SPROCKET-GLEANER FOR FILIVI-ADVANCING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1920.
Application filed August 7, 1918. Serial No. 248,671.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WENDER- HOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprocket- Cleaners for Film-Advancing Apparatus, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in film feeding mechanism.
The object of this invention is to provide means which will keep the periphery of a film advancing wheel absolutely free from dirt and deposits that otherwise accumulate thereon.
It is a well known fact to operators of motion picture apparatus, that motion picture film deposits dust and dirt on the periphery of sprockets, thereby injuring the accurate advancement of films, which is ab solutely essential for the production of a perfect picture.
Referring to my drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a motion picture projecting apparatus embodying my device, partly in cross-section.
To accomplish the object in view, I provide a rotating brush 1 behind a film sprocket, preferably the intermittently rotating sprocket, said brush 1 being mounted upon a shaft 2, which shaft has a spiral gear 3 driven by the spiral gear 4:, which gear 4: is in mesh wi 11 the gear 5, which is part of the general operating mechanism of a moving picture machine.
The film F is advanced by the well known feed sprockets 6 and 7. It is then advanced intermittently by the sprocket 8, behind which I have placed my improvement.
It is easily understood that by means of the constantly rotating brush 1, the periphery of the film sprocket 8 is kept perfectly clean, thereby insuring perfect intermittent advancement of the film strip F.
\Vhile I have shown and described a specific structure embodying the principles of my invention, I wish it to be understood that my invention in its broad scope as defined by the claims is not to be limited or restricted thereto, as many changes in details of construction will readily appear to those skilled in the art without departing from the contemplated spirit and scope of my invention.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a motion picture apparatus the combination with film feed sprockets of rotary means to prevent the accumulation of deposits on the peripheries thereof.
2. In a motion picture apparatus the combination with film feed sprockets, a brush in contact with said sprockets to prevent the accumulation of dirt deposits on the periph cry of said sprockets and means to actuate said brush.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 17th day of July, one thousand nine hundred and eighteen.
WILLIAM WENDERHOLD.
