Lllo all whom 1:25am concern:
lie it known that i I, Gunners WAIN- WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county ofErie and have invented new and useful Improvements in Box Plate Valves, of which the following is a specifl' cation;
This inventionrelates to box platevalves especially adapted to be used upon air com.- pressors and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
an object of the invention isto provide a valve having a form of a box and provided with an inlet port and several outletdports, there being leaves mounted upon the box and adapted to normally close the outlet port thereof. The combined areas of the outlet ports are equal to or in excess of the area of the inlet portbut under no C-l161l111- stances are the combined areas of the outlet ports less than the area'oitthe inlet port. It is not essential that the combined areas of the outlet ports remain at a fixed proportion or area with relation to the inlet port for by using box bodies in which the said areas of the ports differ a more elastic box valve structure is had in view of the factthat by varying the relative areas the rate of speed at which the air will travel through the box valve may be varied and COllSGClllBIltlYVflllanee may be had in the operation of the spring leaves whiclrclose over the outlet port.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a fragmentarysectional view oi: an air compressor showing one form of the box valve applied.

elevation ot the said Fig. 1.6 is a transverse sectional view of the valve shown in Fig. 15.
Fig. 17 is a side elevation of the valve as shown in Fig. 16.
Fig. 18 is a plan view of the leaf as employed upon the valve as shown in Figs. 16 and 17.
Fig-19 is a side elevation of another form. of the box valve with parts in section.
In the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 1 to oinclusive the box valve com'- prises a body 1 which is approximately octagonal in plan and which is provided with concaved sides This box is adapted to rest over one of the ports of the air compressor as best shown in Fig. 1 oi the drawing and a plate 3 bears against one end of the box and is held in position by means of a screw lwhich passes through a plate 5 located at the end of the compressor. The
body o'fthe box 1 is provided with a cen- Y trally positioned cone shaped portion 6 which is connected with the sides of the said body by means of webs or walls 7. These walls join with the sides of the body 1 at the intermediate portion of the concaved I sides 2 thereof best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The body 1 is provided between the webs or walls 7 with inlet por S and the sides 2 are provided with outlet ports 9 also locatedbetween the webs or walls 7.
The combined areas of the outlet ports 9 between two adjacent wel s or walls 7 are equal to or greater than the transverse area of the inlet port 8 lo ated between the same illus- Webs or Walls 7. That is to say, in any event, the combined areas of the outlet port between the same walls or webs is not less than the transverse area of the inlet port which is located between the same walls or webs. Spring leaves 10 are secured at points approximately midway between their ends to the ends of the webs or walls 7 and normally lie against the concaved surfaces 2 of the sides of the box body and close the ort 9. Consequently the said leaves 10 are sexed or bowed in arcuate shape but their free ends are adapted to move whereby they may uncover the ports 9. Y
It is to be understood that in the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, all of the box bodies 1 which may be employed in the air compressor have inlet ports of the same transverse area. However one box body 1 may be removed from the compressor and another substituted in its stead in which a greater or less number of outlet ports 9 are employed but in all instances the combined areas of the outlet ports 9 are greater than the transverse area of the corresponding inlet port 8. This provision is made in order that the passage of the air through the box valve may be regulated to operate upon the spring leaves which control the outlet port to regulate the movement of the said leaves. That is to say the leaves may be caused to move for considerable distances to uncover the outlet port or the said leaves may have but slight movement to uncover the said ports to permit the passage of the volume of air through the box valve body. The cone shaped portion isv so disposed with relation to the sprin leaves that the pressure of the air is distributed along the said leaves in order that they may all approximately move to the same extent with relation to the box body when they uncover the outlet port.
In the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive the body 11 is inserted through the side of the air compressor and held therein by suitable means such as for instance shown in Fig. 6, and the said body is provided with a cone shaped portion 12. A cylinder 13 is mounted upon the body 11 and surrounds the cone shaped portion 12 and the space between one end of the cylinder 13 and the smaller end of the cone shaped portion 12 constitutes the inlet port of the valve, the said port being indicated at 14. The cylinder 13 is provided at its sides with a number of inlet ports 15 and the combined areas of all of the inlet ports 15 is equal to and may be greater than the transverse area of the inlet port 14.
' or the said leaves are cated in Figs. 7 and 10 and their free end portions nor-mall close the port 15. la this instance the air is drawn through the ports 15 whereby the free ends of the leaves: 16 are moved away from the said ports and the cone shaped portion 12 regulates the passage of the air through the cylinder 1? so that the free ends of the leaves 16 move approximately the same distance away from the ports 15 and the air is permitted to pass from the cylinder 13 through the port ll. Thus the cone shaped portion 12 distributes-s the pressure along the leaves 16 whereby all practically moved to the same extent when air is passing through the box valve. By varying the number of ports 15 their combined areas may be increased but in no event is the combined areas of the ports 15 less than the transverse area of the port 14.
I11 the form of the invention as shown in Figs. 11 to 14 inclusive, the box body 17 is positioned in the compressor and held therein by suitable means for instance that shown in Fig. 11 and the said body 17 is provided with an interiorly located cone shaped portion 18. 17 is rectangular in plan said body end with a port 19 and ports 20. The combined 20 are equal to or greater the port 19 and the said ports 20 are normally closed by duplicate leaf spring members 21 which are secured at their ends to the body 17. The cone shaped portion 18 efiects the distribution of the pressure of the air which passes through the body 17 in a manner similar to that described in connection with the other forms of the invention set forth. In the form of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 15 to 1 inclusive the box body 22 the compressor in a suitable manner as for instance as shown in Fig. 15 and the said 22 is provided with inlet ports 23. The b0. y 22 is further provided with outlet ports 24 which are normally closed by means of resilient leaves 25 which are secured at one end to the body 22.' In this form of the invention the combined areas of all of the ports 24 are equal to or greater than the combined areas of all of the ports 23, but as hereinbefore explained the relative areas is provided at one at its sides with areas of the ports than the area of apparent from the foregoing that my improvement is free of stops behind the plates or leaves,'ivhich stops are highly objectionable; also, that the improve ment comprises a maximum number of ports and valves as is desirable, and that the valves are light in Weight and sensitive, and hence quick to respond.
By reason of the construction of my novel plate valve great flexibility is attained as is essential to successful operation, and the total net area of the ports controlled by the flexible plates may be made greater than the area of the induction port. Again maximum efficiency is attained by the employment of one flexible plate to one port.
Having described the invention What is claimed is 1- In a plate valve, the combination of a cage with an induction port at one end and a plurality ol exterior valve seats an ports extending therefrom to the interior of the cage, and a series of flexible plates surrounding the cage and each connected thereto and arranged opposite the ports, the total net area of the said ports exceeding the area of the induction port.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES WAINWRIGHT.
