To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corvallis, in the county of Ravalli and State of Montana, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Desks and Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in a desk and chair and has for one of its 0bj ects the provision of a device of this character, having a pedestal for supporting the desk and chair.

7 Another object of this invention isthe provision of means whereby the desk may be rotatably and adjustably mounted on the pedestal whereby the angle and the'lieight of the desk may be varied as desired.

A further object of this invention is the provision of means for rotatably and adjustably su porting the chair to the pedestal, wherdby the angle and height of the chair with relation to'the floor may be varied when desired and also will permit the chair to be folded under the desk in a substantially vertical position.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of a desk and chair of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating means for adjusting the desk and chair upon the pedestal,

Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, illustrating the means for holding the various parts in adjusted posilon.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety, a pedestal consisting of a base 2, which is folded or otherwise secured to the flooring asshown The pedestal 1 has a cylindrical ortion 4, which is internally and external y screwthreaded as illustrated in Fig. 3. A sup- V porting rod 5 of cylindrical formation has its lower end externally threaded and threaded into the cylindrical portion 4 of the pedestal and has its upper end apertured to recerve'a set screw 6 for holding a cylin- (11193.1 collar 7 therein at various adjusted posltions. A plate 8 is formed upon the upper end of the collar 7 and is secured to the bottom of a desk 9. The plate 8 is provided with an annular groove 10 about the collar 7 to receive the up er end of the 'cy-' lindrical supporting mem er 5.

A housing 11 is internally screwthreaded at its lower end and threaded upon the cylindrical portion 4 of the pedestal 1 and has its upper end apertured to receive a set screw 12 for holding the cylindrical supporting member 5 in various adjusted positions in the pedestal 1. p

The housing 11 is rovided with an annular groove 13, whic is surrounded by a collar 14 having an inwardly directed flange 15, which is received within the groove 13 for rotatably supporting the collar 14 upon the housing 11. The collar 14 has formed thereon, oppositely disposed arms 16, which have their outer ends bent in substantially U-shaped formation as shown at 17 A pair of relatively spaced arms 18 are pivoted to the free ends of the substantially U-shaped portion 17 as shown at 19 and have their inner ends normally in engagement with the under faces of the arms 16 for supporting them in a substantially horizontal position. The arms 18 have secured thereon, a seat 20. A set screw 21 is carried by the collar 14 and is adapted to bethreaded in engagement with the housing 11 to prevent the rotation of the arms 16 about a vertical axis. v

A pair of substantially L-shaped members 22 are connected by transverse members 23'and bracing strips 24. The bracing strips 24 are also connected to horizontal braces 25, which are in turn connected to the vertical arm portions of the substantially shaped members 22. A back rest 26 is se cured to the vertical arm portions of the substantially Ushaped members 22 for cooperating with the seat chair. The back rest 26 extends upwardly and closes the front wall to the desk 9. The desk 9 consists of a top 27 and side walls 28, which are secured to the sides of the substantially L-shaped members 22 and to the horizontal l races 25. The desk 9. has its rear wall open so that articles may be placed within the desk upon the bottom thereof when desired. i I

In operation, when it-is desiredto adjust the height of thedesk 9 with respect to the floor, the collar 7 may be adjusted within the cylindrical supporting member 5 by releasing the set screw 6. The desk may he further adjusted in height from the floor by rotating the cylindrical member 5 within the cylindrical portion 4 of the pedestal l by. releasing the set screw712. The desk 9 also may be adjusted at various angles with relation to the base'by releasing the set screw 12.

The seat 20 may be readily folded up in engagement with the back rest when desired by swinging the arms 18 upon their pivots 19. When it is desired to remove the seat 20 from in front of the back rest 26, the set screw 21 may be released from engagement with the housing 11, permitting the collar 14 to rotate thereon, swinging the seat under 20 in forming a the desk as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. 2' I Vhile 'Ihave shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
