APPARATUS FOR LIFTING AND EMPTYING PAILS AND CANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1920.
Application filed August 7, 1917. Serial No. 184,931.
To all @0.7mm t may concern:
lie it known that we, CARL BRUUN STRY- inn: and Sren NIELSEN, residing `at Ros- .lrilde, and CARL ELMEE, residing at Naurbjerg Mej eri, Denmark, subjects of the King of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Apparatus for Lifting and Emptying Fails and Cans; and we doliereby declare the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention.
Gui' invention refers to a continuously ac ting apl'iaratus for lifting and emptying pails and cans, especially milk-cans.
(lne form of construction is shown in the drawing in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, front View, side view, and plan, respectively.
On a bed plate 4i there are disposed, firstly, a strap-shaped standard the upper part of which is bent outward from the bed plate, serving as al rest for the upper part of the can or pail during the process of lifting and emptying, and, secondly, a standard 6, U- shaped in section, which serves to carry the transmission (eountershaft) and to guide the lifting apparatus. The transmission consists of a pulley 7, a therewith connected worm 8, and a worm-wheel 9 disposed on the same shaft as the sprocket-wheel 10. A chain 12 runs over this latter and another', preferably adjustable, sprocketnvheel 11 disposed vertically below said sprocket-wheel 10. The lifting apparatus consists, firstly, of a carriage 13 with guide-rollers 1li on the outside of the standard 6, and, secondly, of a supporting-plate 15, which is turnably suspended at an intermediate point in unstable equilibrium on an axle-pin 16 en the sideof the carriage 13 and has bent arms 17 with rollers 18 as support for the lower part of the can or pail. Between. a pin 19, on one of the links 12 for the chain, and a pin 20, on, the carriage 13, there is disposed a. suitable transmission-member, which insures a certain free-run, for instance, a pliant tractionmember or, as shown, a connecting-rod 21 with a slit 22 in which runs one of these pins, for instance, the pin 20.
When the supporting-plate l is in its lowermost position, it fits into a cavity, or recess, in the bed plate Il, so that its upper edge is flush with the upper edge of the bed plate. The chain transmission is disposed in the hollow part of the standard G.
As the chain -tra-nsmission is driven around in the direction of the arrow 24, and the pin 19 alternately goes u and down, the carriage 13 with the supporting-plate 15 will also alternately go up 'and down, but in such a manner that, owing to the slit 22, it will each time, for a` short period, find itself at rest im the lowermost position, namely, as long as the comiecting-rod 2l tf kes to pass from the left position (indicated by dashes and dots in Fig. 1) to the right position symmetrical with the left. This extended pause occurs only when the carriage is at the lower limit of its movement, as it is suspendn ed at the upper limit of its movement, and the link does not move vertically inclepend ently of the carriage at suoli upper limit of the movement of thcl latter. At the lower limit of the movement of the carriage the link has a, limited independent vertical movement, owing to the slot 22. During this period of time, the operator removes the empty pail or can from the supporting plate and places a lilled pail or can on it, so that itabuts against the bent arms 17. In this position the can and the supporting plate will have an overbalanee to the left in Fig. 3 and will therefore, during its movement upward, tip toward this side, and the top part of the can will repose against and be guided by the standard 5. When the can approaches the emptying position (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3), it will also be supported by the rollers 18 on the bent arms 17.
We claim:
An apparatus for lifting and emptying receptacles including a carriage, mechanism for elevating and lowering the carriage, a tiltable platform pivoted at an intermediate point to the carriage in unstable equilibrium to effect an automatic tilting of a recep taole, and means cooperating with the platform for support-ing the receptacle in emptying position.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention, we have signed our names.
CARL BRUUN STRYBERG. sREN NIELsEN. CARL ELMER.
