LILLIAN GLASER, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Gas-MANTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6,V 1920.
Application led October 11, 1917. Serial No. 196,064.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LILLIAN GLAsER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Gas- Mantles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.'
In the preparation of self lighting incandescent mantles for burners and gas jets it is diicult to maintain the catalytic matter upon' the mantle as it is not cohesive and is frequently shaken off while the mantle is being transported, or if itis subject t0 vibration when in use.
This invention relates to a self lighting mantle in which the catalytic material is fused directly to the fabric'of the mantle in 'such manner as to withstand rough usage in transportation and in service and at the v saine time to distribute the heat effectively for igniting purposes.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth 'and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The drawing is a. view in elevation of a an y A r. n n mantle embodying features or the invention.
Spots l or buttons molded of equal parts of platinum black and silicious material, such as finely powdered pumice stone of a quality that fuses slightly under the heat of a burning mantle, are applied in the form of a thick paste with a soft paraffin carrier, to the mantle fabric, being connected by bands 2 of a similar material. Any gum soluble in acetone but not readily dissolved inother solvents, such for exampley as gum sandarach, is employed to protect the mantle for shipping purposes.
Under the effect of catalytic matter glows and under the heat of the burning mantle, a fusion takes place of the silicious material which binds the entire mass together. and intimately unites to the fabric of the mantle. v
a current of gas the By this way a very durable and effectivev self-lighting mantle is obtained whichmay be used for gas jets, pilot flames or in other places where it is desirable to have selfigniting burners.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be madel without departing y platinum black and silicious material'fused on the body of the mantle.
ln testimony whereof I aIiX my signature y in the presence of two'witnesses.
Y LILLIAN GLASER.
