FRED S. CARR, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGLTOR T0 CARR IlASTENER COMPANY, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application. filed November 27, 1917. Serial No. 204,253.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, FRED S. CARR, a citizen of-the United States, and a resident of Newton, in the "countyof Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, (whose postoflice address is care of Carr Fastener CompanyQCambridge, Massachusetts,) have in-v vented an Improvement in Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts,
This invention pertains to improvements in stud and socket fasteners, and more particularly to improvements in stud 'and socket fasteners for use where it is. desired to separably attach two independent elements to a single stationary support I have elected to show my invention in connection with the attachment of two automobile curtains to a single stud projecting from the side of the car. For this purpose it has been the usual practice heretofore to utilize a sin 1e stud of greater length than ordinary, t is stud projecting through the first curtain and being engaged by a socket attached to the exterior curtain. The'use of an elongated stud I have-elected to show a stud3 fastened to the side ofthe car 4:, the head of the stud 3 being engaged by a socket which is preferably, as shown, attached to the curtain 5 on the same side thereof on which the stud 3 is located, so that it is not necessary to perforate the fabric of the curtain 5 for the passage of the stud 3 .therethrough. The socket may beof any suitable form, but I prefer to provide a front plate 6 having an annular projection 7, 8 adapted to support the head of the stud 3 andcoiiperating with a back plate 9 to retain'in proper position a spring 10 providing resilient jaw elements of any preferred form to engage the neck of the stud 3. The socket is preferably secured to the fabric 5 by prongs 11 projecting through the fabric and through a plate 12 forwardly of the curtain 5 and provided with a'clench-plate 13. To attach the second curtain 14 I preferably provide a second stud 15, which maybe riveted to the clench-plate 13, thus providing a preferred form of combined stud and socket. The stud 15 is adapted to-be-engaged by asocket 16 of any suitable form carried by the curtain 14. I
The stud 15 is preferably alined with the socket attached to the curtain 5 so that, when the socket on the curtain 5 is attached to the stud 3 and the socket on the curtain 14 is attached to the stud 15, the studs 3 and 15 are axially alined one with the other.
If it is desired to utilize only one curtain, the curtain 14: ma be left off or thecurtain 5 may be left off, t e socket l6 being attached directly to the stud 3.
While I have elected to disclose my invention in connection with a form of socket having the socket portion thereof located on the same side of the cotiperating curtain as the cooperating stud, it will be understood that other forms of socket may be utilized vwithout departing from the scope of my invention.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes involvingomission, alteration, reversal and substitution of parts,'and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.
Claims:
-, 1. In a fastening device, a combined stud and socket member for attachment to a flexible fabric comprising a socket on one side of the flexible fabric, said socket con taining a spring for engagement with the neck of an independent stud, and a plate secured to the casing of said socket on the opposite side of said flexible fabric and carrying a stud for engagement With an ina clench plate on the opposite side of the dependent socket. fabric from said casing, and a stud project- 2. In a fastening device, a combined stud ing from said clench plate for engagement 10 and socket member for attachment to a with a second socket. I 5 flexible fabric comprising a spring-contain- In testimony whereof, I have signed my ing casing having projecting prongs passing name to this specification, through the fabric and turned over beneath FRED S. CARR.
