Speaking-Tubes.
NO. 33,610. Patented Dec.3,872.
gfnwgsgg Inventors UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK A. WILL AND JULIUS CK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPEAKING-TUBES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,610, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDERICK A. WILL and JULlUs FIN 0K, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a Trap for Speaking-Tubes; and we do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains tO make and use our said invention or improvements Without further invention or experiment.
Our invention relates to an improved arrangement of the tubes known as speakingtubes, which are employed as a medium for enabling persons in different parts of a house to converse with each other.
It is often the case where these tubes are employed for communicating between an upper and a lower story that foreign substances, such as paper and like articles, will, by some means, get into the upper end and lodge at some point, so as to render the tube useless. Our invention is designed to prevent these obstruct-ions from getting into the tube.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain our invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A represents a section of a speaking-tube such as is used as a medium for conversing between two rooms of a house. At the upper end oi' this tube we employ a brass tube, B, which we call a trap, for connecting the tube A with the mouthpiece. This trap consists ot a short horizontal section ot' pipe, B, to one and is then bent to the shape of an inverted U, in the manner of forming the Ordinary sink trap, and the extremity is connected with the upper end of the speakingtube. For conven ience in securing the trap in place in the wall we cast lugs e upon it at suitable points, when it is cast in one piece, and make holes through them through which screws may be inserted so as to readily and securely fasten it to one of the posts or studdin g. When this trap is used any bits ot' paper or other substance which would obstruct the passage, which may be inserted through the mouth-piece by children or Otherwise, cannot pass further than the bend in the trap, from which place it can be readily re moved with a hook.
By means of this simple device speakingtubes can be completely protected from being choked with Obstructions, thus avoiding the necessity of frequently removing the tubes, and the consequent injury to the walls in Order to clear them.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The trap, consisting of the inverted U- shaped tube B, in combination with the tube A, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
ln witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals.
