Be it known that l, GEORGE WV. PRos'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Lock Haven, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rail-Joint, of which the following is a specification. Y
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a rail joint, and the invention aims to provide a jo-int which will not be depressed by passing trailic. Another o'bject of the invention is so to construct the joint that there will be no pronounced shoulder producing, in common and known constructions, a `pounding action when the rolling stock passes the joint.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of partsand in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made ,without departing from thev spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device con-- structed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, parts being broken away Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a side elevation wherein parts are broken away; and Fig. 6 is a composite perspective showing certain cooperating parts of the device, the view being diagrammatic to some extent.
The device forming the subject matter of this application comprises a pair of rails having reduced overlapped parts 1 defining transverse shoulders 2, the end of said part of one rail coperating with the shoulder 2 of the other rail. The parts 1 are provided in their inner surfaces with longitudinal grooves 3 communicating with transverse seats 4 formed in the shoulders 2, each part 1 having a terminal notch 5 complemental to the seat 4 in the shoulder 2 of the other Y the other rail.

It will be obvious from the foregoing'that the parts 1 of the rails are overlapped in such a manner, that before the wheel passes from one rail, the wheel will be received on A pounding at the joints, therefore will be avoided. `Further, owing to the wayin which the key 6 connects the ends of the rails, the rails will not be depressed readily, and low joints will be avoided..
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is n 1. A pair of rails having reduced Aoverlapped parts defining transverse shoulders, the end of said part of one rail coperating with the shoulder of the other rail, said parts having longitudinal grooves at their inner surfaces communicating with transverse seats formed in the shoulders, each part having a terminal notch complemental to the seat in the shoulder of the other rail; a key in the grooves and provided with oppositely extended projections received inthe seats and in the notches; and means for retaining the rails against lateral separation.
