CALCULATING MACHINE.

To all whom it may comm;
' Be it known that I, FRANZ TRINKS, a citizen of Germany, residing at Brunswick, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating Machines (for which I have filed applications in Germany, March 28, 1923; Austria, February 7, 1924; Czechoslovakia, Feb. 12, 1924; France, Feb. 19, 1924; Denmark, Feb. 13, 1924; Sweden, Feb. 13, 1924; Poland, Feb. 22, 1924; Danzig, Feb. 9, 1924), of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly in calculating machines of the class described in the patent of the United States No. 1,445,- 461 granted February 13, 1923, to Franz Trinks in which the numeral wheels are provided with two series of numbers located one beside the other, displaced with relation to each other a distance corresponding to one value and ascending in opposite directions, and in which the revolutions counting mechanism is provided with carrying mechanism. In machines of this type, when passing from the addition seriesof numbers to the subtraction series, a slide adapted to cover the peep holes is shifted from the addition series of numbers to the subtraction series. Now when going over from the addition to the subtraction series of figures a continuous carrying operation is performed, in order to set the proper initial-figure for subtracs tion or division in the peep holes. Therefore the signalling apparatus is made operative which is designed to call the attention of the attendant to the fact that the machine has been used to its full capacity, though this fact is not of interest at this time.
The object of the improvement is to provide a machine in which the signalling apparatus is not operated under the aforesa1d conditions, and with this object in view my invention consists in providing the revolutions counting mechanism at the left of the. numeral wheel of the highest order with a disk connected with the said numeral wheel by carrying means and carrying a pin adapte to operate the signalling. devlce, which pin is normally so located that it doesnot act on said device and is set into operative osition only after the said numeral wheel iias completed a full rotation and transmitted a. carrying movement to the disk,
thus indicating that the revolutions counting mechanism has been used to its full capaclty.
In order that my invention be more clearly understood an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawmg, 1n which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate correspondlng parts. In said drawing,

In the figures I have shown a part of a calculating machine described in detail in the aforesaid patent to Trinks, and I deem 113 11013 necessary to give a detailed description of the machine. It willbe understood that the numeral wheels 2 of the revolutions counting mechanism are connected by many mg mechanisms represented in Fig. 1 by carrying levers 5 and rockable operatin members 6, and that they are provided wit resetting means represented by a wing nut 16. i
At the left of the numeral wheel 2 ofthe hlghest order a disk 4 is loosely mounted on the shaft 3 of the revolutions counting mechanism, which shaft is connected with a gear wheel 9 in mesh with a gear wheel 8. At the side of the gear wheel 8 there is a carrymg lever 5 adapted to be operated by the numeral wheel 2 of the highest order and to set an operating member 6 taking part in the rotary movement of the setting mechanlsm into position for engagement with the gear wheel 8 and for advancing the disk 4 one step. The disk 4 shows two laterally pro ecting pins 10'and 101 in position for acting on a rockable lever 11 carrying the hammer 12 of a bell 13 and acted upon by a spring 1 tending to throw the same against the bell. The lever 11 is formed with a nose 111 adapted to be engaged by the ins 10 and 101 and near the said nose it s owe a pin 14 projecting laterall therefrom and into the path of a cam d1sk 15 secured to the shaft 3. The pins 10 and 101 are spaced from each other a distance corresponding to two values of the numeral wheels. The disk 4 is equipped with resetting means, and when resetting the same by means of the wing nut 16 the pin 10 is in the position shown in Fig. 2 in which its distance from the nose 111 corresponds to two values of the numeral wheels 2.
After resetting the revolutions counting mechanism by means of the wing nut 16 the disk 4, the cam disk 15 and the spring pressed lever 11 are in the positions shown in Fig. 2. If new the peep hole slide 17 is shifted into the position corresponding to the division series of numbers of the numeral wheels 2 and a continuous carrying operation is performed in the revolutlons counting mechanism, as has been described in the aforesaid patent to Trinks, the disk 4 is advanced one step in the direction of the arrow at shown in Fig. 2 without engaging the nose 111 and actuating the bell hammer 12. If thereafter upon operation of the machine the revolutions counting mechanism has been actuated to its full capacity and the last one of the numeral wheels has completed one rotation, carrying movement is transmitted to the disk 4 so that the pin 10 engages the nose 111' and operates the hammer 12.
The pin 101 is operated in a similar way after setting the slide 17 into position for displaying the addition or multiplication series of numbers, by turning the disk 4 in a direction opposite to the arrow as.
When resetting the revolutions counting mechanism and returning the disk 4 into initial position a signal by the bell 13 is not desired. Therefore the cam face of the disk 15 which takes part in the resetting movement of the shaft 3 rocks the lever 11 into inoperative position in which it is out of the path of the pins 10 and 101, whereupon it is rocked by the spring 1 into operative position between the pins 10 and 101.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the drawing, and that various changes may be made in the general arrangement of the apparatus and the construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. In a calculating machine, the combination with revolution counting mechanism comprising numeral wheels, of signalling means, a member rotatable coaxially of the numeral wheels and carrying two operating members for the signalling means spaced from each other a distance corresponding to two values of the numeral wheels of the revolutions counting mechanism, resetting means for said member, and carrying means intermediate the revolutions counting mechanism and said member.
2. In a calculating machine, the combination with revolution counting mechanism comprising numeral Wheels, of signalling means, a member rotatable coaxially of the numeral wheels and carrying two operating members for the signalling means spaced from each other a distance corresponding to two values of the numeral wheels of the revolutions counting mechanism, resetting means for said member, carrying means intermediate the revolutions counting mechanism and said member, and a member taking part in the movement of the resetting means for temporarily throwing said signalling means out of operation.
3. In a calculating machine, the combination with revolution counting mechanism comprising numeral wheels, of signalling means, a member rotatable coaxially of the numeral wheels and carrying two operating members for the signalling means spaced from each other a distance corresponding to two values of the numeral wheels of the revolutions counting mechanism, resetting means for said member, carrying means intermediate the revolutions counting mechanism and said member, and a disk taking part in the movement of the resetting means and provided with two cam faces adapted when resetting the revolutions counting mechanism to engage said signalling means for preventing the signalling movement thereof.
