Be it known that I, EDDIE BRYAN B'LAOK, a citizen ofthe United'St'ates, and a resident of Commerce, in the county of Jackson and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements "in Convertible Swings, of which the following is a specification. 7

My invention is an improvement convertible swings, and has "for its object to provide a swing of the character specified. which may *be easily converted into a hammock or reclining swing.

In the present embodiment of the invention the improved swing comprises a supporting frame, composed of two longitudinally extending plates 1 and 2, which supends, ends 3 for the swing, and the said ends are connected by a bottom frame 4, the bottom frame resting on the plates 1 and 2. A back 5 is provided, the said back being secured to the end pieces and to the plate 2 and to the bottom frame 4, and the back may be of any suitable character, in the present instance an open frame, is inclined with respect to the bottom frame as shown. The end frames of the swing have arm rests as shown, and these arm rests extend beyond the front of the swing as shown in Figs. 9. and 3. Supporting chains 6 are provided for the swing, the said chains being adapted to engage hooks and each chain has at the end adjacent to the

8, 9 and 10 which are connected with the plate 1, and with the back and the plate 2 respectively. In the present instance the branch 10 extends from the branch 9, and they are connected to the swing in any suitable or desired manner.

A cushion seat 11 is arranged on the bottom frame, the said seat resting at its center on a bar 12 which extends longitudinally of th bottom or seat frame, and this seat cushion may be of any desired material that is suitable for the purpose. Referring to 1 it will be seen that the bar 12 extends well beyond the bottom frame at each end, and it supports the central portion of the cushion elevated, so that the cushion as a Specification of Letters Patent. The plate 13 is detachably held to the back frame 5, in any suitable manner, as for instance by bolts 17 which are mounted to slide in guide plates 18 on the ends of the back frame. These bolts engage staples 19 on the forward edges of the plate 13, and the staples pass through slots in the plates 18 which lap upon the forward edges of the plate 13 when the plate 13 is in place on the back frame, thus locking the plate in place on the back frame, when the device is used as a swing. All of the strain on the plate 13 when the device is in use as a swing, and there is very little-strain on the said plate, tends to draw it toward the back frame, so that it is not difiicult to hold it in place. This plate 13 is provided with eyes '20 near its ends, which are adapted to ,be engaged by chains 21 to support the de-v vice in the manner shown in Fig. 4. Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the plate 13 is long enough to extend well beyond the end frame when it is in place.

In use, when the device is arranged as shown in Fig. 3, it makes a very comfortable swing or seat. strip 14 is wrapped about the plate 13. When itis desired to extend the device into a hammock, the plate 13 is detached from the end frame, and is connected with the chains 21. The device is now a comfortable hammock, the seat cushion serving as a pillow. Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the chains 8 and 10 are connected to the plates 1 and 2 by means of bolts The This strip is sufiicient The excess length of the edge of the plates 1 and 2 is slottecl ends to permit the passage of a link of the chain, and the bolt moves in staples 23 which are arranged on opposite sides of the slot. When the chain has been inserted through the slot, the bolt is pushed into place, thus firmly locking the chain. The branches 9 are connected with eyes 24 on the ends of the back frame.

It is to be understood that the improved swing may be constructed of any desired or approved material, may be of any desired dimensions and shape in accordance with conditions. The essential feature of the invention is the detachable plate to which one end of the flexible strip is connected, being connected at the other end to the cushion and hinging the cushion to the seat frame at the forward end of the frame, so that when the strip is extended it will form a hammock.

I claim: 7

1. In combination, a seat frame, a cushion for the frame, a plate extending longitudinally of the seat frame at the top and back thereof, means for detachably connecting said plate to the frame, a flexible strip connected at one end to the plate and at the other to the seat and forming the back of the seat frame, and having a portion winding upon the plate when the plate is in place on the frame and adapted to be extended when the plate is removed to form a hammock, said cushion being hinged to the seat frame at the forward edge of the cushion, means for suspending the seat frame, said means being detachable from the rear of the seat frame for the purpose specified.

2. In combination, a seat frame, a cushion for the frame, a plate extending longitudinally of the seat frame at the top and back thereof, means for detachably connecting said plate to the frame, a flexible strip connected at one end to the plate and at the other to the seat and forming the back of the seat frame and having a portion Winding upon the plate when the plate is in place on the frame and adapted to be extended when the plate is removed to form a hammock, said cushion bein hinged to the seat frame at the forwar edge of the cushion.
