COMBINED UMBRELLA STAND AND PEDESTAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed August 10, 1917. Serial No. 185,543.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. STAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pompeys Pillar, in the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Umbrella Stands and Pedestals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined umbrella stand and pedestal and the object is to provide a device which may be employed for receiving umbrellas to be dried, and which may also be employed for storing umbrellas when not in use.
A further object is to provide a deviceof the character indicated useful as an article of furniture and which may be employed as a pedestal.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cover open, and the umbrella supporting arms in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a portion of one of the grooved strips, these strips receiving the'slidable arms for directly sup porting the umbrella.
This device includes a base portion 10 having mounted thereon a standard 12 comprising a plurality of side members 13 fitted together and forming a tapering member constituting the umbrella stand proper. A molding 14 may be provided above the base and around the side members 13. The upper transverse member 16 is of suitable size to give the device as a whole an artistic appearance and this member constitutes a cover which is hinged at 17 and which may be raised when umbrellas already in a dry condition, are to be stored within the device being located as shown, and serving to.
mount and support the cover and to support the arms when the latter are open or extended.
A. plurality of arms 20 are mounted for slidable movement within the grooved strips 21 located as shown, the strips being notched at 22.
The groove and notch of each strip being of the relative size illustrated in Fig. 3, the headed ends of the arms 20 are prevented from accidental displacement from the grooves. In the use of the device for drying umbrellas, the arms 20 are drawn upwardly and outwardly, the handle of the umbrella being received within the pedestal proper. After the drying operation the arms are moved inwardly and downwardly, the umbrella is closed and placed within the pedestal, the top or coverof the latter then being closed.
That is claimed is:
An article of furniture comprising a standard forming a storage receptacle, :1 flat base portion, a cover for the receptacle, occupying a horizontal position when closed, a molding surrounding the upper edges of the walls of the receptacle, means for hinging the cover to the molding, grooved guiding strips within the standard and adjacent to the walls thereof, and a plurality of umbrella supporting arms movable vertically within the grooves of the strips, and upwardly and outwardly with reference to the standard, to an approximately horizontal operative position, the molding supporting the arms when extended, and supporting the cover when the latter is closed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HENRY CARL STAHL.
