Abstract

432,382. Vehicle spring-suspensions. MORRIS, J. N., 63B, Islington Row, Birming- ham. May 10, 1934, No. 14126. [Class 108 (ii)] In an arrangement for preventing canting of a motor-vehicle body, e.g. in negotiating curves, one or more pairs of wheels a are suspended by means of torsion rods d having fluid-controlled anchorages, the flow of fluid to and from such anchorages being regulated by centrifugally actuated operating means. As shown, each anchorage comprises a cylindrical casing or stator f, Figs. 1 and 3, having a series of fixed internal vanes g alternating with a corresponding series of vanes h on a rotor e to which the ends of the torsion rods d are secured. One set of compartments thus formed communicates by parts 15 with an annular chamber 13, Fig. 2, and the other set by ports 16 with a concentric chamber 14, pipes y, z, leading from these chambers to a valve casing x, Fig. 4, in which is arranged a slide valve 7 adapted normally to obstruct the pipes y, z, and allow a flow only by inlet and outlet pipes w. These pipes w are arranged in a fluid circuit comprising a sump u, suction pipe v, pump t, pipes wand valve casing x. When the valve 7 is displaced by pressure exerted upon an operating piston 12, flow is permitted through the casing f and pipes y, z, in the appropriate direction, one pipe serving as a flow and the other as a return pipe to the valve casing x. To control the position of the piston 12 an auxiliary fluid circuit is provided comprising the sump u, suction pipe 4, pump 3, supply pipe 5, and valve casing 6, the regulating valve 6 being associated with two pipes admitting fluid to the upper or lower sides of the piston 12. Actuation of the valve 6 is effected by means of a weight q slidingly mounted on a rod r under the control of centralizing springs s and provided with an upstanding pin p which in turn actuates a lever n and valve lever o. One end of the lever n is attached at m to one of two transverse levers k, l, that interconnect plates i mounted on the rotor members e on opposite sides of the vehicle. The effect of this arrangement is that after a certain quantity of fluid, owing to the displacement of the weight q, has been admitted to the anchorages f, the levers l, n restore the valve o to its normal position and prevent admission of further fluid to the anchorages ; also, as soon as weight q returns to its normal position, a flow of fluid in the opposite direction is induced in the anchorages, and both the rotors e and levers k, l, n are again centralized.
