FOR CALCULATING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed June 24,1919. Serial No. 306,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that 1, Euro ELIAS SVENSSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Gottenborg, in the county of Gottenborg and Bohus and Kingdom of Sweden, have ii ed new and useful Improvements in llctents for Calcuiating-Machines, of which said type of calculating machines, which detents have for object to check the gears of the indicating mechanism when these gears are not operated upon by the counting disks. More particularly this invention has reference to means for automatically releasing the coaction between the detents and the indicating gears when the adjustable pins of the counting disks pass by and operate the said indicating gears.
The object of this invention is an, automatically operative device to release the said co iperationbetween the dctents and the indicating gears for the purpose to avoid the noise otherwise effected by the dctents when sliding over the teeth of the gearsin the indicating mechanism as the last mentioned gears are caused to rotate by the influence of the operative adjustable pins of the counting disks.
in the accompanying drawing an ear. bodiment of the invention is shown, whereby Figure 1 shows a cross sectional view of a portion of a calculating machinei with the present detent in a certain operative position, 1
Z a similar view with the detent in another operative position, 1
the same parts with the detent in operative position and top view of the machine with a I to show t as i of the counting disks in a prrwided with adjustable 1 one of the toothed gear of the incl eating echanisra means of an. intermediate pinion a. .ihe inoicatnig mechanism 5 r e is kept proper position by a de-Mit 5, the arm or which is de signed as a double-armed lever 6 and 0s; cillating around a pivot 8 in a member '7 projecting laterally from the lever 6. A spiral-spring 9 acts upon the lever 6, at the end with the detent 5 andtends to cause the detent to cooperate with the teeth of the wheeled 'lhe lever 6 in the opposite end is provided with apivot 10, upon which oscillates as. a double armed lever a member .11 with rounded or sloping ends, and positioned close beside the intermediate pinion 4. The adjustable pins 20f the disk .1 are of such a design and width,-that they gear with the teeth of the intermediate pinion i at the same time as they actuate the oscillating member 11 as shown in Fig. 4. i
' The operation of the improved device will be as follows;
When the pins 2 of the counting disk 1 are adjusted in position for a certain calculation and the disk 1 isrotated for in- StZiIlCQHI the direction of the arrow in Fig; l, the first pm 2 will. meet and act upon the member 11 v(Fig. 1) in such a manner, that the said member by the continued rotating of the disk 1 will be tilted-a little and slide on the top of the passing pins 2; The pressure thereby exerted on the lever 6 of the detent 5 will cause the same to swing on the pivot 8 into the position, shown in Fig. 2 in such a way, that the detent 5 is removed oi? the path of the teeth of the indicating gear 3 and remains disengaged in this position so long as the teeth of the intermediate pinion. 4: are in gear with the pins 2 of the counting disk 1, and accordingly the indicating mechanism: gear .3 rotated. by means of the intermediate pinion 4. As a consequence there will be no engagement gear 3- during the revolving of the last mentioned gear and thus the revolving will be achieved noiselessly. When allthe operative pins 2 have passed the teethofthe intermediate pinion 4 the. member 11 again gets tilted but in an opposite direction and slips off from the pins 2 (Fig. 3),.whereby the detent 5 by the influence of the spring 9 will be thrown back into its locking position in gear with the gear 3.
Having thus fully described my said invention and how it is to be performed what 1' claim as newgand' desire to protect by Letters Patent is I 1. In a calculating machine the combination with a counting disk having adjustable plns, intermeshing indicator 1 mechanism gears one of which is engaged at suitable intervals by the pins of the disk so as to be rotated thereby, a detent co-acting with the other gear, and means (Jo-acting with the detent and normally lying against the disk in the path of the pins to cause a disengage ment of the detent at the time the pins engage the said gear. 7
2. In a calculating machine, the combina tion with a counting disk having adjustable pins, indicating mechanism gears, one of arm of the lever and lying against the disk in the path of the pins so as to be engaged by the pins during rotation of the disk to cause a disengagement of the detent atthe time the pins engage the first mentioned gear.
3. In a calculating. machine, In combination, a counting disk having adjustable pins,
a rotatably mounted indicator mechanism gear, a rotatably mounted indicator mechanism pinion meshing With the gear and positioned so as to be engaged at suitable intervals by the pins of the disk so that rotation of the latter insures of rotation of the pinion and gear, double armed lever pivotally mounted in proximity to the gear and pinion, a detent carried by one arm of the lever for engagement with the gear,-means for yieldingly holding the detent in its engaged position, and an oscillatory member mounted on the other arm of the lever and having its curved engaging; face lying against the disk and in the path of movement of the pins so/as to be slidably engaged at times by the pins of the disk to cause a swinging of the double armed lever and a disengagement of the detent at the time'the pins engage the pinion. I
in testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
