Be it known that 1, Jon S. Mxox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Calipatria, in the county of Imperial and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVagon-Reaches, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make an improved wagon reach, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon provided with a reach in accordance with the principles of my invention the view being taken looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional detail on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. t is a rear elevation of t 1e rocker as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 4: in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view 'llustrating the operation of turning the wagon and bending the reach upon the secondary king .bolt.
The front reach member 1 has a notch crosswise of its lower face and the front axle 2 fits in the notch. The front reach member 1 has a notch in its upper face and the front bolster 3 fits in the upper notch, so that when the bolster 3 is secured to the axle 2 the member 1 is rigidly held. The front axle hounds 4 and 5 fit across the front axle 2 and are held in place by the front bolster 3, said hounds being inclined relative to a longitudinal line. The tongue 6 is mounted between the forward ends of the hounds 1 and 5 and the hounds 4; and extend a considerable distance backwardly from the axle 2.
The rocker 7 fits upon the front bolster 3 and the king bolt 8 is inserted downwardly through the rocker 7, through the front bolster 3, through the front reach member 1 and through the front axle 2. The rear portion of the front reach memher 1 is cut away on its top and bottom to make a guide tongue 9.
The rear reach members 10 and 11 fit against the upper and lower faces of the tongue 9. Straps 12 and 13 are secured-to the top and bottom of the body portion of the front reach member and extend back- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly on top of and below the rear reach members 10 and 11. A secondary king bolt llis inserted downwardly through the strap 12, through the rear reach member 10, through the tongue 9, through the rear reach member 11 and through the strap 13 and is held in place by a cotter 15.
The slider 16 connects the rear ends of the hounds 4 and 5 and the rear end of the tongue 9 and passes between the rear reach members 10 and 11. A spacing block 17 is placed between the rear reach members 10 and 11 behind the slider 16 and a U-clip 13 is inserted downwardly straddle of the members 10 and 11. through the ends of the block 17 and through a washer plate 19, and nuts 20 are applied to the clip below the washer plate 19 so as to hold the members 10 and 11 rigidly together at their central portions. The extreme rear end 21 of the member 10 slides between the rear axle 22 and the rear bolster 23.
The rear end of the member 11 is spaced from the member 10 by a block 2%. A U- clip 25 is inserted downwardly straddle of the member 10 through the ends of the block 24.- straddle of the member 11 and through a washer plate 26, and nuts 27 are applied to the lower ends of the clip 25 against the washer plate 26.
A series of pinholes is formed through the member 10 so that the pin may be removed from one hole and the rear axle moved forwardly or backwardly and the pin reinserted through the desired hole 3d to nst the length of the reach.
The secondary king bolt 14 is some distance behind the front axle 2 and makes it possible to turn the axle 2 almost to a right angle to the rear axle 22. Rollers 35 and 36 are mounted upon the rocker 7 at its ends to support the load and allow the load to move forwardly and backwardly upon the rocker as required in making a turn. Obviously the distance between the front axle 2 and the rear axle 22 is constantly changing as turns are made.
Among the advantages of this construction are the facilities for making short turns, the double construction produced by the rear reach members 10 and 11 spaced apart by the blocks 17 and 24: and secured together by the clips 18 and 25, and the slider 16 operating between the reach members 10 and 11.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A wagon reach construction comprising a front reach member fixed to the front axle and having a tongue extending backwardly, a slider connecting the rear ends of the front hounds and the rear end of the tongue, rear reach members fitting above and below the tongue and slider, a pin connecting the forward ends of the rear reach members to the forward end of the tongue, spacing blocks between the rear reach members, and means for securing the rear reach members to the spacing blocks.
2. A wagon reach construction comprising a front axle, a front reach member notched on top and bottom and fitting the front axle, a front bolster fitting in the upper notch and secured to the front axle, the rear end of the front reach member forming a guide tongue extending backwardly, front hounds fixed between the front axle and the front bolster and extending backwardly, a slider connecting the rear ends of the front hounds and the rear end of the tongue, rear reach members fitting above and below the tongue and slider, a secondary king bolt connecting the front ends of the rear reach members to the front end of the guide tongue, spacing blocks between the rear reach members back of the slider, means for holding the rear reach members to the spacing blocks, rear hounds.
