The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood, from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a 000king utensil constructed according to the proent invention.

Referring to this drawing, 10 designates a base plate, which is preferably stamped from a sheet of metal, and has its outer marginal edges turned down to provide a marginal supporting flange, and which is provided with relatively large central opening of angular configuration.

The base plate 10 supports a plurality of sides 11 preferably constructed from sheet metal, and which are held to the base plate by tongues 12 engaging through slits or apertures in the base plate, and overturned against the under side of the same. The upper ends of the sides 11 are bent inwardly at substantially right angles to the plane of the sides 11, and are adapted to abut at their lateral edges to form a closed I top for the device. The sides 11 are perforated or otherwise suitably formed for directing heat rising through the body outwar ly through the sides l1. The top, designated. generally as 13, is provided with a central aperture, the marginal edge of which is spacedinwardly from the sides 11, and a preferably sheet metal receptacle 14: is fitted downwardly through the opening in the top, and into the body. The receptacle 1 is closed at its lower end, and said end lies substantially in the plane or the base plate 10.

The tongues 15 engage against the outer surface of the receptacle .4-, and have their upper ends bent to form loops 10 which extend inwardly toward one anotaer, and which engage through slits 17. formed in the sides of the receptacle 14 adjacent to the upper edge of the same. The tongues or straps 15 are relatively narrow, and. are of sufficient rigidity to support the receptacle l l in suspended relation to the body.

Each side 11 is provided with a rack or rest, and each rack or rest comprises a pair of rods or bars 18 preferably formed from lengths of wire outturned at their lower ends to form ledges 19 and being upturned at their outer extremities to form retaining fingers 20. The upper ends of the rods 18 are bent inwardly, and engage against the top 13, with the inner ends of the rods 18 projecting through the top 13 and being overturned a ainst the inner sides thereof. A tie rod EZl encircles the lower portion oi the body and is provided at suitable points with loops or eyes 22, engaging about the lower portions of the bars or rods 18 to hold the latter in suitably spaced-apart relation. T he tie rod 21 i bent diagonally at the corner portions of the body and is adapted to rest a ainst said corner portions to space the intel-mediate parts of the tie rod 21 from the sides 11, and to hold the lower portions of the rods 18 in outwardly spaced relation from the sides. The upper inturned ends of the rods 18 are of corresponding length to position the rods in substantially parallelism with the adj scent sides 11, and in spaced relation thereto. The diagonal portions 28 of the tie rod are of sufiicient length to retain the intermediate portions of the tie rod in the desired spaced relation from the adjacent sides 11. The body portion of the device tapers upwardly, and the tie rod 21 fits downwardly over the body portion and binds upon the enlarged lower end thereof. The tie rod 21 is thus held from slipping downwardly about the body, and retains the rest bars 18 rigid and in suitably spacedapart relation with respect to each other and to the adjacent sides 11.

In use, the base plate 10 is placed over the burner of a stove or the like, and the heat rising from the burner passes upwardly into the body about the receptacle 1a. The heat collects in the upper portion of the re ceptacle and passes through the perforations in the sides l1, and is retained to a large extent about the receptacle, thus insuring the rapid heating and cooking of any substance placed in the receptacle. Slices of bread, or the like, are placed upon the racks, and their lower ends engage the ledges 19 while the fingers 20 hold the slices from slipping outwardly from the ledges, thus insuring the retention of the bread upon the racks. The heat which passes through the perforations of the sides ll toasts the slices of bread, and thus the single burner or source of heat may be utilized for performing both functions.

It is of course understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention, without departing from the spirit thereof, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a base plat-e having a relatively large central opening, a body part mounted on the base plate, and extending upwardly therefrom and provided with an opening in its top and perforations in its sides, racks supported exteriorly upon the body, and a receptacle suspended in said opening of the body and projecting downwardly therethrough.

2. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of an upwardly tapering body portion having an opening in its top and perforations in its sides, pairs of bars arranged against the outer sides of the body and provided with upwardly and outwardly turned hooks at their lower ends, a tie bar extending about the body and having loops formed throughout the length thereof engaging said bars to hold the latter in spacedapart relation, the upper ends of said rods being turned inwardly and secured to the top of the body part, and a receptacle suspended through said opening in the body.

3. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a base plate having a central opening therein, a plurality of side portions 1,33e,aes

extending upwardly from the base plate at the marginal edge of said opening, and having their upper ends bent inwardly to form a top, said inwardly bent ends bein pro-- vided with upstanding tongues, racxs arranged exteriorly about the body, and a receptacle engaging through the top of the body and havin openings in its sides adj acent its upper 7 end, said tongues being adapted to be looped through said openings for suspending the receptacle in the body.

4. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a hollow body provided with an opening in its top and having upstanding tongues about the marginal edge of the opening, a plurality of racks arranged exteriorly about the body, and a receptacle engaging through said opening, and having openings in its sides adjacent its upper end for the reception of said tongues therethrough for suspending the receptacle in the body.

5. An article of the character described including the combination of a polygonal body, a plurality of rods secured at their upper ends to the upper end of the body and extending downwardly in spaced relation to the sides of the body, an encircling tie rod engaging about the body and having spaced loops throughout its length adapted to receive the lower portions of said rods therethrough, for holding the rods in spaced relation, said tie rod extending diagonally across the corners of the body to space the intermediate portions of the tie rod therefrom, and hold the downwardly extending rods in spaced relation from the adjacent sides of the body.

6. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a hollow body having an opening in its top and perforations in its sides, toast racks arranged exteriorly of the body, and a receptacle extending through said opening in the top of the body and projecting at its lower end into substantially the plane of the lower, end of the body to facilitate heating of the receptacle and for deflecting heat about the receptacle through the perforations to the toast racks.

7. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a base plate having a relatively large central opening, a body part mounted on the base plate and extending upwardly therefrom and provided with an opening in its top and perforations in its sides, racks supported exteriorly upon the body, means for maintaining said rack in definite spaced relation from said perforated sides, and a receptacle suspended in said opening of the body and projecting downwardly therethrough.

8. in a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a body part, provided with an opening in its top and perforations in its sides, racks supported exteriorly upon the lll body, means removably engaging said body to n'laintain said rack in definite spaced relation to said perforated sides, and against lateral displacement, and a receptacle sus pended in the opening in the top of Said body and projecting downwardly them-- through.

9. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a hollow body having an opening in its top and perforations in its side walls, racks arranged exteriorly about the body to hold material to be toasted, a rod encircling said body and having angularly disposed corner portions engaging the corners oil the body to hold the portions oi the rod intermediate its corner portions spacer from the body, said rod engaging said racks to hold them spaced from the side walls of the body.

10. In a combined toaster and boiler, the COl'l'lblIlfltlOIl of a hollow body having an opening in its top, and perforations in its side walls, racks arranged exteriorly about the body to hold material to be toasted, a rod encircling said body and having angularly disposed corner portions engaging the corners of the body to hold the portions of the rod intermediate its corner portions spaced from the body, said rod engaging said racks to hold them spaced from the side walls of the body, and a receptacle suspended through the opening in the top of said body for heating the receptacle and deflecting heat through the pefora-tions to the material on the rack.

11. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a hollow body having perforations in its side walls, racks arranged eXteriorly about the body to hold material to be toasted, a rod encircling said body and having angularly disposed corner port-ions engaging the corners of the body to hold the portions of the rod intermediate its corner portions spaced from the body, said rod engaging said racks to hold them spaced from the side walls of the body and means connecting said encircling rod to said racks to prevent lateral displacement of the racks. 12. In a combined toaster and boiler, the combination of a hollow body provided with an opening in its top and having upstanding tongues about the marginal edge of the openings, a receptacle engaging through said opening and having openings in its sides adjacent its upper end, said tongues engaging through said opening and bent back to engage over the top edge of the receptacle for suspending the receptacle in the body.
