' J. K. PROCTOR. Stripping and Feed-Rolls for Surfing-Machines, &c.
N0. 133,482. Patented Nov.26,1872

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. JOSIAH x. rnocron, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR or ONE- HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES R. LINDSAY, OFv SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRIPPING AND FEED-ROLLS FOR BURRING-MACHINES. Ktc.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH K. PROOTOR, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Cleaning or Stripping Feed-Rolls on Machinery forOarding or Picking Fibrous Material; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and ulse the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure l in the drawing is an end elevation of the parts of a burring, carding, or picking machine embodying my improvement, showin g the burr-roll or licker-in, the feed-rolls, and clearer or stripper, with the adjustable stands for the same, the connecting-gears being removed to show the action of the feed-rolls and clearer or stripper teeth and their relation to the burr-roll or licker-in. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of feed-rolls and clearer or stripper, showing their connection by gears, the intersection of their teeth, and arrangement of the adjustable stands. Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view of one of the feed-roll bearings, showing its adjustable connection to the stand.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawing represents the burr-roll or licker-in. B B represent the feed-rolls. 0 represents a third or top roll, of a like construction with the feed-rolls. All move in the directions indicated by the arrows. D D are gears connecting the feed-rolls B B. E E are gears connecting the bottom feed-roll B with the third or top roll or clearer G. G G are the feed-roll stands, having suitable feet for bolting to the frame of the machine, the upright portion being slotted to receive the bolts for securing the feed-roll bearings or boxes to the stands. H are boxes or bearings supporting the feed-rolls and stripper, B B and 0, having each a slotted arm for attaching to the stand G. F F are double-faced shoes or gibs, having projecting lips on either side at right angles to each other, said lips or projections embracing on one side the upright slotted portion of the stand G, and on the other side the slotted arm of the roller box or bearing H, the whole being secured by bolts 1' 1' passing through the slotted stand, gib, or shoe, and arm of the box or bearings F.
It can be readily seen, by the foregoing description and reference to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, that as wool or other fibrous material is pressed in between the feed-rolls B B the inclination would be for the material to lap around and fill up between the teeth of the feed-rolls; and while it is evident that the teeth of the blurroll or licker-in itself (from the direction of the movements and hook of the teeth) would tend to clear the bottom roller B, yet the second roller B would at once fill up with the wool or other material between its teeth.v It will also be seen that, by the direction of its movement and the direction of the hook of the teeth, (the one being in the proper direction to receive and the other to release the wool or other material,) the action of the third roll or stripper 0 must be to clear the wool from the feed-roll B and deliver it to the burr-roll or licker-in A, and thus efi'ectu'ally prevent any clogging or filling up of the teeth of the feedrolls. It will also be seen, by the description and drawing of the feed-roll stands, that, by means of the slot in the upright part, the box or bearings of the feed-rolls or stripper C may be moved either up or down, and by means of the slot in the arm of the said box or bearings the rolls may also be moved either to or from the burr-roll or licker-in, and at the same time the box or bearings will be effectually prevented from swinging either up or down by means of the projecting lips of the intervening shoeor gib 'F, thereby admitting of a universal adjustment, and at the same time a perfectly rigid and firm hold.
- I am aware that rolls, vibrating combs, and other devices have been applied for the purpose of clearing feed-rolls, but serving only to clear outside the teeth, whereas, as the teeth of my clearer or stripper pass between or in tersect with the teeth of the feed-roll, it must thoroughly clear the teeth to the bottom.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the feed-rolls of a burring or similar machine, of a clearer or stripper, the teeth of which are arranged so that they extend down between the teeth of thefeed rdlls, for the purpose of removin g the fibrous material therefrom, substantially as described.
2. The stand G, slotted vertically so as to admit of the adjustment of the shoe F, in com-t bination with said fs'hoe F, the bearings H havinglatralslotS tofpermit adjustment in a horizontal plane, and the fB6d-l011S B B with or without the stripper G, substantially --as specified.
