TONGUE CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
T0 all 1v/ioni #may concern.
i Be it known that I, BENNIE P. HANSON, a 'citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county ot' Jones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Tongue Construction;A and I do herebydeclare the following 'i t'o be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
` This invention relates to improvements in tongue construction for Wagons and trucks,
and particularly to the tongue-hound.
Myobject ais to furnish a tongue-hound which is of light and durable construction and one that can be adjusted to meet the requirements of any running gear construction.
In the drawings herewith which are made a part of this application, Figure l is a plan View of one of my Wagontongues and hound. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the lines 2-2 of Fig. l'. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 3*-3 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are Views showing varied forms of openings in the adjusting bars, and Fig. G is a plan view of a wagon tongue and hound of varied and lighter construction.
In the specific description of the drawing numerals will be used to indicate the various arts and the same numeral will be used to indicate the same part throughout the various views of the drawing.
My invention comprises a tongue 4 and the tongue-hound which latter comprises a, plurality of bolts and bars more fully de* scribed hereinafter.
The hound comprises two convergent members' and 5, cach of said members having two adjusting bars 6 and 6a secured thereto in any preferred manner or they may be made integral therewith, the said adjusting bars 6 and 6 having a plurality of perforations. or a continuous slot as prcferi'ed. rl`he said bars are positioned on the said members 5 and 5 so that they extend inwardly in a line parallel with the plane -of the axle of the iji'agon and to an extent eolual to approximately one third of the distance between the two members 5 and 5, thus providing a space between the ends of the said bars G and iu which the tongue 1S j iositiouen.
v On the tongue f1 adjacent the point 7 bear-` `mg the doubletree, a plate S having the,
shape of an ,isoseeles triangle is secured with the longest point 9 of the triangle on the tongue, the other points 10 and l1 extending on either side thereof. The forward end including the point 9 is shaped to conform to the shape of the tongue, the rear portion being left fiat to furnish a proper bearing for the double tree.
A plate 13 of the same shape as the plate 8 is secured to the under side of the tongue immediately below and registering with the plate 8, the said plate 13 being shaped to lit the underside of the tongue and embrace it snugly throughout the length of the said plate 13 when in its operative position.
Attached to the points l0 and 11 by the bolts 12 are the members 14 and 1-'l. The said members 14: and 14 each comprise two parallel bars 15 and 16 of equal dimensions, held in spaced relation by the bars (3 and (3 to which the members 14 and 1li are re-` A corners of the triangular plates to provide means for adjustment at those points. Upon the upper 'surface of the bar 16 an eye 19 is secured to receive the draft bolt 20 which passes through openings in the members 5 and 5, and also through an opening in the tongue, all of said openings and the said eyes registering with openings in the front hound of the wagon through which the said draft holt also passes to connect the tongue to the wagon.
Supporting the rear end of the tongue is a bracket comprising two bars, one of said bars 2l being formed to snugly' embrace the surface of the upper portion of said tongue and the ends thereof extending laterally to rest upon thc bars 15 of the members 1l and l-l-l, said bar Q1 having a plurality of openings through the ends thereof. A duplicate QQ of said bar Q1 is positioned underV the end of the tongue, the said bars being held in spaced relation by the members 14 and 11 to which the said bars arc removably attached bythe bolts 23, andv theauxiliary bolts 24 further aidlin securing the bars 2l and 22 about the end of the tongue.
f "igf illustrates a tongue hound of'lighter' easily, adjusted tongue-hound j is provided;
-one that may be carried in stock by dealers i hound of any make or'siz'e of Wagon.
and adjusted to-the spread of the front -jdesire it to be ui-iderstood that I Wish to comprehend in 4this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes which may be considered' as falling fairly Withi the scope of my invention.' y
Believifg that the-` construction, ladvantagesvan'd operation of my invention ,have
thus beenl'made clearly apparent further description is deemed unnecessary.
,Havingthus fully described my inven- ,tion .what I desire `to secure by Letters' .Patent-iS; f
1 A Wagon tongue-hound, comprising ay 'pair of triangular plates; a pair: of convergaat bars having adjusting bars attached thereto and a plurality of! openings through :said adjusting bars; a bracket havingV 1atterally extending ends, said ends having a pl'urality of openings therethrough; 'two pairs of parallel bars, removably connected to said .pair of plates and to the said bracket and the said adjusting bars, and a draft bolt, Where`4 by the various parts of the tongue hound are .connected with each. other and also Withthe front hound of "a Wagon.
2. ,The combination with a Wagon tongue, of la`tongue-houndcomprisinga pair of Atriangular plates attached to the upper and under surfaces of the said tongue; a pair of convergent bars; a plurality of adjustment l`.bars having a plurality of openings therethrough,* said adjustment bars being kconnected to said convergent'bars; two pairs of parallely 'bars held in spacedrelation'by the said adjustment bars, each pair of said bars havingu an eye secured thereon; a bracket embracing the rear end of the saidtongue, the ends of lthe bars' comprising said bracket being held in spaced relation by the pairs of parallel bars, and the said ends of the bars having a through.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the'presenceof. two subscribing Witnesses.
