Be it known that LEARL M. IVITHERELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the followingis a specification, reference Ibeing had therein to the accompanying drawing. v

This invention relates to knitted or woven leggings and particularly to that class designed to cover the shoe on the wearerl as well as the leg and provided with a wearing soleunder the forward part only of the foot, the heel of the shoe projecting through the heel of the legging.

I-am aware that leggngs of this general character are old, some being made with thin narrow soles designed with the special object of permitting of overshoes or rubbers being worn thereover and others made slightly different with a shorter thin sole portion made especially for wear in cold dry climates and on walks or pavements when there is no moisture or dampness thereupon.

It is very evident that the limitation of use o-f such articles is a serious handicap, and to overcome these limitations is the principal obj ect of my present invention.

Another object is to provide an article of this character which may be worn during all kinds of weather and one efi'ectually protected against wear and hard usage such as would result in their being worn by children.

Other objects and advantages of the novelconstruction will appear in the further description of the invention. 4

of somewhat similar character having thin narrow soles sewed directly to the fabric of which the legging is composed have proven of very short life and impractical for rough wear as that portion of the fabric extending beyond the sides of the sole can not withstand the wear incident to engagement with. the walk or ground traversed and as no positive protection or lateral guide is provided for the sole of the shoe over which the legging is worn, it very soon engages the ground and becomes worn through or absorbs moisture, resulting in unsatisfactory service.

In my improved legging l represents the knitted or woven portion the foot of which is provided with two openings 2 and 3 in the heel and sole portions thereof respectively. 4 is the wearing sole which is of a width substantially greater than the width of the sole of the shoe over which the legging is to be worn; this sole is composed preferably of rubber'and has formed integral therewith about the toe and sides thereof an. upstanding flange 5 against the inside of which the edges of the sole opening 3 in the knitted portion are attached and that, preferably by a. suitable process of vulcanizing though Stitching may be resorted to if desired.

The instep terminations 6 of the flange 5 incline gracefully downwardly and merge into the arcuately shaped instep termination 7 of the sole.'

I prefer to leave the instep portion of the legging of the knitted fabric to more snugly it different heights of insteps and for general neat appearance, the portion 7 of the wearing sole being connected by vulcanizing to the adjacent edge of the instep in the same manner as the flange 5 is attached to the fabric.

The edges of the heel opening 2 may or may not be reinforced as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

l. As a new article of manufacture, a legging comprising a knitted leg and foot portion having an opening at the bottom of the foot forward of the instep, said knitted portion extending under the instep, a rubber sole portion adapted to close said forward opening, said sole having an upstanding flange formed thereon at its front and sides inward of its edges and o-utward of the knitted portion at the front and sides'of said forward opening, the edges of said knitted portion at the front and sides of said forward opening being cemented to theinner face of said flange, the body portion of said sole extending a short distance rearwardly of said flanges, the forward edge of the knitted portion below the instep being cemented to the upper face of said extension.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a legging comprising a knitted or woven portion avlng an opening at the bottom of the heel and at the bottom of the forward portion of' the' -foot, said knitted portion extending across the foot below the instep, a sole portion for closing said forward opening, said sole being provided Withan ap roximately vertical iange'at its front and sides inwardly of the outer edges of the tread, said flange shallowing toward its rearward ends to the v plane of the horizontal portion of the sole, the edges of the knitted portion at the front and sides of said forward opening being secured to said flange, the edge of the knitted portion in rear of said forward opening being secured to the horizontal portion of said sole, the rearward end of said sole being spaced from said heel opening to expose the major part of the knitted portion below the instep arch.
