CORE-PLATE FOR DRYING CORES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 13, 1920.

Qhioihave mvented a new and useful Core- Pliite for Drying Cores, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to core plates for inolders cores, such plates being used for drying or bakin the cores after they have finished core, which is gen erally made of sand and adhesive material,
being placed upon the core plate-and then put in an oven to be dried or baked.
The usual construction of core plate comprises a sheet iron plate having angle irons attached to its under surface around its four ed es for strengthening purposes.
wing to the excessive heat to which these plates are subjected they soon warp away from the angle iron reinforcing members, this warping generally occurring longitudinally of the plate. As a great many of the cores which are used in molding are slender and delicate this warping of the core plate will cause the cores drying or: baking thereon to become warped and distorted in shape if not entirely ruined.
The objects of the invention are to provide a core plate which will not warp under excessive heat, thereby obviatingthe injury to delicate cores which is common with core plates of the usual construction; and to generally improve and simplify the construction of core plates.
lhe objects of the invention may be attained by bending the edges of the core plate downwardly at right angles forming integral strengthening flanges which prevent the plate from warping.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understoodthat various changes in the form, proportions,.size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated .in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the upper face of a core plate embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 a perspective view of the under face of the core plate.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section through one end of a modified form of core plate.
A practical embodiment of the" invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The core plate is illustrated in the drawings comprising a rectangular sheet'metal p1ate'1- preferably having rows of spaced apertures 2 provided therein for the purpose ofspeeding the drying of the core.
As the tendency of the plate to warp is mainly longitudinally of the plate, the side edges of the plate are shown turned down at right angles forming strengthening flanges 3 along the side edges of the plate. These flanges are preferably beveled at their ends as shown at 4 in order to allow for their being easily handled and to give a finished appearance to the core plates.
Although it will be understood that the end edges of the plate may be bent downwardly forming flanges, the style of plate illustrated shows reinforcing angle irons 5 connected upon the under side of the plate near the ends thereof by means of rivets 6 or .their equivalents. As a further means for reinforcing thecore plate an angle iron 7 is connected to the under surface of the plate and is disposed diagonally across the plate.
It will be seen that the integral flanges 3 will prevent warping of the core plate from the heat of the drying or baking oven as the flanges 3 will not bend transversely and since they are formed integral with the plate there can be no warping of the plate away from the flanges.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modified form of core plate in which the ends of the plate are reinforced with integral down turned flanges. in this form of core plate the plate is formed of the metal sheet 1 provided with the down-turned integral flanges along its longitudinal edges and the ends of the plate are bent under and back as shown at 8 and spot welded or otherwise connected to the under surface of the plate and provided with the down-turned integral flanges 9 which take the place of the angle irons shown in Fig. 2. By thus forming the core late the strengthening flanges are formed integral with the body of the plate andthe portion 8 allows for a hand hold for moving the core plate.
Although the drawings and above specification disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I do not desire to be limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention, many changes in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience su gests without departing from the spirit of t e invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A core-plate formed of a rectangular sheet of metal provided with integral downturned flanges upon two opposite edges, a relnforclng diagonally dlsposed member connected to its under surface and reinforcing means provided upon its under surface near the other two edges.
2. A core plate formed. of sheet metal provided with integral down-turned flanges upon its longitudinal edges and a reinforcing diagonally disposed member connected to its under surface.
3. A core plate formed of sheet metal and provided withintegral down-turned flanges upon opposite edges and reinforcing means provided upon the under surface near the other two edges, said down-turned flanges being at least as high as said reinforcing means.
4. A 'core plate formed of sheet metal and provided with integral down-turned flanges upon two opposite edges and reinforcing means provided upon the under surface, said down-turned flanges being higher than said reinforcing means.
5. A core plate formed of a rectangular sheet of metal provided with integral downturned flanges upon two opposite edges, a reinforcing means provided upon its under surface near the other two edges and reinforcing means extending between said first named reinforcing means. I
