Be it known that l Josnri-r A. S. SIMONE, of the United Itates of America, residing' at lnwood, in the lcounty of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Adjustable iWindow-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
rihe primary object of the invention is the provision of a screen for windows and siniilar openings, readily positioned and reinoved, when desired, and automatically retained when in use, the structure possessing great strength, and being' easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extensible window screen in a unitaryT structure serviceable in openings of varying widtns and automatically retained in operative position when in use.
still further object of the invention is to provide a window screen readily fitted entensibly into a window having no portions liable to'becoine disassembled, the device being manually contraetible and autoinatically extensible for self-maintenance in the window until the removal thereof is desired V Y With these general objects in view the invention consists of the novel forni, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter inore fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.

Referring inore in detail to the drawing, my invention comprises a rectangular fraine composed of substantially U-shaped sections and 11 with the sides 12 and 13 thereof. respectively, in telescoping' relations. rhe said sides 12 and 13 as well as the ends or cross pieces 1i and 15. of the sections 10 and 11., respectively, are preferably formed of sheet metal covered wood, as illustrated Specification of Letters Eatent.

Helical springs 29 are connected between the opposite ends of the cross members 14. and 15 being' positioned in bores 8O and 31 of the sides 1Q, and 13 respectively. A guide rod is provided in each bore 31 within the springs 29 Twith their corresponding ends secured or doweled as at 33 in the opposite ends of the. cross piece 15. rEhe coniplete operation of the invention will be fully understood frein this detailed description thereof, the springs 29 tending to force the Vtions 10 and 11 apart with the screen 2O exposed to its fullest extent and the flange 28 at the liinit of its movement toward the end 15 of the fraine.
liVhen desiring to place the invention into a window, the ends 1s of the franie and the flange of the plate 25., are grasped by the operator and ino'ved toward each other, for decreasing` the size of the frame, sufticient for insertion and upon releasing' the 28 the spri E29 extend the sections 10 and 11 for engabing the ends 111 and 15 with the sides of the window sash. and retaining the inifention in the window. This ina-nner of mounting the screen 20 renders the edges thereof insect-tight so that flies and mosquitoes cannot pass through the frame when in use.
The embodiment of the invention herein illustrated and described is believed t'o be preferable7 but it will be understood that the sections 10 and 1l may have their sides of different form, so long as they are 'freely telescopingly movable, other minor changes being also permissible, without departing Vfrom the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A. window screen comprising U-shaped rame sections, telescopingly connected together, a roller journaled in one of said sections at one end of the frame, a slide plate in said section adjacent the roller-,a screen anchored in the other section, at the opposite end oi' the frame, and passing over said roller with its other end secured to said plate, and expansion springs tensioned between the said sections adapted for normally maintaining the frame extended.
2. A window screen comprising U-shaped frame sections, telescopingly connected together, a roller journaled in one of said sections at one end of the frame, a slide plate in said section adjacent the roller, a screen anchored in the other section, at the opposite end of the frame, and passing over said rollerV with its other end secured to said plate, the sides of said sections having axially alining bores, expansion springs in said bores, connected tothe opposite ends of the sections, and a guide rod for each of said springscarried by one of said sections.

A window screen comprising U-shaped sections having their sides telescopingly connected together, one Within the other, the inclosingi sides having slots and the inclosed sides having grooves corresponding with said slots, a roller journaled in the end of the inclosing side, a screen anchored at one end to the cross end of the section having the inclosed sides, the said screen extending through said grooves and slots, and passing over said roller, the sides of said sections having corresponding grooves therein, a slide plate attached to the screen adjacent said roller, with ends slidably mounted in the grooves of the roller carrying section, and expansion springs tensioned between said sections adapted to automatically eX- tend the frame, upon the relative separating movement oli the sections thereof.

A device of the class described comprising a rectangular frame formed of eX- tensible sections, automatic means adapted for extending said sections7 a roller journaled within the end of one section, a plate slidably Carried by said last named section, movable toward and from said roller, and a screen having one end secured t0 said plate and passing over said roller with the other end of the screen anchored to the section at the opposite end of the frame.
5. A window screen comprising sections telescopingly connected together composed of metal-covered wood, a roller journaled in one section7 a screen having one end anchored in the other section and passing over said roller, adjusting means for the frame, secured to the free end of the screen, and projecting means resiliently positioned between said sections adapted to automatically extend the frame when in use.
