Description

- ,P. A. STEPHENS. ADVERTISING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4. 19 19.

PHILIP A. STEPHENS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed June 4, 1919. Serial No. 301,680.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising devices and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described.
An object of the invention is to provide an advertising deivice icomprising a Web whereon an advertising sign may be displayed, in combination with means for reciprocating the web into and out of the case.
Other features of the invention will be apparent without specific mention from the following detailed description thereof, taken in connection with accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a cross section through the case that incloses the operating parts of the device, showing the web partially projected from the case, and
Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the fragment of the web.
The invention as illustrated in a drawing comprises a box-like case 1. Within the case and journaled in a vertical position is a air of rollers 2. The rollers have attac ed thereto intermeshing gear wheels 3.
A web 4. has its ends secured to the rollers 2, and is preferably made of some form of translucent material, and it is adapted to be wound upon the rollers in opposite directions. The web extends outwardly through spaced vertical slots 5 in one wall of the case. A binding 6, is attached to the web at the top and bottom edges thereof. This binding is made of fine gage sheet metal, so that it may be wound upon the rollers. The binding serves to hold the web in extended position, when it is projected from the case. Any suitable advertising legend may be placed upon the, web A, in such a way that it maybe read when the web is fully projected from the case.
As the web is projected in double folds from the case for illuminated advertising, electric lights may be interposed between the spaced parts of the folded web.
The web is alternately projected and contracted from and into the case by winding it upon and unwinding it from the rollers upon which the web is'wound, Any suitable means for imparting to the rollers a reciprocating rotary motion may be employed. As illustrated, the operating mechanism comprises a motor M, having a drive shaft 7 which is equipped with a worm gear 8 meshing with one of the gear wheels 3.
The motor may be equipped with a reverse switch R. S. whereby the shaft is driven first in one direction and then in the other, after a predetermined number of rotations, in each direction.
I am aware the invention may be modified in detail without departing from the scope of the invention. What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An advertising device, comprising a case, a pair of rollers mounted in said case, a web having the opposite ends thereof secured to said rollers, and adapted to be wound upon and unwound from said rollers, and means for operating said rollers, whereby said web is alternately projected and drawn within said case.
2. In an advertising device the combination with a case having spaced'slots in one wall thereof, of a pair of rollers, journaled for rotation within said case, a web havin opposite ends thereof attached to sai rollers, flexible metallic strips attached to the upper and lower edges of said web, Said web being arranged to be wound on the rollers in opposite directions, and means for alternately winding and unwinding the web whereby the same is projected from an contracted within said case.
3. An advertising device, comprising a case having spaced slots in one wall thereof, a pair of rollers within the case, a web of flexible material, having the oppositeends thereof adjusted to wind in opposite directions on said rollers, a pair of gears attached to said rollers, respectively, said. gears intermeshing, and means for operating said gears in an alternating, rotary di rection, whereby said web is alternately wound upon and from said rollers, and thereby projected from and contracted with in said case.
PHILIP A. STEPHENS.
