CARRYING MECHANISM FOR CALCULATING-MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANZ TRINKs, manufacturer, citizen of the Duchy of Brunswick, Empire of Germany, residing at Brunswick, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carrying Mechanisms for Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carrying mechanisms for calculating machines, and the object of the improvements is to provide carrying mechanism which is exact and reliable in operation, and in which overthrowing of the numeral wheels and transmission gearings is prevented by means of a single locking device for the gearings of each order.
With this object in view my invention consists in mounting the gearing which is thrown into operation when a numeral Wheel passes from its nine position to its Zero position (or vice versa) on a lever which is adapted to be rocked about the axis of an intermediate gear wheel, and which is locked in the operative position of the gearmg.
For the purpose of explaining the invention I have shown a calculating machine in which the values to be transmitted to the numeral wheels are set on setting disks provided with teeth which are adapted to be shifted into and out of operative positions by means of cam disks provided one for each of the setting disks. A machine of this class has been described in United States Patent No. 935,565 previously granted to me. The improved carrying mechanism will be described hereinafter in combination with the revolutions counting mechanism. But I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the use in combination with a revolutions counting mechanism nor with the particular machine shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made in the construction and general arrangement of the parts without departing from the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is an end view of the calculating machine with the side wall of the casing removed, Fig. 2, 'is a plan view of Fig. 1 partly in section and with some of the parts broken away, and Fig. 3, is a detail view showing the carrying mechanism with its parts in carrying position.

used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.
The calculating machine which has been shown in the drawings for the purpose of explaining the invention is of known construction, so that only a brief description of the parts is necessary.
The setting mechanism consists of setting disks 22 secured one beside the other to a shaft 21 and provided with teeth 23 adapted to be shifted into or out of operative position by cam disks 24:. The said teeth cooperate with intermediate gear wheels 26 which are in mesh with teeth 27 connected with numeral wheels 28 of the registering mechanism. For transmit-ting the values set on the setting disks 22 by means of the cam disks 24 to the numeral wheels 28, the setting disks are rotated by means of a crank 25. The numeral wheels 28 are loosely mounted on a shaft 30 provided with wing nuts 29 for operating the same for resetting the numeral wheels, and they cooperate with carrying levers 31. When a numeral wheel passes from its nine position to its zero position, or vice versa, the cooperating carrying lever rocks a tooth 32 provided on the set ting disk of the next higher order laterally and into position for engagement with the intermediate gear wheel 26 cooperating with the setting disk, so that the said intermediate gear wheel and the numeral wheel controlled thereby are shifted one step. The registering mechanism is mounted on a slide 33 which is adapted to be shifted in a direction parallel to the aXis 21 of the setting mechanism. On the said slide and coaxially of the registering mechanism 28 a revolutions counting mechanism 34 may be provided for registering the number of the revolutions of the machine crank 25, as is shown in Fig. 2. This revolutions counting mechanism is operated from the shaft 21 by means of a single tooth 35 mounted thereon. The registering mechanism is equipped with a wing nut 36 for resetting the same. In the upper part of the machine and at the rear of the setting mechanism 21, 22, 23, 24 a second revolutions counting mechanism 6 is provided which does not take part in the shifting movement of the slide 33. The said revolutions counting mechanism is provided with a single tooth wheel 3 which is longitudinally shiftable on its shaft 1 in a direction opposite to the movement of the slide. Means for shifting the single tooth wheel 3 from the slide 33 are shown in United States Patent No. 935,565 previously granted to me. As my present invention does not particularly relate to this mechanism it has not been shown in the accom panying drawings. The shaft 1 is adapted to be rotated from the shaft 21 of the setting mechanism through the intermediary of gear wheels 37, 38, 39, or by other suitable means.
My present invention relates more particularly to the carrying mechanism which is shown in the present example in combination with the revolutions counting mechanism 6.
