1TB era JOHN '1. WELLS, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE EDWABD$ MFG. COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, 01-110, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
FILM-FEED MECHANISM FOR MOVING-PICTURE MACHINES.
Application filed June 21, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN T. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Film-Feed Mechanism for Moving-Picture Machines, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
My invention relates to an improvement in film feeding devices for moving picture machines and is more particularly directed to that type of machines employing an intermittently rotated film feed roller for positively moving the film past the focal plane of the machine.
The object of this invention is to provide a constantly rotated operating element for a film feed roller operatively connected thereto by an intermittently rotated member, the axis of the roller being positioned within the periphery of the operating element.
Another object of the invention is to provide a constantly driven operating element and an intermittently rotated feed sprocket mounted in relative parallelism, the shafts of the sprocket being positioned within the periphery of the operating element and provided with a film engaging roller.
Various other objects will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation, partly in section of a moving picture film feed mechanism. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the feed sprocket.
The film feed mechanism is mounted on a base board 1 and a front board 2 and includes a pair of side frames 3, 1, in which are ournaled the various drive shafts. The film guide plate 5 is secured to the front board and is provided with a light aperture 6, and an adjustable framing plate 7. The film in its downward travel through the machine is first engaged by a constantly driven feed roller 8 in driving connection with the power shaft 9 through the gear train 10, 11, 12. The intermittently operated feed roller 13 produces an intermittent feed of the film Specification of Letters Patent.

past the light aperture 6 after which it is engaged by a second constantly driven roller 14 in driving connection with the power shaft 9 through the gear train 10, 15, 16, 17.
The intermittently rotated feed roller 13 is secured to a shaft 18, which is j ournaled at one end in the side frame 3 and bracket 19 secured thereto, the other end being journaled in a bearing 20 extending from the film guide plate 5. To this end of the shaft 18 is fixed a feed sprocket having an operating flange 21 and an alining and retaining hub 22. stantly driven cupped disk 23 which is in driving connection with the power shaft 9 through the gears 24, 25. The disk is j ournaled on a stud shaft 28 secured in the side frame 4 and in a boss 29 on the film guide plate 5 and the gear pinion 25 is secured to the hub of said disk.
Projecting outwardly from the rim of said disk are two oppositely disposed operating pins or studs 26 which engage in slots 27 cut in the periphery of the flange 21 of the feed sprocket, said slots being approximately concentric with the aXis of the disk 23. The retaining surfaces 22" of the hub 22 of the sprocket engage the inner periphery of the rim of the disk 23 to lock the sprocket and film feed roller 13 against rotation or back lash until one of the pins 26 engages said sprocket to rotate the roller. At points adjacent the pins 26 the rim of the disk 23 is cut away to provide clearance for the points of the alining hub 22 during the rotation of the sprocket.
This mechanism is very positive in its operation and by reason of'the disposition of the feed roller shaft within the periphery of the operating disk, it provides a very compact structure.
Having described my invention, I claim A device of the nature disclosed comprising a cupped driving disk having a peripheral flange provided with a notched inner periphery, an actuating projection extending from the disk flange adjacent the notch therein, a member to be intermittently rotated by said disk, pivoted within the periphery thereof and comprising a hub portion having segmental engaging surfaces This sprocket cooperates with a conadapted to engage the inner flange 'periphmy name, as attested by the tWo subscribing eryfi 11nd a sprocket portion overlapping the Witnesses. dis ange and provided with a plurality of I slots each approximately concentric with the p JOHN TELLS 5 cupped disk when in operative alineinent Witnesses: With the actuating projection. CLARENCE B. FOSTER,
In witnesswhereof, I hereunto subscribe L. A. BECK.
