Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 31, 1919. Serial No. 286,616.
To all whom it may concern,-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. KISSINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gold-Chisels, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a cold chisel and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Specifically an object of my invention is to make a cold chisel having a detachable yielding handle, so as to form a shock al sorber between the chisel and the handle, and so that the chisel head may be readily removed.
Figure l is a side elevation of a cold chisel embodying the principles of my invention, a part of the handle being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a front end elevation looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 3 in Fig. 1.

A cold chisel is forged from suitable steel and comprises a body 1, a striking head 2, and a cutting bit 3.
The body 1 is rectangular in cross section and has grooves 1 and 5 formed in its side faces, and seats 6 and 7 formed in its front end faces in line with the grooves 4c and 5, and a seat 8 at the center of its rear face in the horizontal plane with the grooves 4 and 5.
A brace bar 9 fits in the head 8 at one end and has a head upon the other end, forming a spring seat 10. Supporting and gripping arms 11 and 12 fit in the grooves 4 and 5 and have bends 13 and 1 1 fitting in the seats 6 and 7 in opposition to the brace bar 9. The supporting and gripping arms 11 and 12 are bent inwardly to form the extension arms 15 and 16, and the extension arms 15 and 16 are connected by a cross piece 17.
The parts 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 are all formed integral of a single piece of suitable strap iron or steel.
An expansion coil spring 18 fits upon the extension arms 15 and 16 against the spring seat 10. A shank 19 has arms 20 and 21 forming a slot 22 in which the cross bar 17 slides loosely, and bends 23 and 24; extending into the space 25 between the extension arms 15 and 16. The shank 19 fits in the handle 26 and a spring seat 27 is formed in the forward end of the handle to receive one end of the spring 18.
A ferrule 28 is fixed upon the handle 26, a pin 29 is removably inserted through the ferrule through the space 25 through the arms 20 and 21 to resist the tension of the spring 18. The forward end of the spring 18 forms a ring which draws the supporting and gripping arms 11 and 12 together to hold the bars in engagement with the body 1 and the spring presses the brace bar 9 against the body 1 to press the body 1 against the bends 13 and 14.
When the pin 29 is removed the extension arms 15 and 16 may be drawn out of the spring 18 until the bends 23 and 2d strike the cross bar 17, and this will release the brace bar 9 and allow the body 1 to unhook from the bends 13 and 14 and allow the supporting and gripping arms 11 and 12 to spread apart to release the body 1, then the body 1 may be refinished and sharpened and replaced, or a new tool substituted, then the parts are reassembled, pressed into the spring, and the pin 29 applied.
It is obvious that various forms of hammer heads and other tools may be substituted for the cutting tool.
Thus I have produced a cold chisel or the like having a quick detachable handle forming a shock absorbing conne tion between the head and the handle, the handle being more or less flexibly connected to the head.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A cold chisel and the like, comprising a head having proper seats in its front face for holding arms, a handle, holding arms connecting with the handle and seating in the arm seats of the head, a coil spring carried on the holding arms and a brace fitted against the rear face of the head and hearing upon the spring in such a manner that the pressure of the spring opposes the hold of the arms seated upon the head.
