My invention relates to improvements in traveling rugs and fastenings therefor, and comprises improvements on in" former inven tions described in specifications Nos. 1,242,- 717 and 1,261,.l29, and my present invention has for its object to provide means whereby engagement of the special buckle with the U-shaped fastener is made more secure while still providing for rapid manipulation, as more fully described hereinafter.

According to my present invention, the improven'ients in traveling rugs and fas tenings therefor are substantially the same as shown, dc cribed and claimed in my for-1r r Patent 1,261,429, but with the useful addi am of the special buckle having an elbow or V-shapcd protuberance adapted to engage in a correspondingly shaped recess in the U-shaped fastener of said rug, so that n the rug is in the lapped position when in use, the engagement of the special buckle and strap with the lJ-shaped fastener is made much more secure and is presented from accidentally disengaging or partially disengaging as might easily happen under jolts or jars when engagement is made between the special buckle and the U-shaped fastener if the fastening happened to le more or less slack without the improvements set forth herein.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a plan view of said rug, stra and fastening and component parts in the lapped position. Fig. 2 shows an elevation of the rug and fastening complete. Fig. 3 shows an elevation of said rug and fastening with component parts in a spread out position. Fig. 4 shows a side elevation of the special buckle, and Fig. 5 an end elevation of same. Fig. 6 shows a side elevation of the U- shaped fastener, and Fig. 7 an end elevation of same. The same reference numbers are used for the same parts.

The rug 1 is adapted to lap approxiately one and a half times around the wearer, and is provided on the rear of the waist line witha strap 2 and a reinforcing strip 5, both of which are riveted at 3 by Specification of Letters Patent.

rivets 1. or sewn on to said rug, said strap having spaced elongated holes 5 adapted to engage in a headed projection or protuberance 6 of a special buckle T which latter is slotted at 8 to receive said strap; and to the "rent portion of the rug at 9 is fixed by means of rivets 10 and a reinforcing strip 11, the fastener 12 which is U-shaped at 13, as shown in Fig. 7, the open end of which is placed up or down, as desired, to engage with or disengage from the strap 2.

The essential features of improvement according to the present invention comprise the combination with the traveling rug of a strap such as 2 with a special buckle such as 7, having an elbow or V-shaped protuberance 14: adapted to frictionally engage at 14 in a correspondingly shaped recess 1st in the Li -shaped fastener 12, fixed to said rug, so that greater security in fastening is assured owing to the factthat the elbow or f-shaped wotuberance 1a of the buckle 7 in the recess 14 prevents any unintentional disengagement while at the same time rapid disengagement is attained when desired by slightly separating the buckle from the fastening until the point of the elbow or' ii -shaped protubprance just clears the fastenmg.

The reinforcing strip 11 is further secured to the rug 1 by sewing ,on to same at 15. The outer end of the strip 2 is provided with a guard ring 16 having the known kind of spring-catch 17, so that said guard ring may be easily attached to or detached from said strap, this guard ring being for the purpose of preventing the special buckle 7 from falling off said strap by gravity when. disengaged from said clongated holes. is shown, the fastener 12 is flanged and holed at 18 for fastening to said rug. By means of the U-shaped tener 1:22, which may be inverted, the strap 2 may be rapidly inserted into or detached from the Ushaped slot at 13 so that greater safety is insured in cases of emergency as when driving in the carriage of a runaway horse, while by means of the special buckle 7 any adjustment is easily made by shifting the head 6 to any elongated hole 5 which latter insures an easy attachment to or disengagement from said strap and with greater security owing to the narrower portion of the elongated hole gripping the lower portion of the head or projection 6 when. in the operative position as in Figs. 1 and 2. Said rug is preferably made 01 some water-proof material and lined with somesoift and warm material on the inside, and said fastening with component parts may be made of any suitable material. Said fittings or fasten ings are intended for all classes of traveling rugs.

Having described my invention, what I claim is A combined rug and fastening therefor comprising a rug adapted to lap approximately once and a half around the wearer, a strap with reinforcing strip riveted at one end to said rug, said strap having elongated spaced holes, a guard ring at the opposite end of said strap, a special buckle having an elbow or V-shaped protuberance and slotted to receive said strap and headed to engage with said elongated holes therein, a U-shaped fastener having a corresponding V-shaped recess adapted to frictionally engage with said elbow or V-shaped protuberance, said U-shaped fastener being fixed to said rug and adapted to engage with said strap and with said elbow or V-shaped protuberance of said special buckle, substantially as herein described.
