise extending lugs forming a saddle, fastening means for attaching the upper end of the said reinforcing member to the picker stick, a lug strap passing around the said reinforcing member and limited in its downward movement by the said saddle, and a guard held on the outer face of the upper portion of the said reinforcing member to limit the upward movement of the said lug strap, the said fastening means fastening tjhe guard in place on the reinforcing mem- 3. In a lug strap connection for picker sticks, the combination of a picker stick, a lug strap through which the picker stick passes, a reinforcing member fitting against the outer face of the said picker stick and provided at its lower end with integral sidewise extending lugs having a covering to provide a saddle, a clip engaging the inner face and sides of the picker stick, a nut held on the said clip, and a screw screwing in the nut and bearing against the said reinforcing member.
4;. In a lug strap connection for picker sticks, the combination of a picker stick, a lug strap through which the picker stick passes, a reinforcing member tting against the outer face of the said picker stick and provided at its lower end with integral sidewise extending lugs having a covering to provide a saddle, a clip engaging the inner face and sides of the picker stick and provided with guideways, a nut having lugs slidingly engaging the said guideways, a screw screwing in the said nut, and a guard for the lug strap and held on the outer face of the said reinforcing member, the said guard having a shank engaged by the screw to fasten the reinforcing member to the picker stick and to fasten the said guard to the reinforcing member.