Upon each rotation the single tooth wheel 3 mounted on the shaft 1 turns a numeral wheel 6 forward or backward at an angle corresponding to one step, for which purpose intermediate gear wheels 4:, 5 and 6 are provided. lVhen a numeral wheel passes from its nine position to its zero position a pin 7 secured to the coiiperating intermediate gear wheel 5 acts on a lever 8 in such a way, that a gear wheel 9 is rocked which is mounted on the said lever and is in constant engagement with the intermediate gearwheel it. Thereby the gear wheel 9 is thrown into the path of rocking carrying teeth mounted on the setting disks 22, so that upon rotation of the setting disks 22 the carrying teeth 32 or teeth 11, 12 specially provided for this purpose engage in the gear wheel 9 and act on the numeral wheel 6 of the next higher order through the intermediary of the gear wheels 4, 5, 6. The gear wheel 9 is locked in its rocked or operative position by means of a pawl 14: acted upon by a spring 13, the free end of the lever 8 being engaged by a shoulder 15 on said pawl, as is shown in Fig. 3. At the end of the carrying operation the locking pawl 14 is rocked in the direction of the arrow w shown in Fig. 3 by means of a bell crank lever 17 which rocks an arm 16 connected with the pawl in the same direction indicated by the arrow m. The lever 17 is rocked by means of a cam disk 18 which takes part in the rotation of the shaft 21 of the setting mechanism, as is shown in.
Fig. 2. In the example shown in the figures the lever 17 is mounted on a shaft 37 and the arm 16 is secured to a shaft 38 which provides a support for all the pawls 14. In order that each of the pawls can be thrown into locking engagement with the cotiperating lever 8 independently of the other pawls, the pawls have a certain play relativerto the shaft 88, this being due to the fact that the pins I0, which actuate the pawls when said shaft is rocked, project through slots 39 in the hubs of the pawls. After rocking the pawl 14 a spring 19 forces the bell crank lever 8 downward, and the lever 8 engages with the lower shoulder 20 of the pawl 14.
Now all the parts are again in the normal position shown in Fig. 1, so that the same operation is repeated when the pin 7 secured to the gear 5 acts on the lever 8. For resetting the revolutions counting mechanism a wing nut 10 is provided.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same, I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the general arrangement and construction of the parts shown in the drawings, and that various changes may be made without departing from the invention. For example, the mechanism for throwing the gear wheel 9 into operative position may be such, that the gear wheel is shiftable in an axial direction.
I claim:
1. In a calculating machine, the combination with at least two numeral wheels, of an operating member, a gear wheel, means controlled in accordance with the numeral wheel of lower order to throw said gear wheel into position for operation by said operating member, an operative connection between said gear wheel and the numeral Wheel of the next higher order, and means to lock the gear wheel in position for operation by the operating member.
2. In a calculating machine, the combina-.
tion with at least two numeral wheels, of an operating member, a rocking lever, a gear wheel attached to said lever for movement bodily therewith, means controlled in accordance with the numeral wheel of lower order to engage and rock the lever with the gear wheel into position for operation by said operating member, and an operative connection between said gear wheel and the numeral wheel of the next higher order.
3. In a calculating machine, the combination with at least two numeral wheels, of an operating member, a rocking lever, a gear wheel carried thereby, means controlled in accordance with the numeral wheel of lower order to rock the lever with the gear wheel into position for operation by said operating member, and an operative connection between said gear wheel and the numeral wheel of the next higher order, and means to lock the rocking lever with the gear wheel in position for operation by said operating member.
4. In a calculating machine, the combination with at least two numeral wheels, of an operating member, a rocking lever, a gear wheel carried thereby, means controlled in accordance with the numeral wheel of lower order to rock the lever with the gear wheel into position for operation by said operating member, an operative connection between said gear wheel and the numeral wheel of the next higher order, a spring actuated pawl adapted to lock said rocking lever with the gear wheel in position for operation by said operating member, and means movable with the operating member and operative after the same to throw said pawl out of locking engagement with the rocking lever.
5. In a calculating machine, the combination with at least two numeral wheels, of an operating member, a gear wheel, means controlled in accordance with the numeral wheel of lower order to throw said gear wheel into position for operation by said operating member, an operative connection between said gear wheel and the numeral wheel of the next higher order, and means to lock the gear wheel in position for operation by the operating member, and means movable with the operating member and operative after the same to throw the locking means out of locking engagement with the gear wheel.
6. In a calculating machine, the combination, with at least two numeral wheels, and individual operating gearing for each, of an operating member, a gear constantly engaged with the gearing of higher order, and means operable by the gearing of lower order for throwing said gear into position for engagement by said operating member.
7. In a calculating machine, the combination, with at least two numeral wheels, and individual operating gearing for each, of an operating member, a rocking lever, a gear carried by said lever for movement bodily therewith, said gear being constantly engaged with the gearing of higher order, and means connected to the gearing of lower order for engaging and rocking said lever to throw said gear into position for engagement by said operating member.
