ROBERT L. UPGHURCH, OF PANA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LADDERS AND SCAFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,506, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. UPCHURCH, of Pana, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois,- have invented a Combined Ladder and Scaffold, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in constructing an article adapted to use (by painters, carpenters, and others) as a scaffold to be employed at the sides of walls and cornices, to serve as an ordinary step-ladder when folded, and to serve as a fruit-ladder when reversed.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my new article of manufacture when used as a fruit-pickingstand. Fig.1 is a side elevation illustrating its application as a scaffold.
\ A represents a common step-ladder, having its sides perforated at a. B B are uprights,
perforated at b, notched at N, and held by a bolt, N, to the feet thereof; and b are intermediate spacers or washers, used to hold the uprights at the proper distance in folding up. 0 O are arms, held by a bolt, 0, to the ladder at various points, more or less distant from the upper end, and by a bolt, 0, to the uprights B B. D is a notched crossbar. E is the side of a house, and F is a window therein.
If it is designed to use the article as a scaffold, the foot of ladder is placed on windowsill (as shown in Fig. 2 of drawing) with the lower end of uprights on or against the out- .set in the notches b side, while the upper ends pass in the window and are firmly held by the transverse bar D One side being placed at each of two windows, boards are laid across, resting with one end upon each arm, 0.
If the article is to be used as a step-ladder, the bolt 0 is removed and the uprights, with the arms, folded on each side of the ladder. On the other hand, if it is to be employed as a fruit-picking stand, the uprights and arms are transferred to the opposite side of the ladder from that on which they are placed for forming a scaffold.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A compound ladder and scaffold, consisting of ladder A, having its sides perforated, the uprights B, perforated at b, notched at b, and
held by bolt b to the feet of said ladder, the bars 0 having apertures near the bottom as set forth. I
ROBERT L. UPGHURGH.
